Yeah sorry if you clicked hoping for a official announcement. But a little fan banter is always fun.

What set/time period do you think would be most successful for a trilogy of high budget blockbusters?

My personal opinion would be judgement, torment and legions.

Urza was too long ago for all the new kiddies I think :(

Epochalyptik says... #2

I'm gonna move this to Lore because it's mostly about the story.

Zendikar would be pretty epic because of the environment and Eldrazi. Even before the Eldrazi, the place is dangerous and fantastic enough to make for a good setting.

GoldGhost012 says... #3

I would love to see a movie about how the Eldrazi were sealed away on Zendikar.

December 3, 2013 9:20 p.m.

woah sorry for my monstrous level of fail.

I meant to say "the onslaught block"

as in Onslaught, Legions and Scourge

while I think it would be really awesome, and I'm sure we've all thought about this, Hollywood would undoubtedly screw it up big time

i think ravnica would make a interesting movie space because it would allow for a lot of variety in the characters and places, as for the time and plot...... i would have to say the story of how the guilds were formed would be awesome. also the shards of alara would probably make a good setting too.

Honestly I don't think most of mtg's stories is best suited for a movie. Now a good series of hour long episodes might be better.

Besides the last attempt to get mtg even a hint into movies was pretty bad. A movie would also probably on a level of dragonball or avatar, the last air bender, especially when there isn't really ever a point in mtg that allows non mtg players to catch up.

I think the Kamigawa storyline would be interesting to see done. Although i would much rather other sets, I feel that this would make the best movie, plenty or roles with all the legendary creatures, and an interesting enough plot.

December 3, 2013 11:33 p.m.

Krayhaft says... #9

A movie set in Ravnica or Innistrad would be really rad. There was a lot of worldbuilding put into those two settings, there's so much material for a movie.

If it were a tv series though, Urza's war against Yawgmoth and Phyrexia would be super cool. A clear beginning and ending, and plenty of material for episodes in between.

December 4, 2013 12:13 a.m.

I agree with HarbingerJK. Hollywood would indeed screw it over. I'd really hate to see someone fuck up their role as a Planeswalker (I'll rage if they got the actress for Chandra wrong) or some crappy animation for the creatures(The animation doesn't necessarily need to be realistic, just enough to make it look like the art in the cards. ). I don't particularly like the way the Yu-Gi-Oh! series put these kind of guys in control of cards which they can summon that if they wanted to, can literally destroy their opponents in a flash. I really wouldn't want it portrayed that way, it wouldn't do the game good if it looked that MTG copied off some key elements of Yu-Gi-Oh!. I'd suggest hiring Alan Silvestri for this movie's soundtrack.

how has no one mentioned Alara and how epic that would be

December 4, 2013 6:03 p.m.

I feel in terms of successful and accessible movies zendikar would be the safest bet, dragons elves and vampires are very excessible. As well as the cast of all star planes walkers. There's no question alara would be awesome but how do you turn that into a movie?

December 4, 2013 6:19 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #13

There was a movie once about two worlds closely joined, like within each other's atmospheres. I'm not sure who directed that one or made the art for it, but I believe the people who made that movie would do an Alara one easily.

December 4, 2013 7:35 p.m.

zendikar and maybe scars of mirrodin could be cool as "block"busters

Is it just me, or would anyone else like to see a unique plane for an MTG movie? I'd love to see Ajani, Jace, Liliana, Chandra, and Garruk run wild on a new plane fighting Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker or some version of Phyrexia.

December 4, 2013 9:02 p.m.

MaliciousMac says... #19

Phyrexia would be sick, but like said above, I'd like to a see new plane with the 5 main planeswalkers and their feuds/alliances. Something that a non-MTG player could watch, and understand.

December 5, 2013 2:59 p.m.

Aerokid says... #20

JWiley129 that's something I could get behind. As long as they don't hand it to Michael Motherf***ing Bay. He'd probably add Phyrexian transformers that explode for no reason or something stupid like that.

I'd vote for the guys behind the Gamers movies to work on it :D maybe not groundshaking quality, but I've enjoyed the...geekness, of their movies, and the actors.

December 5, 2013 11:52 p.m.

It's be pretty sweet to see a series from Dominara to Theros. But how to put 20 years of Magic into a TV series?

On another note, I concur that Zendikar would be a badass setting for a trio of films. I nominate Peter Jackson.

December 6, 2013 3:29 a.m.

TransMarx says... #23

I would like to see Jeska, Warrior Adept , Kamahl, Pit Fighter , and Balthor the Stout 's story line. how awesome would it be to see Akroma, Angel of Wrath and Phage the Untouchable battle it out! Also there is a common goal to obtain the power of Mirari , which can be very much like how Tolkien made it a struggle for Frodo to carry the ring! I feel most of Magic the Gatherings plot lines are very complex and would be a little to hard to show via film! I agree the Uzra Cycle is to long but would be a great as hour long webisodes!

Just no Ravinica!

December 6, 2013 5 p.m.

TransMarx says... #24

Peter Jackson would be amazing to do these films! Zendikar wouldn't be that bad of a series!

I feel Theros would be just a Xena warrior princess ripoff and equally as bad! I would hate to see Elspeth played so badly! haha

December 6, 2013 5:04 p.m.

I cannot believe no one has said Ice Age. So desolate and cold.... I love the backdrop of snow mixed with the dangers of casting.

December 7, 2013 3:55 p.m.

calvinglass1 says... #26

Alara would be really cool! i love that storyline. Also i guess Ravnica

December 9, 2013 4:24 p.m.

Aerokid says... #27

I just got into the MTG books and have the Brother's War Trilogy down, working on Arena at the moment. I feel like Arena would translate really well to the screen, plus it's infinitely better written than any of the Urza books I've read.

December 9, 2013 5:12 p.m.

ravnica movie could never happen, there's way too much stuff to explain/going on to make it watchable for the standard person.

December 9, 2013 6:56 p.m.

Stein_ says... #29

I have been actually jotting down notes to make a cool movie, because it could be done, and done well. With all the awesome CGI we have today, and awesome movies like Thor, etc...there is alot that could be done to make the multiverse, the characters, beasts, all of it. It would be dope. However, who remembers the DBZ real people movie. awful.

December 9, 2013 7:36 p.m.

Stein_ says... #30

I also want Bill Nighy as Nicol Bolas.

December 9, 2013 7:37 p.m.

also wizards of the coast is owned by Hasbro (if I remember correctly) who also owns transformers YOu MAY REMEMbEr A FEw MOVIeS FROM THAT SERIES

December 9, 2013 7:38 p.m.

Stein_ says... #32

or even an animated series.

December 9, 2013 7:41 p.m.

Sam_I_am says... #33

I think that the Dark/IceAge/Alliances books are pretty good, and they would translate well into movies.

They might need to do Brother's War(which was also very good) first to set up for them.

It's gotta be Avacyn. I don't even like Avacyn, but it's gotta be Avacyn.

December 10, 2013 5:41 p.m.

Lol what Szadeck avacyn restored was literally the worst set ever.

December 10, 2013 8:15 p.m.

Szadeck says... #37

I said I didn't like it, but the angels vs demons would look great on screen.

December 11, 2013 5:43 a.m.

Odyssey block or Invasion Block is the way to go IMO. I'd make one movie for a whole block.

Invasion's story is similar to Lord of the Rings and would be an easy sell.

Odyssey's story follows Kamahl, Pit Fighter , one of the greatest MTG characters ever. It follows the personal struggles and growth of a typical anti-hero. Something similar to Conan, Scorpion King, and Van Hellsing. Potential squeal with the Onslaught Block.

Mazzuno says... #42

We're gonna have to sacrifice quality and settle on a syfy series mentality if this would ever happen. Only way it would get past even the budget phase.

December 17, 2013 8:16 a.m.

Mazzuno even with Hasbro behind it?

December 17, 2013 6 p.m.

Mazzuno says... #44

AnagonLordofSnakes if we want it to stay like magic the gathering is and not like battleships or transformers became then yea. No way they'lll throw that much of a budget into a niche audience as ours.

December 17, 2013 11:58 p.m.

@sonicizslow that movie was horrible

December 19, 2013 5:19 p.m.

gwankovera says... #47

I think the original mirrodin block might be an interesting movie. reasons why, first a completely different look given for fantasy races, as they all have metal grafted to them. second reason, there is minimal planeswalkers involved. third reason i think it might make a good movie, is the way it the story starts with a character who has little world experience and grows in the story, and learning about the world as she goes. the second and third books focus on her gathering an army to fight the evil overlord of the plane, and ends with her interacting with a planeswalker.

then it can later be put into two trilogies, to include the mirrodin war and the rise of phyrexia.

December 19, 2013 7:13 p.m.

2knighttokens says... #48

I think that if MTG made a movie, it would follow an entirely new planeswalker and story. While I'm not such a huge fan of Wizards' emphasis on planeswalking, I think that they could create a pretty interesting storyline.

December 20, 2013 9:58 p.m.

I'd say go with either Zendikar, Alara or Ravnica blocks. All three are awesome and definitely had some great lore (Alara with the birth of Bolas as a planeswalker, Zendikar because of the Eldrazi and our hated planeswalker, JTMS, and Ravnica because...well, does it really need an explanation?).

December 21, 2013 3:16 a.m.

brownkidd says... #50

I'd totally be down for an hour-long Game of Thrones-esque series set on Ravnica. They could do something like American Horror story where every season features a different plot and set of characters so that we could get to see different planes.
