Initial thoughts after GP New Jersey
Legacy forum

UR Delver didnt seem as dominant as expected and while the deck that won had treasure cruise, it was only in 3 of the top 8 decks, one of which played only a single copy. I am curious to what everyone's initial thoughts are on the format moving forward. To me, legacy still seems very healthy. While there was a shift in the meta, I don't feel as if treasure cruise is oppressive.

U/R Delver and Treasure Cruise were absolutely everywhere at this tourney. They problem with U/R Delver is that it's easy to hate against. Drawing 3 cards for 1 seems great in theory, but when all you get out of the deal are cantrips and Monastery Swiftspear, you're setting yourself up to get overpowered.

Lets not forget that it's also one of the cheapest decks in the format with or without duals, so there was a lot of availability among players. Gave the people hating on it a better shot, at least.

DAMMIT! Alch, one of those u/w/r decks. Somebody was doing well with miracles anyhow! Also, infect is a thing in legacy? I know that it is there, but not a, "thing".

Infect is an okay deck. Tom Ross is also one of the best players in the world and that's HIS deck.

Rhere were too many people trying to hate out Delver, using decks that preyed on it like Landstill or MUD, and tech like Sudden Shock so I'm not surprised it didn't do well. Also, i really liked the Food Chain deck run by Jonathon Job.

But the format seems super diverse, all one ofs in the top 8 other than Miracles. Very surprised by Landstill and MUD, and I expected at least one Show and Tell deck.

I don't know that it is so much a case of Infect being a "thing" so much as it is a case of Tom Ross being really quite good at Magic. The Boss is just on one heck of a hot run and he pilots that deck exceptionally well. The deck itself is a rather small part of the metagame and doesn't show a ton of great results in general.

It puts up results frequently.
It's just all Tom Ross.

tman007 i believe there was a sneak and show deck in the top 16. And infect is a deck which is good but very different from its modern counterpart, and Tom Ross is without a doubt the best infect player ever. The grixis control deck looked interesting and I'm glad that combo still had a good enough showing.

The issue that I think comes up is that Treasure Cruise U/R delver lists have gotten away from what makes the delver list sooo good, which is land a turn 1/2 threat and then just attrition you to death with Stifle and Daze and Wasteland and Force of Will, and keep you out of the game until their threat ends your life. They've moved now towards burn and tempo, and I think it's less strong, it doesn't lock people up as tightly anymore.

Kind of upsetting to not see any Shardless BUG or Jund decks in the top 18. I'll just assume it's from Treasure Cruise hype, but I do hope the decks don't fizzle out. Not that I ever really expect them to.

Shardless BUG is a bad deck. Why set up for Ancestral Vision when you can get it for free with Treasure Cruise. Jund has never been that strong but how can it win games trading 1 for 1 when everyone is playing Treasure Cruise
November 18, 2014 3:29 a.m.
Shardless is probably gone and never coming back unless cruise got banned which is pretty unlikely.

Don't kick a man while he's down. I know Jund isn't a powerhouse in legacy like it is (or I suppose, was) in modern, but sometimes I like to root for a deck that doesn't have blue in it. Brainstorming for years and just countering anything you play until you can resolve a Jace has to lose it's appeal at some point. Sometimes I feel wizards is too afraid to let any other color but blue be the strongest and this is coming from somebody that pretty much plays nothing but blue decks.

I think wizards inderestimated the power of treasure cruise in legacy( not that it's OP) And didn't they admit that true-name was a bad call? They have been slowly trying to add non-blue payables like Thalia and containment priest but I think it's hard to gauge power on them and they haven't been as strong as hoped

I chose to build Legacy UR Delver to take to GP Jersey simply because it was really easy for me to put together. I ended up going 5-4 (I stayed in after getting knocked out of Day 2 contention just to get some more practice) and I had a pretty fun time overall. I had 2 losses to Jeskai Stoneblade, 1 to Reanimator, and 1 to Miracles. I won against Tendrils, Sultai Delver, U/R Delver ..... and 2 no-show opponents. =/
A couple weeks before the start of the event, I started to get concerned about how many people would be ready for the deck to show up in force, and it turned out that plenty of them were. The deck is still good, but it's not in a state where it's just going to run all over everybody all the time.

This is the one where miracle won with brian braun? It seemed normal. Miracles winning with the Treasure Cruise, cruisin' along. I agree that treasure cruise is not too oppressive. I initially thought that it would see more play...
