A first look at Kaladesh, an introduction to Saheeli Rai, and the invention of a device able to transport matter though space. Uh oh.

When they noticed that it only worked on inorganic matter, my immediate thought was to see if organic matter can be transported by completely enclosing it within an inorganic container. It was quite heavily implied that the object actually gets teleported via the Blind Eternities and that is why the inorganic matter gets disintegrated. I think it would be neat to see if it could transport a planeswalker safely since they are able to travel through the Blind Eternities.
I know I'm not the only one to see the implications of an object able to create an interplanar portal. I doubt the existing matter transporter would work in that capacity, but the line of research and proof of concept clearly lead there.
I don't have a great detailed knowledge of the older lore. Does anyone know when the last time there existed something capable of creating a portal? I imagine it would be pre-mending, but by how much?

RicketyEng You have to go wayyyyy back in Magic history for that answer. The closest I can think of is the Skyship Weatherlight; it can travel between planes. This was pre-mending btw.

Obviously the most important piece of information from this story is the inclusion of Dwarves. Sure, they may not have been the stout mountain folk we're used to, but if Wizards can print some good dwarves, I would be a happy man.

And remember, it transports, currently, only inorganic matter. And though the oil corrupts living things, Phyrexians eventually become more machine than man (or animal or what have you), meaning even if that issue is never fixed, they could still make use of it, perhaps breaking open this one way door.

Errast: I am not certain if the revelation of dwarves existing on Kaladesh is the most important aspect of this story, but it was nevertheless very important, since dwarves have not been seen in the game since the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block.
I fully expect both Rashmi and Mitul, or at least Rashmi, to be legendary creatures in this set, given how prominent they were in this story.
This is the first time that Saheeli Rai has appeared in the story, and my opinion of her would have been very low, since she declined to assist Rashmi, but I am very glad that she changed her mind.
Rashmi's device was very awesome, and I, like many others, suspect that it may be able to transport matter from one plane to another, not merely across a single plane. I would not be surprised if it somehow catches the attention of Phyrexia, possibly even providing them with a means to travel to, and, thus, invade, other planes.
I do not like the fact that the story ended on a cliffhanger, but I shall remain optimistic that Rashmi's test went well, and that she shall appear again, later in the block.

DemonDragonJ. See, when Saheeli declined to help Rashmi, I agreed with her and I don't think she should have changed her mind. As you said, the device could be used to transport matter interplanery, which could then attract the attention of numerous villains including Phyrexia. While I love the idea the we see Phyrexia again, from a purely lore perspective, I am disappointed with Saheeli.

This was a very interesting story and a good way to kick off the Kaladesh block. I wonder if Saheeli will end up regretting her decision to help Rashmi. I hope we get to see more of the rebel movement.

This screams Phyrexia to me, but I think WotC will intentionally avoid that because It'l set a precedent. I hope Rashmi and Mitul get a card. Maybe we finally get the Izzet artifact general I've been waiting for?

bennybubbles: Saheeli would not have been responsible for any accidents that Rashmi's devices caused, nor would Rashmi, if she herself did not cause the accident. The inventor of a certain technology is not responsible for how other people use it; that would be the equivalent of saying that Robert Oppenheimer should be held responsible for the use of the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I'm not saying that either of them would or should be responsible, but as Saheeli said in her little monologue, as a planeswalker she has certain responsibilities to the plane, and if it were me I would not have fixed the part. It's not about who causes the damage, sometimes you have to use some restraint because of the potential dangers of the technology, that's how science works in the real world.

Dredge4life: Tezzeret just showed up in flavor text on Kaladesh. They're definitely setting us up for another Phyrexian invasion.
However, I think if they do Kaladesh might fare better than Mirrodin. Mirrodin got taken over so quick not just because everything was made of metal, but also because it was a pretty primitive world, so there wasn't much in the way of organized resistance. (It had only existed for like 1000 years or so, and all of it's inhabitants were stolen from other planes, and half of them were sent back to those planes at the end of the first Mirrodin block.)
Kaladesh on the other hand seems much more industrialized and cohesive.

I don't think Phyrexia will invade Kaladesh or try to convert it. Maro said that during design he had a phrase to help it to not be Mirrodin: this is about artifacts as technology, not biology. I suspect Tezzeret has set up this inventors fair as a way to bring the best minds together for the sole purpose of seeing what technology they can come up with. He even went so far as to plant the seeds of the idea that a matter transporter is impossible, which naturally means that someone is going to pour her heart and soul into making it possible. He seeks to steal that technology for Phyrexia's or Bolas's use elsewhere.

RicketyEng, Plausible. I personally don't think they're going to have Phyrexia invading in Aether Revolt, but I do think they're going to leave the possibility open for a future set, probably with gobs of foreshadowing.

A device that transports matter through space; or __between_ planes_. If that thing crosses the Blind Eternities that could open up a whole mess of issues and the Gatewatch will likely have to intervine.
Saheeli seems like an interesting character; she has that sense of responsibility to protect the plane (
