List of Commanders by Home Plane

Lore forum

Posted on Jan. 22, 2017, 2:14 a.m. by DemonDragonJ

Now that WotC's Commander products are an annual product (I still refer to the format itself as Elder Dragon Highlander/EDH, because I was introduced to it by that name), I wish to make a list of all the legendary creatures, or commanders, who have appeared in those sets, by plane of origin.

I shall be including both new legendary creatures introduced in those sets, as well as previous cards that were reprinted in those sets (which includes Commander's Arsenal), but I will not include legendary creatures that have not been printed in a Commander set, even if other creatures from their plane have been in those sets. I shall first list the planes known to be home to at least one commander, alphabetically by name, and then list each commander from that plane, alphabetically by name. If a commander is from a specific region or belongs to a specific faction on that plane, I shall list that region or faction in parenthesis after their name.

Muraganda Show

What does everyone else think of this list? It took a great amount of time to write this list, so I hope that you appreciate it. I would not at all be surprised to learn that I mistakenly listed a commander's home plane as unknown, when it is actually known, so please let me know if I made any mistakes, and I also shall add new legendary creatures to this list whenever WotC releases a new Commander set.

CChaos says... #2

The list is interesting because it reveals the planes the creatures are from, though it was not necessary (for me).

It is useful for someone who is interested in the lore of the various cards on the list. Lets see, Vorthos players will appreciate it the most.

I think Riku hails from Shandalar... and I think it would be okay to list many of the Portal Three Kingdom characters come from "Earth" mainly because they were inspired by real people. Same with the Arabian Nights legendary characters. Cool list!

Triton says... #5

Marath is from Lorwyn, and I was told what Saskia's, Damia's and Oloro's planes were at one point but forgot. Also I have a feeling that Nekusar and Nin belong in Fiora due to the settings in their card artworks being of similar technology of the other legendaries' from Fiora but I'm not 100% sure.

January 22, 2017 5:30 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #6

Wee_Dragonaut, was that ever explicitly stated? I do not recall Riku's home plane ever being mentioned.

Triton, I shall change Marath's home plane, but I am certain that none of those other characters have had their home planes revealed, yet.

Wee_Dragonaut says... #7

DemonDragonJ, WotC says so here:

http://magic.wizards.com/en/story/planes/shandalar

Triton, I have looked, but I have not found any information about Marath living on Lorwyn. It does say that he lives in the modern multiverse-universe of "Dominia"

Wee_Dragonaut, thank you for that information, and I shall adjust my first post, accordingly.

Im glad someone made this. However, what is "Ir"? Is it a typo o some plane Im not aware of?

Also, according to this post, Karador is a NESSIAN Centaur, meaning he is from Theros.

January 24, 2017 5:31 p.m.

pskinn01 says... #10

RazortoothMtg: Ir is a plane introduced to us by future sight and planechase, but not been traveled to as of yet. Future site and commander did give us 1 card each I believe.

January 24, 2017 5:37 p.m. Edited.

DemonDragonJ says... #11

RazortoothMtg, a user in that thread mentioned that there is an elf in the artwork on Karador's card, and elves do not exist on Theros, plus, Karador's name does not sound Greek/Theran, so the evidence in that thread is not sufficient for me to comfortably say that he is from Theros.

Is there a way to keep this thread at the top of the page? I will be updating it every time that releases a new Commander product, and I do not wish to search for it whenever I need to do that.

DemonDragonJ says... #13

With Commander 2017 soon to be released, I shall soon be updating this thread, but I shall wait until the full set is spoiled, so that I shall need only a single session of updating it, instead of many.

Aren't you missing Vorosh, the Hunter? He should be an alternate-timeline dragon like his fellow planar chaos friend Intet, the Dreamer.

DemonDragonJ says... #15

RazortoothMtg, thank you so much for noticing that; I cannot believe that I forgot Vorosh, so I shall add him immediately.

Firebead says... #16

Rubinia Soulsinger is an old character from the Legends set, so she comes from Dominaria.

August 11, 2017 3:04 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #17

With C17 being spoiled in full today, we can add quite a lot of cards to the list.

Ovsiously all 5 of the reprinted FRF dragons (i.e Ojutai, Soul of Winter) are from Tarkir. So are both Taigams.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is from Fiora.

Not positive but I believe both the Ur-Dragon and his scion are from Dominaria.

Mairsil, Ramos, Mirri, Wasitora, Jareth, Leonine Titan, Jedit Ojanen of Efrava, and Arcanis the Omnipotent are from Dominaria

Anowon, the Ruin Sage, and Drana, Kalastria Bloodchief are from zendikar.

You already have the 5 wedge dragons from dominaria, now their shard colored counterparts (i.e Crosis, the Purger) can join them.

Azami, Lady of Scrolls, Ryusei, the Falling Star, and O-Kagachi are from Kamigawa.

Edgar Markov is innistrad.

Raksha Golden Cub is from Mirrodin.

Nazahn is unknown but Im gonna guess he's from Mirrodin.

Both niv-mizzets are from Ravnica.

Arahbo, Balan, Kess, Licia, Mathas, Vela, and Inalla are unknown.

Thank you very much, Firebeard, I shall update the first post, now.

August 11, 2017 3:27 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #19

Thank you, also, RazortoothMtg; I was planning to wait until the cards were added to the Gatherer, but your post shall make it easier for me to do so sooner than that.

August 11, 2017 3:28 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #20

They do the character explanation for the new legends in the decks each year, so we can hope a few get their home planes revealed. Other than that, I think I got everything.

August 11, 2017 3:34 p.m.

Firebead says... #21

The commanders blurb are already out. Kess is from Grixis and Nazhan from Naya/Bant.

The Ur-Drago isn't from Dominaria, it really doesn't have a plane, since is something that was born at the dawn of the multiverse, while the Scion kinda manifested on Dominaria, I think.

DemonDragonJ says... #22

Firebeard, I do not have time to edit the list and add all the new generals, now, but perhaps I shall have time to do so, later.

August 11, 2017 3:48 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

Firebeard, I do not like the idea of there being a single progenitor of dragons across the entire multiverse, because it could start a dangerous trend of all the major races (humans, elves, goblins, merfolk, vampires, and so forth) having a single progenitor or plane of origin; I personally think that it would be much more interesting if all the major races evolved on each plane independently, by coincidence.

August 12, 2017 10:34 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #24

Sorry for the double post, but, RazortoothMtg, Ramos is actually from Mercadia, as stated on the link that Firebeard provided.

August 12, 2017 10:36 a.m.

Firebead says... #25

DemonDragonJ I can understand why you say that about The Ur-Dragon, unfortunately Mtg lore hasn't never been clear if the major races had a single progenitor or a single homeplane (in the oldest lore there are, for example, hint that all the elven language from the multiverse had a common origin). However, about dragons, as you can see, it has been pretty confirmed that all the dragons of the Multiverse are descendant from the Ur-Dragon.https://twitter.com/kellydigges/status/895828640549580801

About ramos: RazortoothMtg is, in a way, correct, because Ramos' story is a lot involuted. If I remember well, he was a dragon engine built by the Thran on Dominaria almost 10.000 year ago, which then was brought to "old" Phyrexia by Yawgmoth. It was then reprogrammed by Urza once again on Dominaria, and, finally, he later crashed on Mercadia. So I would say it can be listed on Mercadia (it is revered as a god there), but with a note about its origin on Dominaria.

DemonDragonJ says... #26

Firebead, I noticed only just now that your name is not "Firebeard," so I am very sorry for calling you that, before.

Also, have the new cards been added to this website's database? I was planning to wait for them to be added before I added them to the first post of this thread.

August 12, 2017 9:52 p.m.

SteelSentry says... #27

Each of the new legends have a short blurb on the Mothership (http://magic.wizards.com/en/products/commander-2017-commanders)

Ramos was created by Mishra during the Brother's War, and was re-purposed by Urza, and now lives in Mercaida

Arahbo is like the Ur-Dragon but for cats

Kess, Dissident Mage is from Grixis

Marsil, Wasitora and Mirri are from Dominaria

Nazahn is from Alara (Originally from Naya, but the Conflux merged it with Bant)

The others aren't stated here

oops, didn't see that Firebead posted this ahead of me

August 12, 2017 10:10 p.m.

Firebead says... #29

DemonDragonJ no problem for my name. By the way, I've seen you listed Roon of the Hidden Realm from Bant. Even if visually he seems a Bant rhox, I don't think it has been evere confirmed.

August 14, 2017 3:49 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #30

Firebead, in that case, I shall edit my first post to show that status.

August 14, 2017 1:21 p.m.

August 14, 2017 1:59 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #32

Why are some cards not properly displaying their links? I am certain that I typed everything correctly, so does anyone have any ideas why that is occurring?

August 14, 2017 2:02 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #33

User:DemonDragonJ the way cards are added to T/O isn't really super refined. It's just that upgraded users can add them manually by volunteer work, so the most likely problem is no one has added them yet.

Inalla, Archmage Ritualist

Arahbo, Roar of the World

Ramos, Dragon Engine

Licia, sanguine Tribune

It seems that Arahbo is working. I don't know why it's not working for you. The other legends are in the T/O database just aren't showing- you can see what is in the set here.

Also, the Ojutai Taigam isn't working because someone named their deck the same as the card, and T/O prioritizes decks in that instance. I'm not sure how to fix it. Maybe ask one of the mods?

August 14, 2017 2:37 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #34

RazortoothMtg, I had accidentally listed Arahbo as "roar of the wild," not "roar of the world," but I have now fixed that mistake, and I hope that the others work, soon.

August 14, 2017 3:04 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #35

Inalla's link works in the deckbuilder, but apprently not in comments and such. huh.

yobkay, I do not believe that real-world locations should be included in this list.

January 27, 2018 2:34 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #38

I have added the legendary creatures from Planechase 2012 to this list, because, while they have not yet been included in any Commander products, there was no other list for them.

Let's get more happening on Fiora

July 11, 2018 1:13 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #40

With the upcoming release of Commander 2018, I have added the legendary creatures from that set to this list.

I imagine that Arixmethes is from Theros, judging from its name.

Now that both Bruna and Gisela have appeared in Commander sets, I really hope that Sigarda does, as well, as she is the only one of the multicolored angels from Innistrad who has not, thus far, and she also is very expensive, currently.

August 7, 2018 9:51 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #41

I know each commander set comes with a little blurb about each commander, have they released those online yet or do we have to wait to actually purchase the decks to see them? They sometimes tell the plane.

August 8, 2018 3:57 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #42

RazortoothMtg, unfortunately, there has been no lore at all about the commanders in this set, but I hope that there is, soon. All that has been revealed, thus far, is that Aminatou and Estrid's home planes are planes that have not yet been visited, or even named, yet.

DemonDragonJ says... #44

NecroPony, thank you very much for that link, although the only new revelation was that Gyrus is from the Jund shard of Alara, which I have now added to the list.

The page also mentioned Brudiclad being from Dominaria, but that should not be possible, since it creates myr tokens, and myr exist only on Mirrodin.

August 9, 2018 5:20 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #45

User:DemonDragonJ I don't think that they mean he's from Dominaria, but rather pointing out he only exists in one possible future (the only card he's referenced on is Sarcomite Myr from Future Sight) that we were able to see BECAUSE OF the rifts on Dominaria. Based on the "who melds flesh and metal in glorious harmony" line it's pretty obvious he is on New Phyrexia, however he might not even exist in this timeline at all or maybe only exists in the future and isn't alive yet.

DemonDragonJ says... #46

Today, Mark Rosewater revealed that Kaalia is from the Bant shard of Alara (obviously after the shards merged, given her color combination), so I have updated this list to reflect that status.

Caerwyn says... #47

Could you provide me a link to Rosewater's statement's on Kaalia? That seems very interesting.

DemonDragonJ says... #48

cdkime, he revealed that information in this article.

July 9, 2019 9:31 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #49

With the upcoming release of Commander 2019, I have added the commanders from that set.

Unlike most Commander sets, nearly every legendary creature in this set is from an existing plane; with Grismold and Pramikon being the only creatures whose home planes are unknown; however, I personally believe that Grismold is from Eldraine, since he seems to have the aesthetic that one would expect from a world inspired by Arthurian legend and Grimm's Fairy Tales.

Someone stated that Sevinne was from Dominaria, but I am not certain of the exact origin of that information. K'rrik was born on Dominaria as a human, but he was reborn on Phyrexia, so I have listed Phyrexia as his home plane.

August 17, 2019 10:06 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #50

Some new information was revealed about the commanders, recently, as seen in this link.

Rayami is actually male, despite having a feminine name, and I am very glad that his biography disproves the fan theory that Sorin is the progenitor of vampires on Zendikar, because I like the idea of all the major races coincidentally evolving independently on each plane.

Kadena is actually from the Silumgar clan, despite having Sultai colors, so I shall update this list to reflect that.

I am very sad that Pramikon’s home plane was not revealed, and I also noticed that Grismold is conspicuously absent, which further convinces me that he is from the upcoming Eldraine, meaning that WotC wishes to reveal as little as possible about that plane before the previews officially begin.
