A Question of Lore...

Would it be possible for a returned to carve a message, memory or other such thing into his/her mask? I mean it seems possible for one of them to inscribe instructions for them to follow, perhaps leading to clues of his past, or something other of the sort?

I asked this because I have a scene in my head where some hero dies protecting his wife and/or children, then escapes the underworld with instructions on his mask to go back and protect them. So in the end, we have a returned who knows he has to find and save a family, but does not know why.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

Why not. Seems interesting. I always love stories where the character has to discover who he is.

I know an old pc game where the hero is an undead guy who doesn't remember his past, and during the game he's in a quest for his memories and for his lost mortality. Check it out if you want, could give you good ideas for your story. It's the best RPG I've ever played! It's called PLANESCAPE: TORMENT.

That's interesting, aside from the fact that I don't think a returned could truly remember who he is, nor truly become "someone new", seeing as they can't retain long-term memories.

Also, I checked Planescape:Torment. It looks good, kind of like Dungeon Siege. I'll try and get it.

Sounds interesting. Though I agree, it would be as if the deceased left instructions for someone else (their Returned self) to finish unfinished business for them, and if said Returned heeds their previous plight, then so be it. This reminds me, I've also had my own ideas, I don't know if they should be separate or used together: 1. Half-mortal offspring of one of the Theran gods 2. A rogue character who kills Returned in order to collect their leftover masks to keep and/or sell. 3. All of the above = half-mortal son/daughter of Erebos/Athreos/Mogis w/ need for revenge on the Returned + profit.

Maybe it could be Erebos's son/daughter who kills returned, to send them back to his/her father, sort of as Erebos's mercenary type thingy.

Well a lot of demigods don't spend even a shred of their life knowing that they are god-born. That's kind of a problem. I was thinking the character could have come about by violent means via Mogis, so that if and when I made a deck, it could contain "Fists of the Demigod". (but I suppose there could be another explanation for the demigod being Red-Black) and he could have mortal desire for revenge against the Returned. (There does appear to be a few who aren't all that docile)
