Just had a thought about the Eldrazi's purpose....

What if the Eldrazi Titans were meant to purify land? Like they get rid of any infections? It seems rather obvious to me now, Phyrexia will make its due appearance soon, whether it's on Kaladesh or not. But i feel as though Ugin was right when he reprimanded the gatewatch for killing Ulamog and Kozilek. He did mention that their deaths could have repercussions throughout the multiverse. I believe that in some point in time, they were going to have to annihilate Phyrexians and purify the worlds. What if Emrakul sealed herself in the moon, waiting for the gatewatch to understand that they will need her help to fight off the Phyrexians? Let me know what you think down below.

That's a great insight! Someone needs to kill the New Phyrexians, and it would have been awesome to have an Eldrazi v.s. New Phyrexia set if the Gatewatch didn't kill Emrakul's brothers.

I just consider them laws. They are non corporal beings in the ther, the versions we see are simply avatars, manifestations of what they truly are. This is true.

Now my interpretation. they are behind comprehension because they are aspects of the ther just as gravity and mass are, they are intrinsically linked to it much like the flow of mana. The blind eternities can't contain physical beings. When demons die they rest there, when Eldrazi are fed they don't rest, they are constantly asserting their power through what we'd call physics. They are the space between mana that holds everything together.

So no, I imagine they don't purify things. They especially aren't anti-phyrexian, interesting idea though.

Simon_Williamson I understand your insight, but I was gathering my information from what they did on Zendikar, which was turn EVERYTHING to dust. They even turned dust into more dust. I think it's completely conceivable that they would've eventually found New Phyrexia and just destroyed everything. I can't remember where I saw it, but something said the Eldrazi aren't an end, they're a means to a beginning.

There was an article I read shortly after the Eldritch Moon story wrapped up that theorized the purpose of the Eldrazi using all of our knowledge of them up to that point.

The theory goes that they are not meant to necessarily purify land, they're intended to recycle and refurbish already dead or dying worlds. If I recall, the author thought that the multiverse was so massive that eventually, as planes died off, mana would be unable to pass through the eternities to other planes, and the multiverse would slowly die of atrophy. The Eldrazi combat this, looking for planes that have died in order to prevent total collapse of the multiverse. Each of the titans even had a specific purpose to that end.

Ulamog consumes what's left of the world to give a blank slate. Kozilek constructs a new reality in it's place. Emrakul then fills it with life.

The reason they attacked Zendikar was only because the Three lured them there. They're beings of almost pure instinct, and being tricked to come to this world, which was not dead, they did as they would to any other world, though they were confused. Thus, they caused destruction and mayhem to the creatures that did live there.

Emrakul is a bit more aware than the other two though, enough that she left. But once more, she was pulled and attracted to a plane against her will, by Nahiri, to Innistrad. This time, presumably due to the way Nahiri had bent the mana of the plane, Emrakul believed she was supposed to be here, but because Ulamog hadn't eaten the world and Kozilek hadn't built a new one in it's place, Emrakul couldn't create new life, only unconsciously corrupt the already present creatures. But she became aware that what she was doing was wrong, the "soil [wasn't] reacting as expected." But she had no ability to leave at this point, so she used Tamiyo to escape and save Innistrad, at the cost of her own imprisonment.

Basically yeah, the Gatewatch has probably screwed up the balance of the multiverse, as Ugin feared, and if something isn't done soon, planes will start dying left and right, choking the mana flowing through the Blind Eternities, causing more planes to die, until there simply isn't enough energy to keep life going.

This has been suggested several times, and besides, Maro responded with surprise once someone questioned him on a Phyrexia vs Eldrazi, asking the person whether they hate the multiverse.

I like the idea of the Eldrazi recycling the Multiverse. I just don't think it's the story. The story is that the Eldrazi were lured there by Zendikar's unique mana. I guess the story could be modified to say that Sorin, Nahiri, and Ugin actually made the Eldrazi believe that the Plane was dying, but that isn't the story as it is now.

What is interesting is we visit Nicol Bolas in the next block. He has ties to the Phyrexians, or at least he did in the past. I would have to read some more lore to see where all of that stands. I need to figure out what happened with everything. He had connections through Tezzeret, who in turn controlled a force of Phyrexians. Is the Bolas Phyrexia force dead?

Bolas also lured the Planeswalkers to Zendikar to release the Eldrazi. Perhaps he wanted them free so that they would be killed. Maybe he wants to replace them? If they are killed, perhaps he could absorb their power from the BE. He may have needed them dead for other reasons, like he wants to drain Planes of their mana and didn't want them to show up while he was doing it.

It will be interesting to see what goes on in the next block. Maybe the Phyrexians come after? A Gatewatch and Emrakul team? I think Bolas can handle it. ;)

All I know for sure, if Wizards decides to kill Nicol Bolas, I F***ING QUIT!!

Nicol Bolas is Love. Nicol Bolas is Life. All Hail Nicol Bolas!!

Actually, the story is that the Three lured the Eldrazi there, specifically.

When they decided that the Eldrazi needed to be handled, they needed to find a place to do it, and they reluctantly decided that Zendikar would be an ideal location for their prison, because of it's unique mana and their innate ability to begin work quickly and unabated, it already being protected by Nahiri. They chose Zendikar, then had the Eldrazi come. That is the canon.

I understand that the Eldrazi were lured there. I was under the impression that they needed the life and active mana on a Plane to lure the Eldrazi to it.

If that's the case, then the theory can't be right. Also if the theory were correct, they could/should have lured them to a dead Plane.

While I like the idea, it just doesn't seem to fit with the lore.

They didn't know that was their purpose. They probably didn't need the unique mana of Zendikar. They just assumed that the Eldrazi were engines of destruction bent on annihilating beauty and life, so selected a plane that fit that among their other criteria. They didn't have to be correct to be successful. There's more evidence than just what I said, naturally, with more citations to the literature, in the original article among the many others that meet the same conclusion.

The theory stands. Merely a theory still, but not contradicted thus far.

kanokarob That doesn't make it strongly supported. That's fine of course, some people just don't like postulations that aren't strongly supported.

Like I said, there is more information I didn't get into that does support it quite well.

There's some quotes from when Tazri had visions of/with Kozilek, and much of what is said during The Promised End, both by Emeria as well as by the chain veil, which strongly suggests that at least something like this theory is the case. Read the literature, there is evidence to support this, as I'm sure there's evidence to support alternative theories, none of which are wrong until otherwise confirmed by Wizards, so long as the literature hints at them.
