So I don't know why this bugs me so much, but in the new card art for Ajani, Mentor of heros

He is only holding, his axe, not the normal double axe with his brothers darker axe attached to it.
Has there been a point when his axe broke?
Personally, I like the idea of Ajani being able to split them apart. The dual-bladed staff/axe thing is cool, but being able to switch between that and wielding two axes at the same time is cool. The art on this thing is gorgeous, too.

I don't understand the axe on its own in general. If you look at this picture (or other pictures, but cut the dual axe in half), I don't get how you're supposed to use the axe as a viable weapon. Thrusts and stabs? It's like a big spear with no pole on it...
As for the original post, as Epoch said, I'm willing to guess the thing on his back is the other axe, especially considering the ribbons on both

DobeNode: The way it's shaped, I believe the design is more on the hack-and-rip kind of motion (stab with sharp end and then pull), as the edge goes from crescent to being hook-like, as seen in Ajani, Caller of the Pride . I think what Wizards was trying to do with the Goldmane axes was to recreate some form of Spontoon Tomahawk, which has similar functions.

I think it broke in half in one of the alara books? Maybe wizards might release a page on the magic site about it. I still think its cool

If you look closely, both axes are still combined in Ajani's Presence .

FYI- to all asking about the axe in general it used to be two axed but he somehow attached his axe to his brothers because of the death of his brother. Also another reason why he is green and the symbology of the loss of rage of the murder is tied in with the axe

Yeah I didn't notice the one on his back, he must be able to take it apart and put it back together pretty easily.

It may be the thing slung over his shoulder.
