so after elspeth got Godsend from heilod and murdered xenegos. then heilod got his space sparkly panties in a bunch and was worried that elspeth (much like xenegos) would ascend to god-hood and overthrow him. so heliod decided to axe off elspeth in fear of her. as i can see you can tell in the new FTV wraith of god art so no more reprints of elspeth (she's getting the venser treatment)can any confirm this?

Where'd you find all this? Also, read the flavor text on Wrath of God.

Nooooooo!!! my favorite planeswalker! they can't do that.

May 23, 2014 6:59 p.m.

amishrambo says... #6

yep they did that now since ajani is primalrly a multi-colored PW now you'r only monowhite walker now is Gideon... crap

Osang says... #7

Wasn't there a less spoiler-y-titled thread about this a couple days back?

Anyway, to me it's better her than Ajani. Giving her a tragic story makes for a better plot and shows the vulnerability of Planeswalkers instead of glorifying them to a point where they're immortal. Plus, it adds into what future sets Ajani might get into: maybe join in the fight for Mirrodin in place of Elspeth, or something.

That said, I never want them to kill off Karn, because Karn.

yeaaaa prob should of checked the back-log for this kinda thread and shoulda made a spoiler free title

Bellock86 says... #9

Well that blows. I wasn't ever a huge elspeth fan but she was alright. I wish they'd quit killing shit.

Let's kill off Nicol Bolas and Karn while we're at it. Hell let's just wipe the multiverse of all current walkers and make all new ones and start from scratch.

End rant.

May 23, 2014 7:50 p.m.

Now they should ban her from all formats and drop all of her prices to next to nothing. Then bring her back and watch everyone flame.

May 23, 2014 8:01 p.m.

Evan Irwin is hilarious, btw.

I'd like to see Jace get the axe. Really.

I say that Ugin should make a comeback, as we've never seen an actual manifestation of him.

"He then too her to the mortal world and she died. But this is Theros and that isn't the end of the story.." Straight from R&Ds mouths regarding Elspeth.

Are we sure she's really dead? Noway to know until the story takes us there.

May 23, 2014 11:41 p.m.

Egann says... #13

Eh. Elspeth was always a bit of a Mary Sue, and most of us knew it was coming, but somehow I pictured her death as being something more heroic than Heliod getting jealous.

Couldn't she have had an epic last stand 300 style? Somehow I pictured her commanding an army when she died. Of course, I also pictured Captain Kirk dying on the bridge DOH, NOT THAT KIND OF BRIDGE! [/ Star Trek: Generations]

In any case, I doubt this is the last of her for one reason: Heliod is a white God and I don't think I would call shanking a rival a white-aligned move. It may not end with Elspeth returning, but I'm sure Ajani at least won't let it end here.

Insert crazy cat-lady joke here.

My guess is she is in the underworld, she comes back as a returned, and we are introduced to a bw elespeth with a golden mask, that now makes zombie tokens instead of soldier tokens!

May 24, 2014 12:09 a.m.

CorpusRa says... #15

that would actually be cool....Would team that with Necromancer... Zombie tokens galore!

Bellock86 they have to kill 'walkers sometimes or else the stories are boring. If no planeswalker ever died, the books would be boring -- we'd always know the outcome already.

aeonstoremyliver it's been hinted that Ugin's dead. (source)

May 24, 2014 4:16 a.m.

Bant4ever says... #17

I agree with you KrosanTusker. And if wizards never killed off a planeswalker every once in a while it would be to hard give a satisfying ending to all their stories. Oh and aeonstoremyliver they probably won't be killing Jace Beleren anytime soon as he along with Ajani Goldmane , Chandra Nalaar , Liliana Vess and Garruk Wildspeaker are the five main planeswalkers.

May 24, 2014 7:49 a.m.

The wizard believes wotc always bring walkers the wizard believes they will tie elspeth back into the story a few years from now just like they will with urza and ugdin

May 24, 2014 9:56 a.m.

amishrambo says... #19

Wizard of the Damned so dragon ball Z logic. if you kill a primary good guy you WILL bring them back to life in some form or fashion, in some cases even multiple times

May 24, 2014 9:59 a.m.

Bant4ever says... #20

The wizard is wrong Elspeth is dead and so is Urza. But the wizard might be right about Ugin but if he returns he will be a slave of Bolas.

May 24, 2014 10:20 a.m.

The dragon ball theory is what the wizard majored in at wizard school but was expelled for the wizard's radical ideas and sales made to fellow casters were too powerful for they were fools

May 24, 2014 12:37 p.m.

Bant4ever says... #22

Can the wizard please stop referring to him/herself in the third person?

May 24, 2014 8:13 p.m.

Magiclover318 says... #23

The wizard does what he pleases, if it pleases him to talk as such, I believe he will.

May 24, 2014 8:16 p.m.

A wizard is never late, he arrives precisely when he means to.

It has been hinted at that Nicol Bolas killed off Ugin, but to have another Dragon Planeswalker, perhaps even colorless, would be sweet.

May 24, 2014 11:38 p.m.

GrixisGuybru says... #25

If Ugin has not been killed by Bolas then this is probably the block he will return in seeing as later in the block Sarkhan will probably return dragons to Tarkir but if he returns he will be a slave of Bolas

May 25, 2014 6:16 a.m.

It seemed that in the Godsend novel when didn't see Elspeth die "on-screen" and a golden rule of fiction is that if you don't see it happen then there's nothing to say they can't come back.

Also in the Dragon's Maze novel wasn't Jace becoming the embodiment of the Guildpact supposed to lock him to the plane of Ravnica? Because in the Jace vs Vraska uncharted realms he can totally still planeswalk, which says to me that Wizards can totally be like "aaah, no. We're gonna retcon that crap, we aren't beholden to the novels"

All I'm saying is that Elspeth was a badass and deserved to go out way better than a lame Diabolus ex Machina and trading her life so her love interest could be brought back to life (Boooo) as a Returned no less. Like, got straight ripped-off, too.

May 25, 2014 2:56 p.m.

flyguy says... #27

All major scars walkers are dead... bet on Tezzeret.

Also, the only walkers to have died were on mirrodin or fought someone on mirrodin (stupid Xenagos). Mirrodin spreads death (Cue dramatic noise)

May 25, 2014 3:01 p.m.

@Egann btw, I don't follow how Elspeth is a mary sue?

like, she's nothing compared to Nicol and Urza

May 25, 2014 3:03 p.m.

@flyguy

Karn tho, also Koth's death not confirmed in the slightest. See above point, his "death" was super vague and it's kind of obvious that he's gonna turn up again.

May 25, 2014 3:16 p.m.

Bant4ever says... #30

BlastercoolWeird when Jace became the guild pact it did not say he was trapped on Ravnica it only said he was responsible for keeping the guilds in check. He is able to leave and if he wanted he could never return. It would just mean that the guilds would have nothing to stop them from going to war.

May 25, 2014 5:01 p.m.

flyguy says... #31

BlastercoolWeird- Yeah, I misspoke (mistyped). My second point is the only one I should have made.

May 25, 2014 6:02 p.m.

@Bant4ever oh he wasn't planeslocked? whoops. the point stands Wizards can absolutely be like "Nah Elspeth's coming back" and I would be super excited about. She and Ajani are my two favorite walkers.

I've heard a theory I really like that the mortals of Theros, discontent with the gods who nearly destroyed them for the misdeed of a single satyr, turn instead towards the heroics of Elspeth, who was unequivocally saved Theros. Perhaps this adoration would be enough for her to rise to godhood herself, taking Heliod's place as Deity of White Mana. Heliod's paranoia is based on Uranus' fear that his son would overthrow him, and then his son's fear that his offspring would overthrow him. In both cases that exact thing happened. It's what led to the war between Titans and Gods.

It is possible we will see Elspeth again but if she comes back I think it will be as a returned and will be bw

It's official Elspeth is dead. Read today's feature article of daily mtg

Here's the link. https://www.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/default.aspx

Kre says... #35

@ BlastercoolWeird: I meant mary sue as in generic fantasy fare. None of the planeswalkers are particularly amazing, but Elspeth has followed the monomyth practically beat for beat. That kinda annoys me.

That said, reading the last few paragraphs of that article implies some interesting things, namely that Erebos can't claim Elspeth's spirit if she dies in the temple. Normal rules of returning need not apply.

May 26, 2014 9:04 a.m.

GrixisGuybru says... #36

Yes the last paragraph is very interesting and almost guarantees that she will make a reappearance.

Elspeth was my favorite planeswalker so, now it brings joy to me when I exile Heliod, God of the Sun . I think it would be cool if she did return as a b/w planeswalker.

June 1, 2014 2:02 p.m.

Mac97 says... #41

That was cool for the ending.

June 1, 2014 6:03 p.m.

Meh...

I only have a problem if they kill Jace or Ajani. If they kill any of them, I riot. Just saying.

Also, this proves that even though Heliod may seem like he serves a noble cause, in the end, he really is just as greedy and paranoid as the rest of them. But he couldn't prove that Elspeth was going to ascend to godhood, and knowing Elspeth, I'm sure she wouldn't have, even if given the choice. So his fears were unjustified and unnecessary.

I see what your saying there Whacker_Slacker_2 I have to say I agree.

It'd be kinda cool to see Ob Nixilis, the Fallen have a come-back in some way to a playable planeswalker.

I saw some pictures and a video with a mask made out of Godsend for Elspeth. So i'm thinking this isn't completely over.
