I feel Like Sorin Is Out Of Character

Sorin has always been a walker whose actions are driven by a long sighted sense of self-preservation. So why does he seem so rash? For example, he seals Nahri in the vault when she is the sole jailor of the elderzi a threat Sorin clearly fears. He could have just has easily beaten her to near death the old fashion way or simply went with her to Zendikar. Instead he jails the jailor and causes Zendikar's and his own worlds doom. Anyone have anyway to explain this? Or has Sorin's character undergone a shocking change?
I like when you say lore things. They make sense in my head brain. Say more lore things more often.

GoldGhost012, can you just do a TLDR of every UR from now on?

I still can't agree with that. Sorin was being rash which isn't in his nature and now it's come back to bite him. I suppose he had no choice but it still feels off to me.
What about him killing Avacyn then? I know she was like "nah bro", "I'm not going to be helped by a monster" but there were surely alternatives then killing her right? Like just leaving, because she was already sane again, right? Thoughts?

avacyn was not sane again. He killed avacyn because that was olivia's requirment to help him.
the real question should be "why does he think he needs olivia to fight against nahiri?"

pizzagod13: I don't think Sorin's being rash, he's being vengeful. Sorin knows better than almost anyone just how powerful the Eldrazi can be, and understands that they (generally) can't be fought. A team of oldwalkers couldn't defeat the Eldrazi eons ago, and now planeswalkers have become significantly depowered. The Gatewatch was able to defeat the Eldrazi on Zendikar by taking advantage of the plane's impressive hedron network, its erratic mana, and its powerful leylines. Innistrad doesn't have any of that, so it's going to make defeating or sealing Emrakul that much harder.
In addition, Sorin toiled for so long to create Avacyn and the magic protecting Innistrad. Not only is the plane being eaten by Eldrazi, but even if it somehow does survive, then the balance Sorin worked so hard to create with Avacyn is shattered. Without Avacyn, humans are able to be preyed on without consequence by the creatures of the night (vampires, werewolves, etc.). Eventually the vampires (and others) would hunt the humans into extinction and would starve.
And to add sprinkles on that heaping pile of suck, Sorin has to unmake Avacyn himself, destroying the magic protections in order to keep her from tearing the plane apart. I think we can forgive the angry and despondent vampire for being a little moody. Plus Emrakul's madness may be affecting him. It's possible!
There were 2 alternatives to killing Avacyn: fixing her or retreating. Retreating isn't a good option because she was in better shape than Sorin was and the battle favored her as it dragged on longer and longer. It's also unlikely that he would be able to planeswalk away, because planeswalking requires concentration and mana to pull off, like a spell. And if he managed to planeswalke to another area on Innistrad, she would be able to sense his arrival and go on the hunt.
So that leaves fixing her, which likely needs 2 things to happen: Sorin needs time to prepare the necessary spells and Avacyn needs to not kill him while he does so. And clearly she wasn't about to try to stop killing him. Sorin could die trying, but if he fails and she kills him before he fixes her, then Innistrad is still doomed to implode via the plane's madness and Avacyn going nuts.
Avacyn wasn't actually completely sane. If she was cured of the madness, then she would have seen that Sorin needed to fix her for the good of Innistrad. She can't really perform her duty as the plane's protector well if she's susceptible to the madness. Instead, she focuses on the fact that she was able to fall prey to the madness and blames Sorin for making her imperfect. Because she's flawed and still insane, he must have created her for this purpose, and thus Sorin is the main mastermind/villain behind her madness.
I mean, your mileage may vary, but those are my takes on the subjects.
Spootyone: I feel like you're trying to tell me something... ;)
vault: I could, but where's the fun in that? Why not just read the story? :D
asasinater13: Pretty sure he needs Olivia to fend off the Eldrazi while he goes after Nahiri.

I think the most out of character thing he's done is accept that he needs help. also I reallyw ant to know what he did for a full year while nahiri was loose on his plane before now.

asasinater13, I think he spent that year searching for Ugin.

Alright, I guess I can see that well only time will tell if Sorin don fucked up or not (knowing wizards however, Emmy will be stopped and know important characters will die... somehow)

we had a story where sorin saw ugin and he didn't ask for help or update ugin on anything happening on Innistrad involving nahiri. So yes he did search for Ugin but it feels off that it took him a year to find tarkir and off that "he wasn't confronting nahiri because he was looking for ugin to help him" and "he didn't even tell ugin about nahiri when directly asked about her". it feels lazy.

Sorin is being less out of character and is showing more of his true primary black side.
Sorin is primarily interested in 2 things: whatever holds his attention and his own interests. Innistrad being safe is very high on his list of interests and the plan to create magic borders protecting Innistrad holds a large part of his attention. So when Nahiri arrives telling him about the Eldrazi's escape and the fact she managed to reseal them, he's briefly interested until he learns they're resealed. He's also very weak from creating Avacyn and Innistrad's magic borders, so he wouldn't want to leave until he's back to full strength so he has the best chance of survival. This is also the reason he doesn't beat down Nahiri; he was too weak to last in an elongated conflict and he would have been forced, against his will and interests, back into a conflict that he thinks doesn't concern him anymore.
So instead he puts Nahiri where she's out of the way. Why didn't he release her after he recovered? Because she would be pissed, and it's not in his best interests to deal with her again. Besides, she already resealed the Eldrazi, so what's the worst that could happen?
