In today's story, Lili gets her shot at Razaketh; but soon realizes that she's in way over her head

personal note forthcoming

Holy crap; that was a chilling story.

Liliana eating Razaketh?! Wtf...

My take: It's a great story; but the only drawback was how easily Razaketh went down. He was taken down too soon and too quickly

DarkLaw says... #5

That was a little underwhelming. The 3rd demon dying 1 story after appearing? Razaketh hardly fought back. I'd say spoilers but you should've read the story by now.

More than a little let down by Razaketh lore wise... But his card could have a control magic effect based on the story... Hopefully Raz pulls a Tasigur, weak as crap in the lore but has an extremely powerful card

Something tells me this isn't even the last we see of Razaketh. Like yeah, he had a gruesome death, but this is a plane where the dead come back to life automatically.

Also, Lilliana had to go full out to do what she did. Something tells me this is going to be a few powerful cards based on these events (specifically all events based on what happened).

If this is the last we see of Razaketh, I'm going to be really disappointed in the story team. If Bolas falls without killing one of the members of the Jacetice league, than I think I'm done with the lore. Good-guy invincibility does not a good story make.

He's probably not going to kill a Jacetice League member (God I wish he would kill all of them though) but I definitely think one will be incapacitated or forced to disappear cause of him. And AgentGreen I think he'd probably be an eternalize enabler or something to do with controlling creatures.

Yeah, Razaketh is currently definitely less epic than Grislebrand. But that doesn't mean his card will be lame, nor does it exclude the possibility of him returning in some form or fashion.

Dredge4life, dbpunk, I definitely saw more than a couple hints that the Gatewatch will be parting ways sooner rather than later. After the battle with Razaketh, Chandra and Nissa intimated that they support splitting up the team for safety's sake. That's just story evidence, totally neglecting MaRo's news about less Gatewatch on Monday. And, before we get concerned for Bolas's safety, don't forget that there's a 0% chance that WotC will kill off one of the Multiverse's top four villains (alongside Phyrexia, Eldrazi, and Yawgmoth...with a very close fifth of Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded, wink wink).

All that summed up means the Gatewatch will not come away unscathed, even if there's also a 0% chance WotC will kill off any of the 5 faces of Magic at this time. Like y'all mentioned, somebody's gonna get wrecked in HOU. However, if you're still concerned the good guys are winning too much, I'll always do block drafts of New Phyrexia with you to change the mood up(; nothing like Blind Zealot, Corrupted Conscience, and Dismember to brighten one's day.

Personally, though, I'm content in light of Monday's announcement by MaRo that WotC is aware that their lore is imperfect, and they're clearly listening to player feedback to improve as quickly as they can. With so many players reading excellent stories like this week's, I'm sure the trend with lore will be overall positive, even when there are some shortcomings.

The author said that the reason the demon went down so easily is because they apparently need to focus on bigger and badder things in the coming few stories.

Obviously the card related to Razaketh will have an ability related to taking control of things, as is HEAVILY implied in the story with it being his sole piece of character. Since black is not the color of traditional "gain control of x", which is red and blue, I suspect that Razaketh's ability will be similar to Gonti or NewMrakul. Unfortunately though I would love a better Mindslaver commander, the banning of NewMrakul has made this unlikely, so Razaketh's ability will be "exile x cards from target opponent's y, you may play them".

I mean, yeah there are bigger badder things (Nicol Bolas and the other three gods, which bolas "tucked away for later" in the opening of hours of revelation) but that doesn't necessarily mean Razaketh is done for good or should've disappeared in the course though of 2 stories. My guess is he's coming back. And that this isn't the set that breaks up the Gatewatch completely. Like they said that the Gatewatch changes aren't coming until 2018 with eggs. This is more likely the catalyst to their breakup.

More than likely, Ixalon will be where we see some major Gatewatch breakup. Specifically, I think either Gideon or Liliana are gonna be gone after Ixalon. In fact, Liliana may become a new villain and Gideon might die.

Also, there are B cards which take control. A few different ones.

Holy crap, this story reminded me of why Liliana is by far my favourite planeswalker. Razaketh was fighting a 5 v 1 where he had the element of surprise working against him, so its understandable that he died but he went down pretty quickly. I love the brutal death they gave him, but I would have liked to see his role on Amonkhet and how he factors in to the upcoming Hours a lot more. I would say that we haven't seen the last of him but considering his body was charred and eaten like overcooked pork chops, I'm having trouble imagining how they can bring him back. I liked how powerful Liliana is portrayed to be.

It's a plane where the dead comes back to life, and like all demons, he had a ton of power in life that could result in him coming back together last moment.

Torn apart and swallowed by zombie crocodiles? On-screen death? Razaketh isn't coming back. That was quite the story though. Id like to see Raz have a Merieke Ri Berit-like ability. Maybe something that bleeds you to make it more painful.

I think the Veil is going to have some role to play in Liliana going out on her own. How, I don't know, but a return to Dominaria seems like a good coming home story for Lili.

It pretty much explicitly said that the curse wouldn't revive Razaketh.

Razaketh's creature card should have an activated ability where you pay 8 mana or more to gain control of target player.

I am glad that Razaketh put up a better fight than did Kothophed and Griselbrand, but he still was defeated too quickly and easily for my liking, so I hope that Belzenlok, the final demon, is more impressive.

I'm not bothered by Razaketh's "quick" demise. It was a good, well written fight. Fight scenes can actually go on too long sometimes (cough cough Dragon Ball Z) but this one didn't drag it out unnecessarily. There was genuine struggle on both sides of the fight, and there were moments when either side was gaining the upper hand. My wife and I are both pleased with this story. Razaketh wasn't the main reason for the story to come to Amonkhet so it makes perfect sense that the writers have bigger fish to fry and they'll need the remaining allotted stories for all of that.

Ultimately, the combined efforts of five planeswalkers resulted in a very definitive victory. It just might be one of our last demonstrations of the Gatewatch successfully working as a team to overcome an obstacle. I would also note that all five planeswalkers played a valuable role in the fight (even Jace).
