This is a unique way to tell story of Ravnica. Rather than tell the story from the eyes of the protagonists; instead, tell the story of the lesser people of the Ravnican guilds. This is one of those stories

Super baby is the next Ravnica legendary obviously.

I liked the ending. It feels a bit like 1984.

I loved seeing Lazav show up, but I was confused at the ending though. Was that in the guy's head or was it for real?

This was a great way to start the third Ravnica block, and I am very happy that there shall be a series of one-shot stories before the main story commences.

I do like how this story was a one-shot, but I am disappointed that it was never revealed exactly what was so special about Merret's child that Lazav himself was interested in him.

On that subject, I see that not only does Lazav physically resemble emperor Palpatine from Star Wars, be behaves like him, as well, being a master manipulator.

Phaetion, I believe that that was deliberately ambiguous, befitting the nature of the Dimir guild.

Phaetion I am almost positive that really happened. Think about Lazav's ability: "Lazav, the Multifarious becomes a copy of target creature card in your graveyard with converted mana cost X." At the end, he did a fancy mind wipe thing to the whole family and became the person in the chair...

I liked this story. I’m of the same opinion as saj0219 that the person in the chair IS Lazav, he’s just appearing as the aunt because we can’t have peasants knowing the guildmaster is living with them.
I really want this to be a good standalone story and for the baby to be just a really powerful dimir agent or maybe the next guildmaster of the dimir, but I have a bad feeling that this child will SOMEHOW be pivotal in defeating bolas. Perhaps this event happens 20 years before bolas comes to ravnica or something so the child has time to grow up in the interim, I don’t know. I sincerely hope I’m wrong though.

DuTogira:

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Nicol Bolas has died. Eyewitnesses report that a baby was behind this most nefarious crime. The Gatewatch has been dispatched to investigate the scene and capture the infant fugitive. This is Multiverse News.

...I had to.

I'm trying to figure out how a) the minotaur never drank/sold the elixir of focus himself, if it was so deux-ex-machina amazing, and b) how Lazav has enough free time to be a full-time aunt/babysitter in addition to guildmaster...

Other than those two plot holes, I liked the writing style and the focus on the everyday denizens of Ravnica.

landofMordor I have no idea if this is even remotely accurate, but... maybe the elixir of focus is not a permanent effect and the minotaur has been taking just a few drops periodically to keep himself awesome?

saj0219 ya that would make sense with the way our protagonist got kicked and lost the focus. But still...who leaves that kind of thing laying around???

Someone who isn’t using enough of their elixir of focus to remember to keep it safe?

I thought that based off of the 'deal' Lazav made, he just implanted a dimir spy, not actually pretending to be the aunt himself. I really wish his card represented his mind-fogging ability.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the visiting aunt is secretly the Dimir tutor for the child and not Lazav himself.
