I'm doing some research but the answer varies: In what set do phyrexian cards first appear? That can mean mentioned in flavor text or in the name of the card

I wanna say they first appeared in the Urza block years ago, but don't hold me to that.

Phyrexia was mentioned all the way back in the first expansions; Antiquities and Arabian Nights. Cards started being named "phyrexian xxx" in Antiquities with Phyrexian Grimoire . If you count references to "yawgmoth" who is a major player in the storyline, Priest of Yawgmoth and Yawgmoth Demon were always around in antiquities as well. The Magic the gathering books are fun reads for anybody interested.

Could you give me a list or a link to the books?

Here's a wiki-link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Magic:_The_Gathering_novels) of all the magic books released. The first 10 books are just random stories about a specific card. After that, they started making expansions and stories behind the blocks. The book "the thran" is where the phyrexians and Yawgmoth make an appearance. The brothers' war is where Urza and Mishra become planeswalkers and build a storyline for several upcoming blocks. I enjoyed "Arena" and "brother's war" but haven't read anything written after 2005.

I think Phyrexian War Beast is one of the earliest Phyrexian cards, appearing in Alliances in June 1996, followed shortly after by the more well-known Phyrexian Dreadnought in Mirage, which came out in October of '96.

Since the brother's war in Antiquities was a direct result of phyrexian influence on Mishra, it can be assumed that Phyrexia itself existed in the lore at least at the same time or even earlier then Antiquities
