Welp, that sucked for Kiora. And poor Lorthos...

Maltanis says... #4

That was awesome. I'm hoping we now see a Kiora whose a little more level headed and less rash. She seemed very brash and vain for a walker.

Yeah, exactly my thoughts. Talking about a "lesson in humility" ... :P

Wow, I actually thought Lorthos would do something. Lame.

Rest in pieces, Lorthos

I am so sad. What the hell are we gonna do? I mean if you go by just the story, not the cards, it should be impossible for the Walkers to win. Ever. Ever. Maybe against Ulamog sure, but Kozilek?

I swear to god if Elspeth comes back with Godsend and slays Kozilek I will be done. That would be such a cheap cop-out. I don't want to see her until a return to Theros. Really if the walkers are able to beat Kozilek on Zendikar at all it'll feel cheap.

If Kozilek is defeated or stopped on Zendikar it would have to be because Ob Nixilis Reignited does something stupid or is tricked by Walkers and ends up being pulled into the space on Kozilek's body where his "mind" would be (the head area). There would be some sort of struggle where Ob is trying to supplant his intellect, logic, reasoning, and will into Kozilek while Kozilek is trying to shred appart Ob Nixilis' reasoning and conciousness.

Meanwhile the Walkers could then trap, ensnare, or bind Kozilek long enough for Ugin and other forces to show up and rebuild Kozilek's prison. This leaves both Ob-Nix and Kozilek imprissoned and as a bonus if they ever break out (remember Ob is inside Kozilek in this iteration) we won't know if Ob was successfull in maintaining sentience in Kozilek with a rational mind. If so Ob Nixilis / Kozilek would have knowledge of hedrons and could possibly escape. If Ob fails to have sentience but Kozilek somehow absorbs the spark then Kozilek might be able to Planeswalk out...

What I DONT want to see is one of the "good" walkers sacrificing themselves. I doubt their puny sparks can fell Kozilek. We've already had some cases that amount to "Planeswalker gave up their life/spark to save the day" and I don't want that to be an easy plot device that's repeated over and over. At least spice it up by having Ob do it if it's done I say.

I just don't want Lorthos to be dead. He's too adorable to die.

Phaetion says... #10

kengiczar: Elspeth is trapped in the Underworld. She can't planeswalk out. Ugin and Chandra are probably our best bets for the Deus Ex Machina.

Don't forget that Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and Nahiri, the Lithomancer are both mysteriously absent from this battle and that the next block takes place on Innistrad which is Sorin's home plane.. Shadows Over Innistrad could refer to the Eldrazi titans and/or a new hedron network being built on that plane.. either way, I am curious to see how this all plays out

December 9, 2015 1:43 p.m.

I'm just hoping Zendikar will die and become the equivalent of a black hole. Kozilek seems capable of that.

December 9, 2015 3:19 p.m.

If that was what the two LESSER titans can accomplish...

Well, at least Kiora's going to be quiet for a little while now. I can't stand her. x)

Dem feels for Lorthos... But hell, what can a 8/8 do against a 10/10 and a 12/12?

Panda213 that'd be quite a good delevopment indeed! However, I think that isn't going to be the first issue Innistrad will be actually facing.

C'mon Chandra, my dear waifu, I know you can bring 'em down to ashes!

December 9, 2015 5:10 p.m.

elpokitolama The 8/8 can band with a 4/4.

I am so displeased that Lorthos died; he really did not have enough time to shine in the story, in my mind. Also, I do hope that Kiora survives, and, if she does, she becomes less arrogant and brash and more calm and contemplative, since much of her behavior recently has seemed much more red or red/green than blue/green.

I wonder what shall happen to Thassa's bident, if Kiora cannot recover it? Will someone else find it, or shall it remain in the ocean and have unusual effects on the Zendikarian ecosystem?

December 9, 2015 8:33 p.m.

mande says... #17

Even though he died I still am hoping for a GU Lorthos card

December 9, 2015 8:48 p.m.

mande says... #18

I figured it would be convenient, since we still need a UG legend this block. And since he collaborated with Kiora, I figured why not.

Femme_Fatale says... #19

I honestly wish Kiora gets killed off. She's an irritating character and we haven't gotten a high profile planeswalker get officially killed off since Scars ... that I know of.

December 10, 2015 3:02 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #20

Not official, she can still technically come back through lore shenanigans.

December 10, 2015 3:43 a.m.

Maltanis says... #21

I don't see them killing Kiora, the way the article ended leaves it open and is probably a sign of that.

December 10, 2015 4:41 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #22

Even if she wasn't killed in this one, there might be a chance of that in the future.

The Oath of the Gatewatch pictures only show Chandra, Nissa, Jace and Chad. It could just mean that Kiora is not interested in that kind of stuff but it could also mean that she doesn't survive.

December 10, 2015 5:15 a.m.

Maltanis says... #23

Kiora needs to re-evaluate everything she knows at this point. She was a new character, so I highly doubt WotC are going to just bump her off after bringing her in from DotP.
The "Oath" I predict being the main group of PW's agreeing to fight the Eldrazi across the multiverse, spending their time to stop this threat. I mean the Eldrazi have the potential to wreck everything.

Kiora was only interested in saving Zendikar and mimicking the hero's stories of Zendikars past. If the Eldrazi don't stick to Zendikar, then she will be busy trying to help people there I imagine.

December 10, 2015 5:41 a.m.

RussischerZar says... #24

Also a possibility.

December 10, 2015 5:43 a.m.

Femme_Fatale noooo! I love Kiora! She's feisty.

RIP Lorthos.

Rayenous says... #27

So... you do realize Lorthos isn't dead, right?

The story took special note of pointing out that Kiora did not 'Call' Lorthos, but rather she 'Summoned' him.

The difference being that 'Summoning' involves the creation of a faux entity based on the concept of that creature, which is pulled from the ther. - This was a copy of Lorthos, not Lorthos himself.

December 14, 2015 7:18 p.m.

mande says... #28

I think that's a reach, I'm pretty sure summon is a synonym for call.

December 14, 2015 8:56 p.m.

Rayenous says... #29

No. Summon and Call are very different things in mtg Lore.

If 'Summoning' a creature were to call forth the actual creature, then any Plane could/would become populated by any race that a Planeswalker wanted to bring there.

Sarkhan could have simply summoned Dragons to Tarkir... no need Planeswalk all over the Multiverse in search of them, or to travel back in time (though that would have happened due to Ugin's death).

Gideon could simply Planwswalk away and then summon the residence of Zendikar to save them (Though Nissa would be devastated as the living Soul of Zendikar itself would be lost.)

The list goes on...

In mtg Lore, Summoning = 'a controlled copy of the creature' - Since the author made specific note of the difference, I can only surmise that the reason was to show how Kozilek could Annihilate Lorthos... without actually killing Lorthos.

December 15, 2015 2:13 p.m.

idk Kiora seemed especially distraught to see lorthos killed, in fact she said up said something to the effect of "I just got one of zendikar's grandest and oldest beings killed" which is an odd statement to make if the real lorthos is still chilling off the coast of murasa or whatever

I'm pretty sure the distinction that the story pointed out was calling= "I contacted Lorthos and he's traveling on his way here" vs. summoned= "I magically brought lorthos to this place right now"

December 15, 2015 5:46 p.m.

RussischerZar says... #31

Well in the Theros story, Elspeth summons some unnamed soldiers to fight Polukranos and it is very much stated that those were some figments of real soldiers instead of actual ones. Might be a "tokens" vs "cards" thing.

December 15, 2015 8:57 p.m.

And that's the game, ladies and gentlemen. We just saw the first ever Lorthos token.

December 15, 2015 9 p.m.

RussischerZar says... #33

Yeah, no.

Crush of Tentacles does make an 8/8 token though, maybe that's secretly Lorthos, the Tidemaker?

December 15, 2015 9:05 p.m.

doubtful, koira master of the depths makes three generic 8/8's as her ultimate.

I figure that all these octopi are 8/8's because that's the limit on the size they can grow on zendikar before the square-cube law renders it impossible for them to move and hunt. Lorthos is unique in that he is old enough and thus, smart enough to warp the tides to his whim, either by virtue of his sheer enormity or some kind of inherent magic, hence why he needs you to provide him mana to do his thing on the card.

December 16, 2015 11:57 a.m.

xavrr says... #35

Lorthos, the Tidemaker is gone.

What else is there to play magic for?..
