Two Headed Giant Strategy

Limited forum

Hello, As we near the prerelase and the release of the full set, many of us will be studying new cards and try to find a strategy we like or want to lean towards.

A lot of people will also be going to Two Headed Giant prereleases as WotC is really pushing the format during this set.

I just wanted to open up a discussion for anyone who has general tips on Two Headed Giant, general strategy or deck building, and any specific cards from BFZ and OGW that they would find particularly strong in this format.

I'll just get it out of the way here, Fall of the Titans is going to be THE GREATEST Two Headed Giant prerelease card if you can pull it.

Happy Brewing!

Subbing. I'll go home happy if I can simply play a couple good rounds, and obtain Ayli and Stoneforge equip. Looking forward to the 16th!

Two Headed giant sealed is probably my favorite format. I am really looking forward to the prerelease! I usually try to make a proactive deck and a reactive deck from the pool, and then pilot the reactive one so that I don't have to bother doing menial things like actually winning the game after we have controlled it.

Some pools just don't work that way, but it's usually the place I start from.

Goal of this limited format: open Needle Spires, then awaken something (possibly a Sheer Drop but I'll take Ondu Rising) onto it.

The dream is the Brood Monitor + Zulaport Cutthroat + Eldrazi Displacer combo though.

Tbh, I'd do it even if I didn't have the Cutthroat, just for the lols

Nickick too bad there isn't something in the set that makes activated abilities cheaper so you could net infinite scions lol

OP_Magikarp if only... Or some other really good ETB/LTB effects (although Zulaport's is good enough xD)

One piece of advice I got was have one of the two decks be very consistent (like CABS Theory consistent) and use the other for Control or Combo.

The few times I've played 2hg i had one deck go heavier on creatures and the other go heavier on removal/general spells. I'm not sure how that'll translate to this format but I'll probably stick to that General strategy.

There is one piece of advice that I think is very important - With more players contributing to the battlefield stalled boards happen more often and faster. Games will go long.

You want decks that can squeeze every possible bit of value from their cards as the game progresses. Slower, more expensive cards like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger become better in a format like this, because you are more likely to be able to cast them. Furthermore, card that can break a board stall (evasive creatures or creatures that can grant evasion a la Coralhelm Guide) or that can win you a game while the board is stalled (Drana's Emissary, Sphinx's Tutelage or going back to Theros my personal favorite Scholar of Athreos) become even more important than usual, to the point where you will often play cards that would more often than not be left in the sideboard a draft deck.

The flipside of this is - it's already not the best idea to build aggressive decks in most sealed formats (with team sealed as an exception) but that holds especially true for 2HG. You have to face twice as many blockers and one-and-a-half time the life total. The probability that you manage to win before the board gets stabilized is very little.
