what if like..we have return to theros where we have xenagos and elspeth forced to team up to fight there way out of the underworld..would this work?> when xenagos died did he cease to exist? what happened?

GoldGhost012 says... #2

Possibly. It depends on if Xenagos was taken to the Underworld, like other dead Therosians do when they die, or if he truly ceases to exist.

Wasn't Xenagos killed in Nyx? If they die in Nyx they die for good. That was the whole reason Ajani brought her down to the real world.

Guess hes dead then

Not quite, Ohthenoises. Xenagos's body fell from Nyx back into the mortal world; it's anyone's guess (except probably for Erebos, who may be the only one who know Xenagos's fate for good) whether he died in Nyx or on Theros. The fact that he may be in the Underworld with Eslpeth worries Heliod, as it should.

Hence the question. Thanks for the explanation.

Also, something interesting I found in the Uncharted Realms article Kruphix's Insight: the legend of the pantheon says that Heliod came into being, then his shadow appeared and he cast it out in fright. But the article says that death was the next thing to appear after Kruphix, which would make Erebos the second-oldest God, and thus, the legend a lie and propaganda.

Does it seem strange to think that Elspeth can planeswalk out of the Underworld? I understand she has business to do on theros, but couldn't she leave and come back at a different point? Or am I missing something in the lore?

She's dead. She can't planeswalk out because she's dead. If she were on any other plane when she died, she would have ceased to exist. She exists like a spirit in corporeal form in the Underworld.

If that makes any sense. Just think of her as being in the Greek Underworld, and think of all the heroes who died and escaped, even with their fantastic abilities. It's a very low number. If that makes any more sense.

Simply put Elspeth is just too popular for her to NOT return. the only Planeswalkers I can think of that ceased to exist weren't usually very popular. this being said I have pretty limited knowledge on the stories behind magic. The only stories I am kind of versed in are about Thrun and Melira.

I always did feel that Xenagos got the short end of the stick, story-wise. Especially in retrospect, he really was more hero than villain, challenging a corrupt system with unaccountable rulers.

It's too bad that Elspeth was duped by those rulers into restoring the unfair order of things.

Xenagos was no good guy at all. His words and motivations were no different than any dictator in real life. They woo you with promise of freedom from injustice and corruption, but what they really want is power. He may be the God of Revel, but his revels are bloody, deadly, chaotic and destructive. Don't forget he coerced the minotaurs into attacking Akros, manipulated Elspeth into killing Daxos and tricked the gods into nearly destroying the world in search of Elspeth the first time she came to Theros and got her sword.

Oh no, he's no good guy at all.

GoldGhost012 Maybe it was a different god of death, who was forgotten when Erebos appeared. Maybe that God of death was the head of the pantheon, and Heliod was jealous and wanted power. Maybe Heliod created a returned rebellion that escaped from the underworld. People started to doubt that the old god of death could keep the dead under control. Then Erabos rounds-up all of the returned and everybody starts worshiping him instead. The old head of the pantheon fades to obscurity, and in Heliod waltzes.

I would be way happier having Xenagos back than Elspeth.

None of Elspeth's cards have ever been great in more than one format (Standard).

At least with Xenagos you can ramp like a pro in both Standard and Commander. Also he's buff as hell. Serves as an inspiration reminding me not to buy that fourth Taco. Anything I can do to be a little bit like my Hero.
