Gah, beat me to it. But that's cool; since the external URL tag works for you.

So, it is confirmed that Angrath is a planeswalker, and that Huatli mistook Kaladesh as the golden city; but even her first walk wasn't enough to have her leave.

Very interesting. Looks like the story here is that the planeswalkers on this plane have one goal; to get off the plane.

I thought the flavour text from Angrath's Marauders was pretty unambiguous about him being a planeswalker. The bigger reveal for me was that he is a minotaur planeswalker!

I liked the poetry in the middle and the idea that warriors of the Sun Empire relate their stories in poetry. It's a neat piece of culture.

Angrath's attitude toward Huatli took an about face when he realized she was a planeswalker. Even though he seems intent on destroying things for the sake of it in lieu of being able to leave, I wonder whether or not he will remain an antagonist in the greater story.

Planeswalkers sure do seem to get angry when they're not allowed to planeswalk. Ob Nixilis tried to destroy Zendikar in retaliation for his imprisonment. Angrath can't leave Ixalan so he gathered some pirates and just goes around pillaging and burning and marauding. We have yet to find out Vraska's feelings on the matter.

We also know Vraska is on Ixalan because of Bolas, so it's possible she's so obsessed with her mission that she hasn't tried to leave Ixalan yet.

On a separate note, Angrath is probably B/R, though possibly Grixis, so assuming that Rivals of Ixalan has two 'walkers and that he's one of them, the other one will most likely be U/G, G/W, or W/U.

RicketyEng says... #6

I'm pretty sure Vraska has tried to leave. When she found Jace she made a comment about trying to walk felt like walking into a window.

Pieguy396 based on the leaked packaging from the set that became Ixalan, we can guess (and it seems likely) that the PWs in Rivals are Angrath and

Show

Wasn't sure if y'all looked at those so theres a spoiler alert thing. Ya

Also, Argy, we have a RB minotaur planeswalker now for your Worthy Minotaurs, unfortunately we have to wait till Rivals for Angrath though.

Pieguy396 says... #8

RazortoothMtg ah yeah you're absolutely right, I totally forgot about those. It'll be interesting to see how

Show

factors into the story. Does he go there on purpose trying to find Jace? For a completely different reason?

This story makes it clear that Huatli shall be a major character in the plot of this block, and I presume that she shall eventually join forces with Jace at some point, and I also imagine that Angrath shall be one of the antagonists of the block.

It is also safe to presume that the city of Orazca (clearly inspired by legends of El-Dorado) shall be a central element to the plot of this block; does it actually exist, or is it nothing more than a legend? I expect that we shall eventually learn that.

Why is it that planeswalkers cannot leave Ixalan? I definitely expect that to be central to the plot of this block, as well.

Some interesting things I actually saw in the story was that a) apparently the merfolk and dinoriders have been vying for control of ixalan for a long time, meaning that the humans built Orazca and b) apparently the symbol for the temple of Kinjiali is a black rose... like the rose insignia keeping Planeswalkers on Ixalan.

pizzagod13 says... #11

Angrath said something about the immortal sun, so maybe thats whats keeping the walkers there? I also, don't think any planeswalker will be an antagonist in this block since they all have the same goal (except for Huatli)

September 13, 2017 7:47 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #12

pizzagod13: well, since Jace kinda forgot about being a planeswalker and all, We don't really know his goals right now. I assume from the last story that Vraska will explain Ixalan's Binding to jace, and he'll want to get off, but right now we don't know. And we're not entirely sure about Vraska's goals either. We know she was given the compass by Bolas, but not what she needs to do. I assume Bolas wants Vraska to find Orazca via the Thaumatic Compass, then get rid of the binding so Bolas can do something on Ixalan. But we don't know.

ERoss8 says... #13

Is it just me, or does the symbol that was mentioned and showed (Ixilan's Binding, link not working or I can't spell) sounds a bit like the azourius guild symbol?

Can't wait for Angroth's walker story

September 13, 2017 10:50 p.m.

RicketyEng says... #14

I actually suspect Bolas wants Vraska to retrieve whatever artifact is responsible for the binding effect and take it to another plane (like Ravnica). I started a thread in which I went into more detail.

so if they make this thing a card in the next set, what would it do? players cant cast planeswalker spells?

September 14, 2017 1:11 a.m.

Argy says... #16

RazortoothMtg ooooo coolio.

Mogis, God of Slaughter will be very pleased to learn there is a Minotaur PW in Standard to represent.

September 14, 2017 2:38 a.m. Edited.

RazortoothMtg says... #17

shinobigarth you mean the thing keeping PW from leaving Ixalan? They already made that a story spotlight in Ixalan's Binding, which is a Exclusion Ritual for .

September 14, 2017 9:48 a.m.

shinobigarth says... #18

RazortoothMtg nah I'm not convinced that thats supposed to represent it. For one its not legendary and this thing is supposedly a one of a kind thing. plus it sounds like its an artifact. And thirdly it specifically effect planeswalkers which this enchantment does not. There will be something else in Rivals.

September 14, 2017 12:48 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #19

shinobigarthI guess I could see an Artifact called The Immortal Sun or something in Ixalan. I doubt it would stop people from casting planeswalkers, because for 1 you can still planeswalk into Ixalan, just not out, so you can summon PW onto the field, and because it would be too similiar to Ixalan's Binding. It'd be interesting to see a : Loyalty abilites cant be activated. Legendary Artifact.

DuTogira says... #20

I like huatli so far. Hoping to see some of her flaws revealed in future stories. As is she's a very entertaining Mary Sue.

September 14, 2017 2:04 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #21

RazortoothMtg yeah i was just spitballing thinking of something to represent it on a card and I couldn't think of how to flavorfully represent walkers not being able to leave better than not letting them be cast. Not letting their abilities be activated might be better though.

September 14, 2017 2:13 p.m.

RicketyEng says... #22

I thought of a really complex way to represent planeswalkers being unable to leave. An artifact with a triggered ability that states if a pw would be put into a graveyard due to having 0 loyalty counters, instead its controller chooses an opponent at random. The chosen player gains control of the pw and places one (or N) loyalty counter(s) on it.

The flavour here being that the pw can't walk away when it is no longer loyal to you so it gives a little loyalty to an opponent instead. This doesn't prevent them from leaving via exile or sacrifice which would flavourfully be the pw actually dying.

There might be some weird interactions with the legend rule.

September 14, 2017 4:13 p.m. Edited.

shinobigarth says... #23

That might be overly complex, but you'd have to probably do something more like "exile ~ and return them to the BF under an opponent's control" if they were going that route.

September 14, 2017 4:22 p.m.

ERoss8 says... #24

I know we've seen this in the past, but can this not only care about walkers? Every group wants it, maybe an artifact that gives your team a huge buff, and cares about pws as a second ability

September 14, 2017 5:22 p.m.

RazortoothMtg says... #25

Maybe it's along the lines of Obelisk of Urd/Door of Destinies. It could also be along the lines of Volrath's Laboratory.

September 14, 2017 8:08 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #26

the way i understand it is its only being sought after because its one of a kind and thus valuable. it might have some kind of mana producing ability though. but like someone suggested, whatever it is, if it stops planeswalkers from walking, chances are Bolas is somehow involved with whatever groups are looking for it. i.e. "whoever delivers it to me i will give them whatever they want."

September 15, 2017 2:19 a.m.

pizzagod13 says... #27

I was thinking that maybe Bolas wants it destroyed, since its power could be used to trap him in a plane.

September 16, 2017 2:57 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #28

He would probably settle for it being under his sole control, or the control of one of his most trusted and powerful lieutenants.

September 16, 2017 3:18 p.m.

pizzagod13 says... #29

The issue with retrieving the artifact is that whoever grabs it still can't leave Ixalan

September 16, 2017 8:47 p.m.

RicketyEng says... #30

We don't know that.

September 16, 2017 11:14 p.m.

shinobigarth says... #31

assuming there's no "off switch" for this planeswalk canceling item, what about the Planar Bridge that Tezz got from Kaladesh? that's still a thing right? we all thought it was going to come into play in Kaladesh but perhaps this is the reason Bolas needed it.

September 17, 2017 12:47 a.m. Edited.

RazortoothMtg says... #32

I like shinobigarth's idea. Maybe he plans on using the Planar Bridge to transport it off of Ixalan. Seems like the most reasonable idea so far.
