nether void and cavern of souls -Q & Legacy viable?

Legacy forum

You have in play both a Nether Void and a Cavern of Souls , which is set to "angels". Presumably you can then cast any angel creature cards (using mana from the Cavern of Souls without paying the (3) to the Nether Void . Correct?

Is this a viable strategy for legacy play?

What other sort of "uncounterable" affects can you add to allow you to work around your own Nether Void ?

And conversely what other control cards are there that function similar to the Nether Void that you could use to establish control (while getting around them with "uncounterable" cards)?

You're correct. Since Cavern of Souls 's mana makes creature spells of the chosen type uncounterable (assuming you used the mana from the second mana ability), Nether Void 's ability won't counter any of those spells.

I doubt it's Legacy viable.

Thanks Epochalyptik! I decided to do a little more digging and found a nice debate on the matter (for those following along at home who want to know more):

http://forums.mtgsalvation.com/showthread.php?t=428774

Summary of the debate: probably not viable to win big tournaments, but not to be dismissed totally. This idea was on my mind this morning. I have a Nether Void from the old days and was introduced to Cavern of Souls last night at my first Std tournament and am thinking about Legacy decks (despite never having played in one). With that said unless someone dies and leaves me a lot of money or I hit the lottery, I doubt I'd spend the dough to get 3x more Nether Void . An example of a deck in the above thread was a goblin themed deck.

But I do want to explore the idea some more (should I post this in the legacy section?)...

Are there other cards out there like Nether Void that counter spells if caster doesn't pay additional mana (as a strategy as mana denial)?

I did a quick search to find other cards that can't be countered that could get around the void:

Goblin deck with direct damage:Banefire card:Urza's RageVexing Shusher Boseiju, Who Shelters All Slaughter Games (you need the black anyway)

For blue:Counterflux Last Word -now you can counter anything that gets around the Nether Void

For Sliver decks:Root Sliver

additional possibilities:Loxodon Smiter Thrun, the Last Troll Volcanic Fallout Demonfire (with hellfire)Bound/Determined or Insist (with Boseiju, Who Shelters All you can now cast anything else you'd need to get out)Spellbreaker Behemoth Supreme Verdict Wreak Havoc

just FYI... now the question is whether this gets the wheels turning for anyone more knowledgeable than myself...

Note: If you had either Insist or Bound/Determined with Boseiju, Who Shelters All you could then drop a second Nether Void (all spells are countered if you don't pay (6), which you could still work around while your opponent could not.

If one were to run this deck, one would also want card:Mishra's Factory and other lands that can become creatures in it. Found a link here:

So.. whatcha think Epochalyptik? Still no good? Or sounding better?

I don't play Legacy, but I'm not convinced it's really viable. Zoo will beat you down too quickly, Fish/Fae will counter it, Stoneblade will counter it and play around it, and affinity will outrace it. If you can get it out early enough, you might stop storm and combo, but I doubt you'll manage that too often.

Since this is already half strategy, half rules, I could just move this entire thread to the Legacy forum unless Apoptosis would like to start a new one.

Epochalyptik & mafteechr Legacy Void v1 is a prototype "concept" deck using Nether Void + Cavern of Souls for your amusement. Please let me know what you think.

If I were going to make a legacy deck with Nether Void , I would try an esper landstill type deck for it. The problem with a deck that uses cavern to try and get around the void is that it is very susceptible to Wasteland . If they kill your cavern, you'll be stuck trying to get to 4+ mana just to cast a 1-drop. They will too but, they will probably have more powerful cards than you once they get there.

Very good point!

Sacred Ground , Crucible of Worlds , Life from the Loam ?

The prototype deck I put together has land, enchantment, and artifact tutoring, which could help set up protection against the dreaded Wasteland . I'll add them to the sideboard for now... please take a look!

Nether Void is an Enchant World....meaning only one Enchant World can be in play at once. So you cannot drop 2 on the field and have everything cost 6 extra mana.
