Death and Taxes Budget Budget

Legacy forum

I think I wanna play Death and Taxes for Legacy. Wanan start on a budget then let it grow. So by budget I mean no Batterskull, Stoneforge, or lands like crazy dual lands. Ill go for shocks and fetches. Pain or buddy lands etc. So tell me where to start what I need to get.

Ok, maybe start by understanding the D&T is a MONO COLORED deck. One, ichi, uno, just white, nothing else, Ariel-style (the washing up powder thing, not the mermaid).

Then, if you do not have the budget for even stoneforge and batterskull, I doubt you will be able to play anything resembling D&T.

Next define your max budget. My D&T is about 1500 mid TCG and that is about the price you can expect for the deck.

Now the questions how low do you go?

Then you don't have the deck.

I say this every time. Don't take a good deck and make it bad by not putting the stuff that makes it work in. Start with something else and build up slowly to the good deck.

For example, I started with Affinity. It had ancient tombs, mox opals, and artifact lands. From there, I slowly built up to MUD. Now I had city of traitors, mox opals, ancient tombs, artifact lands, wastelands. Now, I have a few options. I can go UR Painter. I can go Welder MUD. I can go Sneak and Show. I can go Jeskai Stoneblade. I can go Jeskai Delver.

Yea, we're not trying to rain on your parade, but D&T without Rishadan Port, Wasteland and Karakas isn't D&T. You can get some of the other mainstays like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Mother of Runes for cheap but the lands that make the deck go aren't cheap. You may as well play any multicolor deck(minus BUG delver) bc the lands in most legacy decks will be pricey. I tried doing D&T and ended up going the Abzan Maverick route because it was about the same price wise but more spread out among the pieces

Hey i believe you could build a non top tier D&T by you skip the Rishadan Ports, the Wastelands and the Karakases. But you must have the AEther Vial, and the Stoneforge Mystic package (at least Batterskull and Umezawa's Jitte)

Will this be top tier? Definitely no. Will this be competitive? Emmm perhaps a bit, some games you will win, and some games will loose just for not having the whole manay denial package (believe me, its just that great). But it will be:-fun-will let you star grasping what means to play D&T-will be a """solid""" base to start building the deck, since you could start adding the wastes, rishidans and karakases one card at a time

Cards you could try:

Ghost Quarter (some decks dont even play basics!)

Leonin Arbiter (the reason you play ghost quarter)

Dust Bowl (useful to keep the op away from the 4 mana he needs to board swipe)

Flagstones of Trokair (synergy with the bowls)

My 2 cents, hope it helps

Heyo! People already said what I was going to say. So.

Tl;dr

D&T is mono white. If you are removing all the cards that make it good, it's time to try to build something else.... Like Belcher.

Yea, even in the most "taxing" builds though, Ghost Quarter operates as Wasteland 5-6. Dust Bowl is too expensive(essentially costing 4 mana to use). The painful truth is that most non-infect/burn decks are going to be pricey in legacy, and even then some of the infect decks start to creep up in price. G/W hatebears is probably the closest thing to budget D&T out there.

It's a rich man's game but with that building a legacy deck is SUPER satisfying and you feel accomplished when finally get there. At least I did. You can find some rogue decks every now and then, but don't expect them to let you spike somewhere beyond FNM/casual store tournaments.

If you want budget legacy, you play burn or some storm variant. Those are the only choices you have if you want to win games. That being said, there's tons of ways to customize your deck to suit you. You could go with the classic Spanish Inquisition style mono black storm, you could play belcher, you could play sac land tendrils, you can go mono red storm.

Or you can net level everyone and rogue brew. But do not try to make a top tier deck without understanding either what the deck is or how to properly make a budget deck.

If you want budget, there are some very cheap (eternal standards) Sac land Tendrils lists out there. D&T is not horribly expensive by legacy standards. (it's basically average-to lower end)

Here is how to actually build D&T on a budget:

Karakas - buy italian ones off facebook, these can be found for $80-90 vs english which are $110+. Savings ~$75

Wastelands - buy MP/HP off FB, you can be picked up for $40-50. Saving ~$40

Ports - buy HP/MP, I don't deal with ports enough to know but shop around for tcg low - 10%

Stoneforge - MP for $28 right now on tcg, about what NM/SP sell for $$ wise

The rest - isnt even really expensive, batterskull is not a card you cut on a budget, if you can't afford one, you prolly cant afford a playset of lightning bolt for burn anyway.

DO NOT PAY TCG MID PRICES!!!!!!!!Always shop around, tcg mid is a stupid meaningless price, esp when buying cards. Pay tcg low or less. Use other outlets such as craigslist, facebook, or maybe even tapped out if buying cards and also to expand the people you can trade with.

D&T without Wasteland and Rishadan Port is just begging to get steamrolled. You really need those lands to beat up combo and keep control locked out of the game. Ghost Quarter doesn't do shit to stop decks like Show and Tell or U/W Miracles that already play basics.

You also need Horizon Canopy for the card draw later in the game and additional sideboard tech.

I'm pretty much repeating what others have already said, but I think it's worth hammering home before you drop $500+ on a deck that doesn't work. If you're operating on a budget, U/R Delver (you'll still need Force of Will, but it's cheaper than Rishadan Ports and Wastelands), Burn, and Dredge are probably better choices.

Eh I like legacy but I think ill stick to watching it for now lol. I Play EDH and Modern at the moment. I will brew a deck on here and keep it as a goal then. Thank you everyone for your honest answers. Also not sure why I but I thought D&T was W/B I think the name confused me.

you play 4 stoneforge mystics bc you want to tutor up jitte and batterskull, you want to cheat a batterskull in as early as possible, and against decks like elves jitte can shut them down, almost like running 5 copies of each equipment. also as a resource denial deck, SFM is often hit with removal, leaving a batterskull in hand, you cant cast bc youve been wastelanding and now you want to keep using ports, so you need a 2nd sfm to stick it
