Planar Chaos and Karn

Lore forum

I've been reading over a fair bit of MtG Lore recently, and one thing that seems to keep coming up is the idea that Karn had lost his spark during the events of Time Spiral; hence why Venser sacrificed his Spark to purify the Artifact Planeswalker.

However, this turns up some confusion while I was reading the MTGSalvation's article on the Time Spiral block novels, which has this in its summary of the plot of Planar Chaos:

"Recognizing the corruption Karn tells Venser that he regrets that he will be unable to help them with the other rifts and proceeds to planeswalk randomly throughout the Blind Eternities in order to prevent anyone from following him."

Now, that's obviously not ironclad; it is a wiki page after all. But it suggests that Karn retained his Spark after closing the rift. Now, this doesn't really seem to change anything in particular about the later canon (Venser's Spark can still purify him if it wants to), but it has been bugging me.

So, do any of you lovely people happen to have access to the Planar Chaos novel? I'd be extremely appreciative if someone had the time to check it to see whether Karn retains his spark after closing the rift.

From what i remember reading they never said that he lost his spark or not. What did happen though is karn had to travel back in time to a point in which the tolarian rift was smaller and thus easier to close, which may have been small enough that it did not require the extinguishing of his spark.

I don't know anything about the Time Spiral lore, but Karn Liberated was a planeswalker during Scars, which I assume happened after that.

You would be correct in that assumption.

From what I recall, right after mending the Tolarian Rift and still in the past, he sensed something that distressed him enough to jump back to the present and flee Dominaria.

My presumption these days is that he felt the oil within him strengthen while among those past Phyrexians and then fled back to Mirrodin (I'd consider it my home too if I made the place) to deal with it before it could touch another plane.
