Boros Stoneblade?

Legacy forum

So, my friend wants to make boris stone blade. Adding blue is too expensive and black might be added. Anyway, he is using Steelshaper's Gift until he can get the SFMs. He has Batterskull and Umezawa's Jitte. He is including a play-set of Lightning Bolts and Swords to Plowshares. He also will obtain Sword of Fire and Ice. But I need suggestions for more blade-bearers. He will use 1-2x Brimaz, King of Oreskos but other than that we can't think of anything. Thanks in advance.

P.S.

SB isn't a concern as of now.

I'm not sure how this deck will fare. Legacy's best blade bearer is True-Name Nemesis. But really any hexproof creature will work.

I don't want to say he'll get run over, but tbh, he might get run over if he's trying to play competitively. Blue is the integral color that makes stoneblade really work, with counters such as Force, cantrips, and beaters like the aforementioned True-Name Nemesis. Also, Steelshaper's Gift is hardly a replacement for the mystic. Stoneforge is so powerful because it can cheat in equipment for a much lower cost, and it's uncounterable; Gift does none of that unfortunately. Idk, maybe I'm just cynical, but the tried and true stoneblade shell is the real deal as is, and it's hard to mess with it that much. Good luck!

maybe have your friend use these cards to build a modern version as without stone forge the deck is too fair and without blue the deck lacks the best weapons to disrupt the unfair decks for an equipment strategy to work long enough.

but if he insists Mirran Crusader would probably be your best bet for a weapon carrier.

Oh lord why even play Batterskull without Stoneforge? Casting it for 5 is usually terrible, and without blue counters he should just be dead by then.

Sounds like someone who doesn't understand legacy at all.

Ok thx for the input Demarge. So he could sell the jitte then it could work and path instead of swords. But still w/e. thx.

Well if he doesn't wanna go blue, he might as well just cut the red and go the Death and Taxes route. Fairly cheap except the Wastelands, with Blade usually wants anyways, and Rishadan Ports and Karakas. But for the latter he can hope and pray that Reanimator and Sneak and Show aren't common where he's playing.

Bolt is a solid card, but questionable if it warrants a splash just for it. And other than that, there aren't many legacy-friendly cards if you aren't just going straight up burn.

Legacy isn't really a format that is conducive to replacing cards that have a specific niche with cards that sort of do the same thing (i.e. Stoneforge Mystic and Steelshaper's Gift). The likelihood of getting blown out greatly increases with "substitutions." I recommend using cards that do precisely what you want them to do in a fully functioning deck and building the deck he/she really wants to play on the side in the meantime. If your friend has budget restrictions and really wants to play right now, something like Manaless Dredge or Oops! All Spells at least have a punchers chance in the format and will allow him/her to not get auto-dumpstered by fully functioning decks thus providing more enjoyability in the format.

I'd suggest having your friend keep the cards he has built up still, he can have the final goal be the legacy stoneblade deck he wants to build, but having a modern version he'll have a better win rate than if he sent a SFM less stoneblade deck into legacy.

Yeah, as others have said, Legacy Stoneblade without SFM just doesn't really work. Your friend should do either one of 2 things. If he's dead set on playing Legacy, then build a cheaper deck and start getting to know the format. If he just wants to play, then start building something in Modern that uses similar cards. You can build a U/W deck with Snappy, B-Skull, etc, and slowly build up to a Legacy version. Either way, if he wants to attempt to play Legacy on a budget, he'll have to be very patient. Legacy decks just don't build themselves overnight, unless you're willing to drop a couple G's.
