Flavor of Infinite Combos

So, Melira, Sylvok Outcast , Viscera Seer and Kitchen Finks are sitting in a room. The Kitchen Finks is killed and roasted for dinner, gaining you two life, but it comes back a little weaker. Melira feels bad, and does some stuff and heals it up for slaughter again.

But seriously, what the hell. Let's try to explain infinite combos in the context of a fantasy world.

Melira might be a bad example. This combo really doesn't make sense. But look at Deceiver Exarch and Splinter Twin . The Exarch is a Phyrexian Cleric who can either drain the magical power out of something (tap it) or restore its magical power (untap it). Some kind of ritual (enchanting it with Splinter Twin ) gives the exarch the power of creating a clone of itself. The clone can also restore the magical power of something and so restores the original exarch's power. Because his power has been restored the original exarch can again make a clone of itself that restores his power and so on.

My favorite.. Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank .

"Alright, I'll just get this 'helmet' put in place. Looks good.. good. Now I'll just turn on the memory grinder. Did I say grinder? I meant finder. No, no.. don't worry about a little pain. It's not going to kill you. Well.. maybe a lot of little pains..."

The Melira one is perfectly reasonable. Melira lived on Mirrodin while it was being taken over by the Phyrexians, but she was immune to their oil. More importantly, she could give others that same immunity. It's reasonable, then, to think that she could provide immunity from other kinds of mystical weakness.

We know some ouphes (like Kitchen Finks ) that die can come back at a fraction of their former strength. However, as I said, Melira can give others immunity from mystical weakness. This combo simply means that her powers cover whatever makes the ouphes weaker upon return, as well as Phyrexian corruption.

And the Viscera Seer and the Kitchen Finks just do what they normally do. They're simply brought together with Melira to use their talents for a bigger goal.

Interesting thread here. I think I'll throw in my two cents on my favorite infinite combo: Mind Over Matter + Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind . Through his genius, Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind realizes that there is a thin line between the reality of the third dimension and the fourth dimension, utilizes his magic, and basically rewrites the world particle by particle. All forces, all matter, are now his to command in the symphony of his greatness. Add in a Library of Leng and ole' Nivvy has a library to record his knowledge in. Alternatively, Curiosity + Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind could be him stumbling upon an amazing invention... Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind + Tandem Lookout could be the lookout reporting the weak spots on the enemy. Helm of the Ghastlord + Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind is a bit trickier to explain, but it could be the helm gives Nivvy the ability to enhance his ability to burn people with his genius... Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind + Ophidian Eye seems harder to explain. No ideas there.

But, can anyone explain the phenomena of Deadeye Navigator + Palinchron ?

I can only attribute Palinchron untapping lands to something like his presence rejuvenating the land of their magical mana, but that seems far-fetched.

The Deadeye Navigator part is easier. The Navigator is a guide through the world of spirits, and he is able to transport his passengers back and forth between the ether and reality. When one of his passengers reenters the real world, they see it as all new because their short time spent in nonexistence cleared their memories.

At least, something like that.

The Aphetto Alchemist heard stories of a rivals machine. A machine , he assured himself, only he knew how to use to it's full potential. Known not just for brewing potions, but also trouble, he decided the great machine was not only going to belong to him, but was his right as it's only true master. Listlessly he walked into the rivals workshop. One footstep among many is silent, but one footstep alone is a different story. He'd set off the Intruder Alarm ! The nonchalant walk of The Alchemist quickly turned into a flat sprint. He'd come too far for the machine to leave empty handed, but he could tell he being closed in on. He'd thought he caught a break the moment he laid eyes on the hulking mechanical apparatus, only to find he was the one that was caught. Guards stood just behind him, at the ready, but The Alchemist had no mind for stopping now. Again he made a blitz to the machine, with just enough time to pull away the Summoning Station . Slamming the button produced a small grey colored creature with taloned toed feet, a boney spine, and both hands having 2 sharp fingers... Pincers. With the alarm sending the alchemist into a panic, he hastily pressed the button of the station. Every press equaled a Pincer, until the guards gaze met a snide smile, safely behind a newly amassed army of creatures.

Explain the second combo in this article. I dare you all!

Crackleburr uses its awesome magic energy to rejuvinate the energy of Ley Druid , who's escence has been laced with magical intelligence, and an Izzet Staticaster , who uses his power to shock two Deep-Slumber Titan s, and itself, while in the process unsumoning a Memnite , which immediately returns from the aether resummoned. A Boros Charm protects the titans from being damaged, but the titans awake and are angry. Meanwhile, the druid uses his newfound revitalation to coax a land that has been boosted by Dawn's Reflection to produce more mana. Finally, the crackleburr uses its energy and the newfound mana to manipulate the titans energy to make them exhausted, then use the drained energy to send a lightning bolt at the opponents face. Electricity cackles in the air from the cackburrs magic and staticasters shocking energy, the roars of the awakened titans penetrate the air, the land hums as it gushes mana, and in the air forms a giant cyclone from which the memnite apperes, before being sucked back in by the manipulation of the cackleburr, only letting out a squeek of protest, while the opponent lies twitching on the ground as the cackleburr sends bolt after bolt after bolt at his face. I challenge you to explain crazy combo, the first combo listed here: http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/Article.aspx?x=mtg/daily/ftl/272, or list the flavor of every little synergy in synergistic slivers, even if it's no even a legit combo. And I mean EVERY synergy.

The thing with slivers though, is in the lore, they become their surroundings. So if you're surrounded by a bunch of things with wings, you're going to grow wings.

September 14, 2014 1:56 p.m.

that's much better lol

September 14, 2014 1:57 p.m.

Alright, we made nine days of silence!

But, the problem: you have combos, but not the flavor for them.

September 14, 2014 2:53 p.m.

You summon up mana and bend time with Time Warp . Then, you summon Archaeomancer , who reads the past and restores your memory of warping time. The temporal manipulation buys you some time, but archaeomancer is scared away by a Species Gorger . With your memory of the time warp fresh in your mind, you again cast it, then resummon archaeomancer. He looks into the past and sees that you fasted time warp. He then reminds you of it, and the cycle starts all over again, while your opponent watches helplessly, unable to do anything but watch as you use and re-use time.

Devoted Druid draws out the mana within her own heart! but is now exhausted from her effort. She decides to rejuvenate her energy in exchange for growing older. This dismays Quillspike , which thinks that the Druid would taste better when younger. It uses the mana produced by the Druid and devours her old age, which fuels it and makes it larger. The Druid then repeats her mana-ritual, growing older when she is rejuvenated. The quillspike absorbs her age each time, and grows larger and larger and larger. Finally, the Mage that summoned quillspike commands it to attack that mage's enemy, and it does so enthusiastically, crushing the opponent into the floor.

Grim grin is hungry, and so he sacrifices the Gravecrawler and devours the energy that kept gravecrawler alive, making him stronger and more powerful. A ghoulcaller notices the dead crawler, and harnessing the power of his Rooftop Storm , he returns the crawler. Grim grin devours it's energy, and the process is repeated until finnally, grim grin is extremely powerful and attacks, destroying the opponent.
