About a minute ago, The First Sliver was spoiled:
card:The First Sliver -
Legendary Creature - Sliver
Cascade
Sliver spells you cast have cascade.
7/7 (Power/Toughness)
Anyone know what this card is about? I don't know what this means if the Riptide experiments or whatever made them?
I don't know a ton about slivers.

cdkime While yes it is, for casual EDH, I think it is also going to be the most popular Sliver Commander, while Queen is still the best, because this will be able to chain each sliver you cast into more slivers, if you fill your entire deck with them. If you go for a more sliver-value plan, rather than all in, it can chain a sliver into a removal, card draw, or ramp spell, even a Ancestral Vision (or other cards in that cycle) can come out of a sliver ;)

So where has cascade appeared before? Conflux- an alara set. Just a coincidence? Maybe. But with Dregscape Sliver (the dregscape being another part of Alara- part of its Grixis shard) in the same set? Perhaps we have our plane of origin... or perhaps not.

However, none of the other 2 we see really match and Tempered Sliver is described as a callback to Slith Predator - sliths are mirrodin exclusive.

I don’t know that being a callback necessarily means that it’s from the same plane, Boza. Really, the only question I have now is whether Dregscape Sliver is canon...

I have a feeling cascade was chosen here for mechanical reasons rather than flavorful. Or, to be more precise, for the flavor of the keyword's mechanic, rather than the flavor of the keyword. It's the first Sliver, and it leads into/births more slivers. It's a way to go about the Sliver Queen motif while aligning more closely to Slivers' identity.

That is fair. Still though, Dregscape Sliver raises ques- ... oh wait. This set is set in the past!
So I was worried because I’m making a return to Alara set (which might turn into a block, who knows?). I was like “am I gonna have to include slivers??” No. They are, I’m assuming, either a thing of the past on Alara or aren’t significant enough to get more than one stray card.

We do not know very much about the origins of the Slivers. We know that they were discovered on a currently unnamed world and brought to Rath for experimentation.
We do know this is the single best Food Chain commander, seeing as you can use it cast through cascade every single card in your deck.
