We finally have our meeting of the minds as Jace and Ugin have a little chat. We also get a cameo from another of our legendary creatures to help Jace get to the Eye.

Oh man that was a cool read. The explanation of the Eldrazi being one being with the Titans being manifestations of its will and the brood as individual cells gave me chills.

I wonder if Ugin actually wants to imprison the Eldrazi to use against Bolas somehow in the future. I think that would be an j interesting plot twist. And I really wanna know what Bolas is up to, dammit!

"Jace wasn't sure if it was the longevity or the power, but he'd noticed that ancient Planeswalkers had something in common: They were all completely insane."

My favorite line in the entire thing.

Is anyone else scared that Jace might try and pull out the entire eldrazi to try and kill it permanently? I mean if Ulamog is just a hand, having the whole thing out is going to be terrifying.

xzzane - That would be a problem. Also, the hand metaphor can stretch a bit, but I'm not sure the size analogy would work. For all we know, Ulamog could just be a fingertip, or an eyelash. Or it could just as easily be a whole arm. But again, we have no way of knowing b/c the Eldrazi are by their very nature unknowable.

Sounds like eldritch monstrosities to me...Thank you H.P. Lovecraft for the base idea for Eldrazi.

I really hope Jace finds a way to turbocharge the hedron network and yank the entire being of Ulamog into physical reality, where he can be destroyed. That would be badass.

Ugin would be pissed, though, but I'm kind of with Jace on his analysis of ancient Planeswalkers -- that they're all nuts.

Uhm, janking the entirety of an Eldrazi titan onto Zendikar (or any other plane for that matter) might not be the best idea I think.

Otherwise cool read. :)

If the mere 'projection' of Ulamog can completely rip an entire plane asunder, just imagine what would happen if the actual Eldrazi body was pulled into a plane? It's not a good idea..

While I do like the idea of taking down the entire eldrazi titan at once, I'd agree that having the whole eldrazi body on Zendikar may be too much to handle. All of the spawn to sicons to processors and sires are all part of Ulamog. If there's even more of it out there (and were not sure how much more) Ulamog may actually be the size of an entire continent or more. That would immediately spell doom for Zendikar. Ugin's system, at least at the present time, seems well thought-out, though not something that's good for the very long term (because the the Eldrazi would be able to be re-released).

On a related note, there are spawn and drones of both Kozilek and Emrakul left on Zendikar. Does that mean those titans would also be pulled onto Zendikar if Jace enacted his plan? If they still have left part of themselves on Zendikar, can they be on other planes? What are they doing?

riddler89 says... #11

Maybe I'm interpreting this wrong, but using the hand metaphor Ugin made it sound like Ulamog, Kozilek, and Emrakul are all appendages of the same Eldrazi body. They are just perceived as different because the residents of Zendikar cannot fathom the scope of the whole Eldrazi.

October 14, 2015 2:55 p.m.

riddler89 I believe that's what he is alluding to. I vaguely remember hearing Wizards say something along the lines of, :the Eldrazi story will be revisited in the future."

I have a strong feeling that Battle for Zendikar is just a prequel to what it to come, and this "There is only one Eldrazi" idea supports this greatly.

We gettin' all Lovecraft up in here bitches.

It is confirmed here that there are three Eldrazi, not one.

October 14, 2015 4:04 p.m.

mpeach1 says... #14

Yea, that's what I took away from that. The physical form of Ulamog on Zendikar is just an appendage of Ulamog, there are still the other 2 titans.

I loved this article though. Although there wasn't too much excitement, it was an extremely relevant story. Not to mention it sets up the path for more and more interesting lore. Probably my favorite of the BFZ articles so far.

JakeHarlow says... #15

If they can't yank Ulamog bodily into a plane (or decide not to due to the peril that would pose), perhaps a team of Planeswalkers could head into the Blind Eternities and take the fight to him on his own turf.

October 14, 2015 4:24 p.m.

I'm pretty sure the whole point that Ugin was trying to get across in this UR is that, yes there are 3 Titans, but the Titans are also merely appendages of one supermassive entity; "The Eldrazi" ..at least that's what I gathered from the whole 'hand in the pond' analogy.

October 14, 2015 4:30 p.m.

swkelly89 says... #17

"You come to me speaking of the threat of Ulamog. But do not forget: They came as three." Ugin clearly says there are 3 eldrazi. i dont understand where this "one massive eldrazi" is coming from. if there is only one, why send 3 different appendages to one plane?

DrFunk27 says... #18

It sounds like we have some insane, new eldrazi still waiting in the next sets. I can't wait.

October 14, 2015 6:43 p.m.

tempest says... #19

it could easily be the Christian concept of 3 in 1. the whole trinity thing.

and yeah, it does sound like there's going to be another zendikar story after this. unless zendikar's destroyed, which doesn't seem likely considering the name of the next set (oath of the gatewatch) or the eldrazi are completely destroyed, which, gathering from the UR articles thus far, is basically impossible but then again, gideon, nissa, jace, chandra, kiora, ugin, sorin, and nahiri are all fighting for zendikar one way or another but also, against the eldrazi, bolas, his pawns, and ob nixilis... the possibilities are endless

regarding another earlier post, i don't think the planeswalkers can stay in the BE, only travel through it between planes. i could be wrong though

Great read although Jace doesnt seem to fully grasp that if Ulamog is simply an appendage then pulling out the entire being into a truly physical manifestation could be catastrophic. We all saw what happened when the Titans rose and washed over the land but I mean hey, they were really only the fingers of a far more powerful and menacing being so whats the worst that can happen haha

Ruffigan says... #21

With what we know from the fat pack brochure (Big Daddy Ob Nixilis ruins the hedrons and releases Ulamog) and the next set's name and expansion symbol (bears resemblence to Kozilek) I'm thinking they try Ugin's idea, Ob Nixilis causes it to backfire, and Ulamog retreats to the Blind Eternities and leaves some sort of portal to the Blind Eternities open in its wake. The "Oath" is them swearing to Ugin to guard that portal for some reason (Eldrazi coming back, Bolas appearing, etc.) while he, Sorin, and Nahiri attempt to build a better prison.

October 14, 2015 8:42 p.m.

Ruffigan if this means they're going to kill off Ob Nix come next set, I will fucking riot.

October 16, 2015 12:34 p.m.

canterlotguardian I doubt they would do that right after he regained his Spark.

CuteSnail says... #24

That's the plot twist.

October 16, 2015 12:40 p.m.

I think the plot twist is more likely to be Nicol Bolas is trying to save the multiverse.

Spoilers: Elspeth was the spawn of Satan and Heliod did us a favor.

October 16, 2015 12:53 p.m.

I was being completely serious with the Bolas thing. I truly think he knows something everyone else doesn't and is working to save the multiverse. I don't think he's a good guy; I think it's more of a selfish 'I don't want the world to end', type of thing.

October 16, 2015 12:57 p.m.

CuteSnail says... #28

If anything he'd save the world that that there's something left for him to rule.

October 16, 2015 1:01 p.m.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. As for how the Eldrazi fit into all of it? I have a theory... but it's kind of out there.

October 16, 2015 1:35 p.m.

Ruffigan says... #30

Maybe Bolas thinks the key to getting his pre-mending powers back lies in the Blind Eternities?

October 16, 2015 1:45 p.m.

Ruffigan says... #31

I remember reading (not sure where) that Bolas wanted to see who would answer the call when the Eldrazi were released. He believes Ugin is dead, and he is aware of the hedrons (since he studied the Eye of Ugin in depth and some knowledge was neccesary to trick Jace, Chandra, and Sarkhan into unlocking it) but not necessarily how they work, but he does know that they absorb and contain immense power. It doesn't seem likely that Nahiri is going to show up, and Ugin told Sorin not to come back without her so he won't learn about him either. However, I think Ob Nixilis is going to catch Nicol's eye when he absorbs the power from the Aligned Hedron Network, demonstrating mastery of hedrons.

So, baseless theory time. This makes me think he wants the Eldrazi released so he can capture one for himself and use it kind of like a battery, using Ob Nixilis' (or Nahiri, if he can persuade/mind control her) knowledge of the hedrons to leech its power into himself.

October 16, 2015 2:27 p.m.

Ruffigan I feel like that's plausible that Bolas would see Ob as a potential ally. Though I think Bolas' orchestrated release of the Eldrazi has a different goal. I think he's going to inadvertently use them as a weapon of sorts, you know? They're too powerful for him to outright control, but he could coerce/lure them where he wants them.
