Beating Paintergrind

Legacy forum

I need to make a deck to beat a painter grind deck. The main combo is Grindstone and Painter's Servant. He consistently gets it turn 3. He also runs Spellskites, Swords to Plowshares, Holy Day, Isochron Scepter, and stuff like Blue Elemental Blast. Tons of red hate, which he takes care of using Painter's Servant. I don't mind netdecking for this guy, but I'd like to keep it cheap. Please help me out.

Run any of the legendary Eldrazi whatsoever in your deck and the mill just won't work. Force of Will and other fast, cheap counterspells are probably also a good idea.

Pithing Needle solves everyones problems, seriously. Just name Grindstone and watch him squirm.

Of course, the Eldrazi will just draw it up. Hm. You basically just need to get rid of Painter's Servant. I'd just run a lot of Force Spike and Counterspell and maybe something to get it out of his deck completely, like Extirpate. Any of the standard stuff you'd use against a combo deck.

Steel Sabotage is a cheap common that can ruin that combo, and most of his other annoying cards, like Isochron Scepter and Spellskite.

@KrazyCaley: The Eldrazi won't cause a tie. You'll dump your library, the trigger will finally be allowed to go onto the stack, then you'll put your graveyard back in the library. It's replacement effects like Progenitus that will cause a draw.

I know they cost 3, so you're putting yourself in the danger zone, but Krosan Grip or Sudden Death will stop the combo cold (unless he goes so far as to run Chill alongside Servant, in which case you're just screwed).

Alright, I'm thinking mono blue. suggested win cons?

@Rhadamanthus - You're right. For some reason I didn't consider that Grindstones ability would have to finish resolving first.

I decided on a blue/white control with red hate and artifact hate side boarded. Pithing Needle does work. and Surgical Extraction for the phyrexian mana

The Surgical Extraction requires it servant in question being in graveyard first, what are you running as your counter-suite?

counter-suite? I take it out with steel sabotage. Laboratory maniac is always in there for safety.

Good luck without Force of Will and Daze

fow is 80 bucks and force spike is every bit as good as daze for cheaper. I think I'll be fine.

Except with Daze you can represent having it while being tapped out, so no, it's not.

In a deck with over half one drops, 15 of those being instants, if I'm tapped out it's because I just finished controlling their entire turn.

Disrupting Shoal with the right 1-3 focus on your curve can pretend it's FoW.

Progenitus or Darksteel Colossus would basically glitch out the game like Worldgorger Dragon + Animate Dead does in vintage, ending in a draw. Except its worse as no player even gets priority to have any chance to stop it after Grindstone begins to resolve.

Although a key point is you'd two copies for a sure repeat. Otherwise, you get down to just the colossus in the deck and it stops repeating (the other nonexistant card doesn't share a color with your repeater).
