Just saw this card:http://tappedout.net/mtg-card/fall-of-the-hammer/

Does Purphoros lose his hammer?

Thor (not Marvel's) lost his hammer sometimes, and shit went down. Like, he rampaged.

In the flavor-text, it kinda seems like he's throwing it at something, or somebody, but still.

And, why did he drop it in the first place?

"Fall of the hammer", "the hammer falls", and "fall of the gavel" are all phrases meaning "the end of a downward swing" of a hammer (or hammer shaped object in the case of the gavel). It is not necessarily that it was dropped or thrown and fell, it may have been swung with a firm grasp on the handle. Think of it as Purphoros crushing mortals under his hammer instead of him throwing it at them.

I just looked at that card and it prompted me to look at the original Hammer of Purphoros and it bothers me that it is a 2-handed hammer based on the head to handle ratio. This means that it isn't a smithing hammer since a smith will hold what he is working with one hand and have the hammer in the other.

This means that even in the time of peace leading up to current events the God of the Forge was preparing himself a weapon. It may be benign or it may be a plot by Purphoros and Nylea to raise Xenegos since RG seems to have been the only two color combo to not have a god since nothing is said of Xenegos having to kill one.

I see the phrase, and i suppose it clears up the meaning, but the art depicts the hammer falling on a mountain. I don't know, it just kinda looks like an accident. That, or Purphoros is just really pissed at that mountain.

If you notice all the debris is falling in an arc trailing from the lower right face of the hammer as if the hammer were swung. It isn't a circular pattern like it would be if it were dropped. So Purphoros was pissed off at the mountain or some mortal on the mountain.

Yeah, I agree with the debris and all. Case closed. Kind of wanted him to lose his hammer and go bat-shit tough =)
