Theros's creatures

i'm so sad there are no elves in Theros.... T_T instead we get hydras, merfolk, minotaur, centaurs, satyrs, and krakens. I WANT ELVES!!
Elves are traditionally a northern European/Scandinavian thing. The satyr's are probably their replacement for Theros, but we might see dryads like we did in Innistrad.
Also, you forgot gorgons.

Fixed the title for you.
Elves don't have a place in Greco-Roman mythos. They're a Germanic/Norse/Anglo-Saxon concept.
I hope WOTC doesn't use another tribe to replace Elves mechanically within Theros because there's no need for that. I'd like to see an emphasis on a new tribe with unique mechanics and flavor.
Oh, and Elves have been downplayed ever since ZEN block was completed. I think we'll see a resurgence within the next two sets (not counting Theros), but it's nice to take a break from the major tribes once in a while. Otherwise the game would get too generic.

Thanks epoch. Well that shows my ignorance for history and lore. Lol

Centaurs will also occupy green, so that'll work well combining with Selesnya's own centaurs. I wonder if Theros centaurs will do anything different/interesting mechanically however.
Does anyone think Minotaurs will be the Black/Red archetype? With the black Minotaurs in M14 and the red in Ravnica, and their description as marauders in Theros from what we've seen, it seems a possiblity (though Minotaurs also could go into white).
Oh lordy, I want to see a Gorgon lord. And in Black/Green like gorgons should be!

Minotaurs are traditionally red-aligned. I suspect some black will seep into it, but I don't know about white. It depends on the direction in which WOTC takes them. I could see logical ways to work them as either BR or RW.

Of course, we won't know yet. Hell, Minoaturs have historically being in blue as well, and we even had a blue one being printed in Modern times (Etherium-Horn Sorcerer ), so they're definitely a difficult tribe to pin down and could go any way really.
All I know is that there may never be a more fitting time to reprint Didgeridoo .
July 21, 2013 1:37 p.m.
Except that Didgeridoo 's are an australian instrument....
Perhaps the tribes in Theros will follow a similar structure that Innistrad's tribes had, where they occupied two allied color combinations.
Maybe instead they'll be enemy colored? I really like gorgons...
Theros is going to be more of a top-down designed block, like Innistrad was. But I think it's too soon to do a "classic tribes matter" type block, since we already had Innistrad.

@Krayhaft: Oh, I never said it would perfectly fit as a cad in Theros block; hell, not even that well. But still, do you foresee a Minotaur-prevalent block in the future bar this one? I highly doubt it.
Hehe, maybe a functional/renovated reprint of Didgeridoo ...
It's likely that tribes will fit two colours each (and concievably enemy too), but I think you may be right in saying that there won't be specifically tribal set. Innistrad arguably was, with cards like the Captain cycle or Rooftop Storm . Theros may just have the tribes banded together by colour alone rather than specific cards or playstyle, though I wouldn't rule it out entirely. Also, it would make more sense that way coming off the highly two-colour centric RTR block. Mixing tribal and guild is an odd proposition.

Merfolk are back and they look pretty Green-ish Blue.
Kiora Atua, anyone? We still have 2 unnamed Planeswalkers in the set aside from Elspeth 3.0...

The Wizard would like to see goblins get some justice
July 21, 2013 2:38 p.m.
Why, we learn it from the best resource gathering utility in the world.
@zandl, merfolk in Theros makes sense. There are analogues for merfolk in greek myths. Kiora Atua makes a whole lot of sense in Theros too. Her shtick is that she's a researcher/worshipper of leviathans and sea beasts (much like Tamiyo's obsession with moons). And greek mythology is teeming with giant sea creatures.
July 21, 2013 2:50 p.m.
Goblins are also highly unlikely, as they are another northern European idea.
Kiora Atua could show up, but she doesn't particularly fit the theme of the world. Then again, neither did Tamiyo.
There was a Magic panel at SDCC yesterday or Friday, and the web is full of info right now.

I would love to see a new warrior esc type like centurion or something
July 21, 2013 9:54 p.m.
I think wizards has a policy of not introducing too many unnecessary creature types. Centurions could be done with the "soldier" creature type.
That being said though, it'd be cool if "hero" was a subtype, much like like wizards did allies for zendikar block. Allies could even come back in Theros, since a lot of greek tales revolve around adventure.

or hero could be a ability kinda like grandur was E.X Baru, Fist of Krosa

I wish grandeur was more supported, Linessa, Zephyr Mage was one of my favorite future sight cards. I can't even make full use of her in edh...

I see a rise to a more "zoo" type of feel. Most of the creatures in Greco/Roman mythology are largely animal based. stuff like Nemean Lion, A practically invincible lion, and the more well known Cerberus, the 3 headed dog. Although WOTC can't rip off completely off of mythology, we might see something along the lines of this.

So I assume that the titans are coming to theros since sun titan's new art is greek
July 22, 2013 3:52 p.m.
Maybe Damia, Sage of Stone is from Theros!
Perhaps the best bug general gets another card?

I was reading somewhere that Dack Fayden take a spot as a Planeswalker in the Theros block.

"So I assume that the titans are coming to theros since sun titan's new art is greek"
I would assume not. Sun Titan 's new art is for the Theros themed Duel Decks coming out just before the set. And cards in Duel Decks don't always pop up in the following set release. Izzet vs. Golgari last year at this time had Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind at the helm of one of the decks, but we instead got the new Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius in Return to Ravnica.
Besides - it would be a cold day in hell before Wizards even considers reprinting the Titan cycle for Standard.
July 22, 2013 8:31 p.m.
Plus, titans in Greek Mythology are somewhat different from giants as seen in Magic.
July 22, 2013 8:35 p.m.
Agree with zandl. The core set titans cycle in standard warped the format in terms of card value. They simply did too much for one card.
That being said, I can easily see Sun Titan alone making his way into Theros, with revamped art and flavor text, since the titans cycle flavorwise very much fits in Theros.
Maybe instead it will be a five-card mythic cycle of CMC6 fatties to represent the monsters of Theros?

I think we'll see gods / avatars / titans, something like that for sure.
The spoiler art is full of them.

for those of you looking at creatures vs what colors are represented this is kind of what Im going off of
White- GriffinsBlue- Merfolk, Sphinx, KrakenGreen- Satyrs, Centaurs, HydrasRed- MinotaursBlack- Gorgons
But of course as WOTC has already confirmed this is not a tribal set.

I don't think we'll see the original Titans again, but maybe a more "stripped down version" of the tribe.
With as fast as Standard is though I'd like to see a lower CMC personally...
