Can't be countered, protection from , Haste... I'm thinking a sideboard slot could be worthy of this guy in 12 Post. Thoughts? Discuss!

If you're just looking for a giant fireball effect, Banefire would do the same thing without sometimes randomly dying to Swords to Plowshares , Abrupt Decay , etc.

Good points.

Is the Hydra's CMC 2 after it's cast, or is the X figured into it?

Oops, 1.

On the stack it's CMC is whatever X is plus 1. On the battlefield it's just 1.

Hmm... Interesting.

The cmc is always one, it doesn't change on the stack.

@magicnerd0815 The CMC of a spell on the stack includes the x. So Mistcutter Hydra has a CMC of 1 + x while it is on the stack. In all other zones its CMC is 1.

202.3. The converted mana cost of an object is a number equal to the total amount of mana in its mana cost, regardless of color....

202.3b When calculating the converted mana cost of an object with X in its mana cost, X is treated as 0 while the object is not on the stack, and X is treated as the number chosen for it while the object is on the stack.

Now that it's settled, seems like Banefire would be good in 12 Post. I've seen older builds splash for it, in fact. I suppose if the meta was rife with Merfolk, Mistcutter Hydra would be beneficial. StP and Abrupt Decay are things.
