New UR: Stirring from Slumber

Here is the new Uncharted Realms featuring Nahiri, the Lithomancer. She certainly has had a change of character from when we first saw her. And now she's going out to find Sorin it seems. Granted, this was 1000 years ago in-universe, but maybe this is where we find out what Sorin knows about Nahiri.

Very, very interesting. I think it was a great representation of how detached from the rest of reality the immortal pre-Mending Planeswalkers would get as they grew older.

So by this point, Ugin has already been attacked by Bolas and cocooned in a hedron by Sarkhan, so he couldn't answer Nahiri's call. But Sorin... Perhaps he was not as hedonistic as he is presently when Nahiri knew him. But when Nahiri meets him after this, she becomes disgusted with how he's changed and abandons him or something. Interesting.

The fact that Nahiri was unaware of the existence of vampires on Zendikar implies that Sorin came back after she retreated into Zendikar to sire the vampiric race. But... why?

We have no information that these vampires ARE Sorin's, but I'm already for the next installment.

Also, what are the odds we see a new Nahiri in BFZ? I'm thinking likely. It is odd that she'd be another planeswalker alongside Gideon. Maybe she color shifts to ? We need another Boros planeswalker since Ajani isn't red anymore.

In In the Teeth of Akoum, Zendikar vampires refer to Sorin as the Mortifier, which has some sort of significance to their culture. I haven't read the book and Sorin's MTG Salvation article is sketchy on what exactly what being the Mortifier means, but he is significant to them.

That would be an interesting shift. Hmmm.

So I guess what I should have said was that in between when Los Tres Amigos sealed the Eldrazi the first time and Nissa and Sorin's journey to the Eye of Ugin, Sorin returned to Zendikar and did something with the vampires there.

May 13, 2015 1:56 p.m.

It's kind of sad to think that she dedicated a large portion of her life to a cause that literally no one outside of Zendikar would ever recognize (aside from Sorin and Ugin).

Femme_Fatale, get over here!!

I would love to see more of Nahiri, even get a new card with her on it in Battle for Zendikar. Gideon gets his in Origins, so it's not unthinkable that she could get one in BFZ, right?

And are we to think that Nahiri has been searching for Sorin for 1000 years, or that they met in the interim and something happened between them? Too many questions, not enough answers.

asasinater13 says... #9

they definitely met in the interim, Sorin knows what's going on with her right now as he showed in his conversation with Ugin. They definitely had a falling out though.

Now the real question is if Nahiri gets pissed off at Sorin because he caused the vampires on Zendikar which in turn caused the Eldrazi to awaken, or if he did something far, far worse. And knowing Sorin, no doubt that he could have easily have done something far worse.

On one hand, I want to see a Nahiri planeswalker card... I'm going to assume that the Nahiri in the beginning would've been like Urza, Freyalise, and all the other Old 'Walkers, and Nahiri now is Post-Mending.

On the other hand, I really want to know about what happened in the thousand years between this story and now, and what potential falling out Sorin and Nahiri had. Though, if in BFZ, we get another couple... well, that'd be extremely bizarre between these two really.

Sorin apparently committed a large goof. Large enough to summon up vague feelings of guilt. It'll be interesting to see what this was. I'm also curious as to the genesis of the Zendikari vampires.

I actually have a weird sneaking suspicion that Sorin turned Nahiri into a Vampire.

GoldGhost012 says... #14

Could explain how she lived so long after the Mending and becoming mortal.

Femme_Fatale says... #15

And it's the only thing that I can think of that would cause Sorin to feel guilt, and make Nahiri completely ignore her plane.

May 15, 2015 5:23 p.m.

So Nahiri's a vampire now?

...

COOL!

GoldGhost012 says... #17

It's certainly a great headcanon to think about.

JakeHarlow says... #18

It's definitely possible. What would Sorin's motivation be? Turn Nahiri so she wouldn't die of old age as per post-mending status quo?

Femme_Fatale says... #19

Most likely. Either that or Vampiric Lust. Being Human demonstrated that quite well.

RussischerZar says... #20

Turning Nahiri into a vampire might have also shut off her lithomancy powers or even her Planeswalker spark... that could also be a source of pissed-off-ness.

JakeHarlow says... #21

Could be! Who knows? We sure haven't seen Nahiri abroad in the multiverse. No-one, in fact, seems to caught so much as a glimpse. She hasn't been going places. Unwilling or unable? I guess only Sorin could tell us.

One theory I saw was that he turned Nahiri into Avacyn. I kinda liked it, but I won't comment on credibility.

Femme_Fatale says... #23

Avacyn, Angel of Hope/Nahiri, the Lithomancer

Potential skin colour and hair colour relevance?

May 27, 2015 10:31 p.m.

asasinater13 says... #24

I assumed avacyn was already around when the eldrazi things were happening.

May 27, 2015 10:40 p.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #25

I don't think so. That UR was like, a couple of thousand years ago.

Ruffigan says... #26

If Sorin is responsible for the propagation of vampires on Zendikar it would be odd that they're defiling his only purpose there (keeping the Eldrazi contained). Nahiri also doesn't let them explain what exactly they were doing (One of them hissed. "You defile our-"). Easy enough to assume they've forgotten about Sorin and never experienced the devastation of the Eldrazi, but considering he is known among the vampires as "The Mortifier" the first point seems unlikely. The situation feels like a ruse, like they were baiting Nahiri out for some reason.

May 28, 2015 3:09 p.m. Edited.

Femme_Fatale says... #27

They have utterly no idea who Nahiri was at that time Ruffigan. If they knew the true intentions of the Eldrazi and didn't just worship them as gods, then they would know about who Nahiri was and what she could do, pre-mending era after-all. There's literally no plot evidence to suspect that it is a ruse. Nahiri doesn't let them explain because she knows what they were doing. They were trying to bring forth their eldrazi god through sacrifices, and they succeeded, a little, not knowing what the gods actually were.

May 28, 2015 11:07 p.m.

Ruffigan says... #28

I was implying a ruse on Sorin's part. The vampires were stationed right above their meeting point, Sorin didn't show up when she mind-poked him (if this was planned he wouldn't need to), and it would be odd for the vampires to be trying to awaken the Eldrazi if they knew Sorin's purpose was to contain them. But you're right, there's no evidence, I'm grasping at straws.

Another thing is the vampire the 'god' in the statue was grasping. The Kor statue featured Nahiri so presumably the vampire in this statue is also of some importance. While Sorin doesn't have spikes on his shoulders the people who crafted these statues have obviously taken some liberties with the designs.

Femme_Fatale says... #29

Could possibly be. We can never know for sure, but we all are assuming that it has to do with something more along a relationship theme due to just how Sorin reacted like a guilty puppy when Ugin confronted him.
