List of Commanders by Home Plane

Lore forum

Posted on Jan. 22, 2017, 2:14 a.m. by DemonDragonJ

Now that WotC's Commander products are an annual product (I still refer to the format itself as Elder Dragon Highlander/EDH, because I was introduced to it by that name), I wish to make a list of all the legendary creatures, or commanders, who have appeared in those sets, by plane of origin.

I shall be including both new legendary creatures introduced in those sets, as well as previous cards that were reprinted in those sets (which includes Commander's Arsenal), but I will not include legendary creatures that have not been printed in a Commander set, even if other creatures from their plane have been in those sets. I shall first list the planes known to be home to at least one commander, alphabetically by name, and then list each commander from that plane, alphabetically by name. If a commander is from a specific region or belongs to a specific faction on that plane, I shall list that region or faction in parenthesis after their name.

What does everyone else think of this list? It took a great amount of time to write this list, so I hope that you appreciate it. I would not at all be surprised to learn that I mistakenly listed a commander's home plane as unknown, when it is actually known, so please let me know if I made any mistakes, and I also shall add new legendary creatures to this list whenever WotC releases a new Commander set.

You forgot Uril, the Miststalker from the plane of Naya

DemonDragonJ says... #2

Jayden, I appreciate your suggestion, but Uril has never been printed in a Commander set, so it is not eligible for this list.

This list is weirdly up to date and incomplete.

Great list! Thanks!

DemonDragonJ says... #6

Optimator, I am very glad that you like it, and I update it whenever a new Commander product is released.

With the upcoming release of Commander 2020, I have added all of the legendary creatures from that set to this list, and, because this list now has a great number of creatures, I have sorted the creatures into separate categories, with each plane being covered by its own spoiler tag, to make them easier to browse.

Is anyone else here displeased that the only commanders from Lorwyn/Shadowmoor (at the time of this post) are both reprints? I do hope that the next Commander set, Commander Legends, introduces some new commanders from that plane.

There is a theory that Licia and Saskia are from the same plane, due to the brief backstories given for each of them; does anyone else think that that is an interesting theory?

June 4, 2020 4:44 p.m.

Optimator says... #10

DemonDragonJ Maybe? I'd buy it.. but... Licia looks like she's from Theros even though there are no vampires there. Saksia looks veeeryy Balduvian. Without full confirmation I couldn't really call it one way or the other.

DemonDragonJ says... #11

Optimator, some players actually feel that Licia looks more Roman than Greek, so I wonder if that may be a hint at a plane that WotC will visit in the future?

Personally, I don’t like how this only lists commanders from sets that were made specifically for commander, since there are far more commanders out there than just those specifically printed for the purpose, but to each their own. Do you have the two new commanders from the Zendikar Rising commander decks in here?

September 11, 2020 10:49 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #13

VampDemigod, I have listed all legendary creatures who have appeared in a Commander set, so I see no reason to include legendary who have not appeared in Commander sets, and I also have not yet included the two new legendary creatures from the Zendikar Rising decks, but I shall add them, now, so I thank you for mentioning them.

September 13, 2020 4:37 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #14

With the upcoming release of Zendikar Rising and its EDH decks, I have added Anowon, the Ruin Thief and Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor to this list.

September 13, 2020 4:43 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #15

With the upcoming release of Commander Legends, there will be a significant number of new creatures to add to this list, but I do not have time to add them, currently, so I shall provide links to the two-part article in which WotC provides information about each new legendary creature, for later reference.

DemonDragonJ says... #16

I still am not ready for the daunting task of adding all the legendary creatures from Commander Legends to this list (but I do promise that I will add them, eventually), but I realized that, while I added the two new legendary creatures from the Zendikar Rising Commander decks to this list, I forgot the reprinted commanders, so I added them to this list.

DemonDragonJ says... #17

Hopefully, I should be able to add the new commanders from Commander Legends to this list, today, but should I include only the cards that were in the normal set, or should I also include the foil etched cards, as well?

December 24, 2020 8:42 a.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #18

I finally added all the new legendary creatures from Commander Legends, as well as the reprinted cards that previously had not been featured in any Commander sets, which was a daunting task, but I was able to complete it.

Several creatures' home planes are still unknown, but it is known that Archelos and Kwain are from the same plane, and that Licia and Prava are from the same plane, as well (and many players are speculating that Saskia is from that plane, also).

What does everyone think, now that I have updated this list?

January 31, 2021 2:35 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #19

I forgot to include the cards from Kaldheim Commander in my previous update, so I have now added them to this list.

February 2, 2021 10:14 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #20

Today, WotC posted the stories of each legendary creature in both Strixhaven and Commander 2021, so I shall add those creatures to this list, soon.

April 13, 2021 9:36 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #21

I have now posted the commanders from Commander 2021 on this list; I am sorry that it took so long for me to do so, but I have been terribly busy, but they are here, now.

DemonDragonJ says... #22

I just realized that I completely forgot about the Innistrad: Midnight Hunt commanders, so I shall add them at the same time that I add the Innistrad: Crimson Vow commanders.

November 11, 2021 8:12 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #23

I have now added the legendary creatures from Midnight Hunt Commander and Crimson Vow Commander; thankfully, all but three of those creatures were from Innistrad and several of them had already appeared in Commander sets, so it did not take much time or effort to add them to the list

Rtrt227, where was that stated? The fact that it debuted in Midnight Hunt Commander suggests that it is from Innistrad.

I do plan to add the legendary creatures from New Capenna Commander to this list, soon, but, as usual, I am very busy with work, so I am not certain of when I shall be able to do that.

May 5, 2022 9:35 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #30

With the release of Streets of New Capenna, I have added the commanders from that set to this list; I could not find any lord for Jolene, Mari, or Syrix, so does anyone know to which family, if any, they belong?

May 29, 2022 3:42 p.m.

DemonDragonJ says... #31

I hope to be able to add the commanders from Dominaria United to this list, soon, but I cannot be certain about that, as I am very busy with various aspects of my life, currently.

Hi! It’s been a while since I’ve posted on this thread, but I recently decided to take up this project as well in the form of a deck/list, if you want to collab together lmk and I can add you! I can work on the Dominaria United commanders tonight if you’re interested!

Here’s the deck:

Triton, it seems that you are listing every legendary creature, whereas I am listing only those who are included in Commander sets, but I would not mind assisting you, if I can find the time to do so, since I often am busy with my life outside of this forum; thank you for the offer!

Triton says... #34

DemonDragonJ ahh, okay- no worries! I'll probably copy what you got here and add you as a contributor! I'm pretty active but it waxes and wanes accordingly- will for sure at least link this thread in the description! :)

DemonDragonJ says... #35

With the release of Phyrexia: All Will Be One, I have added the legendary creatures from that set's Commander product to this list, which was easy to do, since there were only a small number of legendary creatures in that set. I still need to add the legendary creatures from Dominaria United and The Brothers' War, at some point, so I hope that I shall be able to do that, soon.

DemonDragonJ says... #36

I am so far behind the current releases for this list, and WotC is releasing so many products in rapid succession that I am having difficulty keep track of them, so should I even bother to continue updating this list?
