How would the Immortal Sun trap Bolas?

If Azor managed to drop Bolas on Ixalan with the Immortal Sun, Bolas would just find the sun and smash it.

The sun radiates massive amounts of magic, so for someone with Bolas' talents it shouldn't be hard to find. Even if the sun is somehow indestructible (it isn't) Bolas could manipulate the threads of magic within it.

Sure Azor could give the sun to some mortals to protect it, but I honestly doubt a sparkless Azor and a bunch of mortals could hold off an Elder Dragon of Bolas' power, especially now that we know how vulnerable Azor is to telepathic magics.

Seriously, what kind of plan was this? Were Ugin and Azor insane?

I doubt that Bolas would even smash it, he would probably steal it and trap the guildpack. Hope Vraska realizes Bolas is evil. Jace kind of seems to have a plan, i'm not sure though. Will this be the end of Bolas? 0.1111111%

I fancy that whatever use they had planned for the immortal sun, it probably involved taking away Bolas' spark permanently and returning Azor's.

I think the fact that it binds planeswalkers to ixalan is just its continual after effect, seeing as it was never actually used for its intended purpose.

Vraska should definitely share all her knowledge about her "employer" with Jace ASAP...

To be honest, it seems like a pretty good way to weaken Bolas. Not directly though.

Just get his henchmen sent there and trap them, and you remove one of his major resources.

Considering that the immortal sun and Azor both run on heiromancy (the same magic that makes Gideon the numbskull nearly invulnerable), Im certain that if the plan was to trap bolas on Ixalan, Azor would have made the sun as close to indestructible as anything can be.
Yes bolas bypassed Gideons heiromancy on amonkhet, but Gideon is also an amateur beefslab who doesnt understand how to weild his own magic, as compared with Azor who has sculpted countless planes with it. I do honestly believe its safe to say that a pre-mending ancient walker like Azor could have enchanted the immortal sun sufficiently well as to protect it from bolas.

The Immortal Sun isn't particularly durable. Angrath melted the thing with his foot. Some rando minotaur. I'm sure Bolas' fire is a teensy bit hotter.

Yup, that stupid Minotaur but, you have to admit, Angrath, the Flame-Chained is a good card. I really don't know how anything would trap Bolas. He is pretty potent. He probably had this scheme planed millennium beforehand, as he has demonstrated in the past. Could they be bringing back Ugin as Azor's helper?

Perhaps when they transported Bolas to Ixalan Ugin and Azor intended to team up on him back when they were pre-mending walkers and just needed a way to stop him from escaping. Though the way Azor is talking this was meant to be a prison and not a grave. It just seems like a bad idea unless they have a way of weakening Bolas.

Azor would not have been a pre mending planeswalker. He would be a pre mending mortal who lost his spark to the Immortal Sun, who would promptly have his mind plumbed. Ugin wasn't capable of simply cracking Bolas in combat, otherwise this scheme wouldn't be a thing.

I seriously hope the plan wasn't "Unleash the fucking dinosaurs on him"

chosenone124 Actually it didnt melt the Immortal Sun, he had one foot on it and one off. He melted the floor beside it, however it was unaffected. It said, Angrath had one foot on the Immortal Sun and one foot on the normal floor, and the magnified heat of his body had caused his other foot to sink through the gold.

I actually think there's been a key misunderstanding as to how the immortal sun works.

As we've seen from Jace's use of the Guildpact magic, the Heiromantic enchantment is a compelling force that binds someone into a contract. Azor was bound to the guildpact because he was the Parun of the Azorius. As the guildpact, Jace was able to utilise Azor's own heiromantic magic against him. Azor was compelled by his own contract.

I think the immortal sun works in a same manner. If you notice, the immortal sun doesn't actually provent planeswalkers from leaving Ixalan, rather in compels them to return. I think when planeswalkers arrive on Ixalan they enter some sort of tacit contract that compels them always to return by the law of the plane.

I would therefore assume that by the same token a planeswalker bound by the contract would be compelled not to destroy the eternal sun. Instead upon possessing it, they would be compelled to use its power for themselves.

This is the perfect trap for a power hungry planeswalker like Bolas. His only way out would be to destroy the Sun, but instead he would be bound by a compulsion to use its power.

This not only serves to protect the Sun from Bolas himself, but it also means the only ones who are not bound to preserve the sun, ie. non-planeswalkers (never having entered the tacit contract), would be powerless to destory the sun as well, as they would be incapable of arresting it from Bolas' control.

That's just my theory though.

Philigan87, I just saw that and that makes a lot of sense? But now what does that mean for the Sun in Bolas's hand?

The other question is why Vraska and Jace didn't feel compelled to wield the Sun's power.

The Sun in Bolas' hands would probably cause him to rule over the plane for eternity

chosenone124 Well firstly, I think we can safely say everything I theorized was wrong, so it no longer matters, lol.

But I would say, neither Vraska nor Jace actually laid hands/set foot on the Sun, so they were never in any form of possession of it.

Lastly I think the Sun will only work on a plane where Azor's heiromancy runs strong, which is why Bolas is taking it to Ravnica.
