Bad timing seems to be a big thing with the Planeswalkers right now.

Well, it's not like Chandra said no. But I actually like the direction Chandra's character is going. She's attempting to prove that she's not Jaya, while at the same time trying to be a better Jaya. If she does show up in BFZ block, it will likely be the 2nd set.

Chandra is basically a Fremen from Dune in that first part.

She'll end up accompanying them, arriving in the nick of time, no doubt.

I wonder how many planeswalkers will be printed as cards in the upcoming Battle for Zendikar block. We have reason to expect at least some level of story involvement from the following planeswalkers:

  • Gideon: He'll be there certainly.

  • Jace: He's thrown in with Gideon, so yeah.

  • Kiora: She's got Thassa's bident. She has a declared intention to combat the Eldrazi.

  • Ugin: Designer of the hedrons. Has recognized that Zendikar needs help and has a sense of responsibility concerning the Eldrazi imprisonment.

  • Nahiri: Builder of the hedron system, whereabouts unknown. Deeply loyal to Zendikar. Perhaps she will appear if Sorin can locate and convince her to assist.

  • Sorin: His entire trip to Tarkir was about finding Ugin to secure assistance against the Eldrazi. I'm sure he will play some role.

  • Chandra: Reluctant now but certainly feels responsible. I expect her to make an appearance.

  • Garruk: In a hedron-induced, curse-stymying stasis on Zendikar, as per the events of the Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015 video game. Might still be out for the count but there's always that possibility that he will be affected by the block's events or even be involved somehow.

  • Ob Nixilis: Not currently a planeswalker but still on Zendikar. Recent story materials published by WotC indicate he is unleashed and active on Zendikar.

  • Nissa: Her whole goal (as per the post-Uncharted Realms re-vamped lore) is to save Zendikar from the Eldrazi (it used to be some weird thing about a quasi-racist Elf supremacy agenda; as per her Origin Story, we can see that's no longer the case -- she's horrified at the ethnic cleansing activities of Lorwyn's Elves). She will be involved.

  • Nicol Bolas: Seems to be pulling a lot of strings and has definitely been influencing Zendikari events in the past.

I don't expect we will see appearances from these other currently active planeswalkers:

  • Ashiok: We don't really know much about him.

  • Tibalt: Hopefully we won't see him again ever.

  • Tezzeret: Still on New Phyrexia, right?

  • Karn: Fighting on New Phyrexia.

  • Koth: Same as Karn.

  • Ajani: His campaign of iconoclasm on Theros seems to be his main gig for the moment.

  • Tamiyo: I don't think she's even had much of a story to begin with.

  • Dack: Forget what he's doing, but I don't think it has much to do with Zendikar. The cast for this story is already super crowded anyway.

  • Narset: Doing stuff on Tarkir I think. No indication that she knows or cares about Zendikar. Slight chance she may get involved via Sarkhan, though.

  • Sarkhan: He did play a significant role on Zendikar previously, this is true (what exactly is his status in that situation as per post-time travel from Fate Reforged? Was he ever on Zendikar in this new timeline?). He used hedron magic to revive Ugin. It's possible he might get involved, but now that he's free of Bolas I doubt it. He's enamored with his new Tarkir of dragons, and I doubt he'd leave it. Plus, he received no less than two cards last block already. I doubt we'll have three Standard-legal Sarkhan cards at once. He's already played his role, I think -- which was being involved in the Eldrazi's release, and subsequently getting Ugin back in the fight. I doubt he will be involved.

  • Liliana: Maybe there's a chance she'll get involved because of the possibility to score points with Jace. But recent Uncharted Realms entries have made her lack of interest in the matter clear. She seems a bit conflicted about it so maybe there's a chance she will show up to blast Eldrazi into corpses with her necromancy, but I really doubt it. The quasi-confirmed cast in the first list is already so huge.

  • Elspeth: Currently dead.

  • Xenagos: Dead, probably permanently.

  • Venser: Dead.

  • Domri: He's a Ravnica guy, and a very minor character. Basically no chance he will be involved.

  • Ral Zarek: Same as above, basically. He is an associate of Jace's, though.

Have I forgotten to account for anyone?

JakeHarlow Lily has been confirmed for next block.

That was pretty awesome. Good to see Chandra actually having a caring side.

Also is there a possibility Anowon will be coming back sometime in BFZ block? He was pretty pivotal in Chandra's storyline on Zendikar.

JakeHarlow - As far as Planeswalker cards are concerned, Maro said that the norm for the 2 set blocks is 3 planeswalkers in each large set and 2 in each small set. So they'll keep the total of 5 per block, but add one to each small set. Now that is the norm, but we'll have to see how this rolls out. They did say at SDCC that it is likely that planeswalkers will show up in the story but not have their own planeswalker cards.

CheeseBro, you'll have to find it, but search up the SDCC panel where they talked about which walkers were going to be in BfZ and which weren't.

JakeHarlow:

"Tibalt: Hopefully we won't see him again ever."

Why not? Tibalt has one of the most fascinating backstories among all planeswalkers, and I sure hope WotC expands on it someday, especially if we get another Innistrad block. The fact his planeswalker card is unplayable doesn't make him a bad character.

August 5, 2015 5:10 p.m.

square711 are you kidding? I run Tibs in every single red EDH deck I play and that thing is a powerhouse. I've won games just off him before.

square711 says... #13

canterlotguardian: Modern player with zero EDH knowledge here. Tibalt may be good in EDH, but in Modern he's pretty much the planeswalker equivalent of Chimney Imp. Or was that supposed to be a joke? (again, I know nothing about EDH. Not even all the rules)

August 5, 2015 7:10 p.m.

Well yeah in everything except EDH, Tibalt is kind of unplayable except in those rogue Legacy builds where you have Library of Leng to offset the "at random" part of his +1. Knowing me, I'd still try to play him anyways. I've got a soft spot for the guy, what can I say?
