I have not yet read the War of the Spark novel, but I plan to do so, at some point, in the near future, as I currently am reading Nemesis, which is part of the Weatherlight saga that started with The Brother’s War (I should have read those books years ago, but it is better to do so late than never at all).
In reading the books, I have noticed a similarity between the Phryexian invasion of Dominaria and Bolas’s invasion of Ravnica: a powerful evil being was planning for centuries, or even millennia (which took many years and many sets in actuality to portray), to invade a plane that was regarded as a hub of activity for visitors from across the multiverse using a planar portal, posing a threat to the entire multiverse, and a group of courageous planeswalkers from numerous different planes united to fight against the menace.
Obviously, the two scenarios were not identical, but they certainly had more similarities than differences, although I suppose that that could be explained by saying that such a storytelling trope is nearly as old as storytelling itself, since M:tG is hardly the only story to employ it. Did anyone else notice the similarities between the invasions?
Well, the entire reason is encapsulated in "which took many years and many sets in actuality to portray" - they have to stretch it out so that the story fits the MTG sets release dates. Creating new stories is more taxing than developing old ones.

Yeah. The similarities are plentiful, but that's almost unavoidable given the route Wizards decided to take with the story-style.
