This week; the spotlight focuses on two planeswalkers; one who cares nothing about the plane and one who wants to save it; as his Oath dictates - but that Oath could lead to the death of a planeswalker

Holy crap, what a good story. If only we didn't have Anguished Unmaking to spoil the story :P

I don't want Tamiyo to die, we need a new one in the next set. Im ok if Jace dies...
May 11, 2016 11:31 a.m.
Well, we already knew what's going to happen next: Sorin intervenes in Deus Ex Machina style and says "DIE, B****!" while feeling sad that he had to do it for more reasons than one (ala Anguished Unmaking).
That aside, I found Tamiyo pretty bad ass: Combat through scroll magic, and having the audacity to put Jace in his place. I wish she was WotC's main planeswalker as opposed to someone that Tamiyo called arrogant.

Phaetion i remember a rumor from around origins stating that they were going to go with a different blue walker as the poster child of mtg because jace had kind of run his course with the storytelling. I'm with you. Tamiyo as the main blue walker would be awesome

I was kind of expecting the battle to be a little more lopsided.
So is anyone else excited about the fact that Tamiyo has a scroll of Serra's Realm that allows her to recreate the Cataclysm? Wow!
May 11, 2016 11:50 a.m.
GoldGhost012: I saw that too. I wonder what the other two scrolls are.
Talking about scrolls, I see new design space: What if instead of ordinary spells, why not spells directly from scrolls as shown here?

"Tamiyo's smile disappeared. 'You know nothing, Jace.' "
Half life three confirmed?
May 11, 2016 12:29 p.m.
Phaetion - How would you specify that a spell is a "scroll spell" mechanically?
May 11, 2016 12:30 p.m.
"You know nothing, Jace" sounds more like The Winds of Winter confirmed 2016.
May 11, 2016 12:33 p.m.
VampireArmy says... #12
They've done similar things before in the form of enchantments. Hell even soi has them. I suppose a scoll would just be an artifact version of those.
May 11, 2016 12:36 p.m.
Jace Snow... Eldritch Moon = snow lands confirmed.
On a more serious note, I hope Jace dies horribly in the next set. Tamiyo FTW.

I doubt Jace will get whacked in the next set. I think WoTC is pretty much set on the main heroes of the world.
We do know that at some point Sorin will come in and save him; as you can see him and Tamiyo (her supporting him after he got his ass beat hard). The actions of Sorin (through Anguished Unmaking) will likely lead into the events of Eldritch Moon and the plane on the verge of destruction; and Tamiyo knows this; Avaycn being the checks and balance of the plane
May 11, 2016 12:48 p.m.
So effectively, here's the Shadows over Innistrad block's story as I understand it:
- Nahiri is super pissed at Sorin and tries to unleash something massive on Innistrad
- Avacyn performs her function and holds it back, but doing so drives her insane.
- Sorin is forced to kill Avacyn, and then says "Oh shit" as something worse descends upon his world now that Avacyn isn't around to restrain it (enter Eldritch Moon)

Wait so is Jace basically dead, or is Sorin going to jump in and "unmake" avacyn

JANKYARD_DOG says... #18
In the playmat art of Anguished unmaking, Jace is there with Tamiyo witness to the end of Avacyn...so unfortunately it seems he lives on as MTG's poster boy.

Here's a good question
Where the hell is Arlin? We only saw her once and that was it

It was very nice to learn more of Tamiyo's backstory and have her be developed as a character in this article. So, she has visited Mirrodin, which makes sense, since she has a fondness for moons, and Mirrodin has five of them; did she visit the plane before or after Phyrexia conquered the plane? Most likely before, I imagine, since she did not mention Phyrexia, at all, and she left alive and intact. The most interest revelation of this story is that she has a scroll from Serra's realm, implying that she is very old, indeed, or at least has visited many locations across the multiverse. I do look forward to seeing her be given more focus in the future; could her presence possibly be leading to a return to Kamigawa in the future?
The situation does look grim for Jace, but I suspect that WotC is not planning to kill their poster boy at any time soon. However, given that Mark Rosewater clearly stated that Jace would not be invovled in the next block, I have hope for Tamiyo being the new representative planeswalker for blue in the near future, at least for a short while.
AgentGreen, I am wondering that, as well, but I am wondering even more where Bruna, Gisela, and Sigarda have been since they were last seen.

I hope that we get a new Bruna and Gislea in the next set.
May 11, 2016 3:35 p.m.
DemonDragonJ - What she has is a scroll with a story about Serra's Realm. It does not need to be from it, but from survivors. Now it could also be that she stumbled upon that story while traveling on Dominaria, and she's not as old as someone like Karn. Either way, how she got that scroll would be an interesting story in-and-of-itself.
It's also a fair assumption that she visited Mirrodin pre-New Phyrexia. I'm sure they would've mentioned that part of the story in this week's installment.

Also, I forgot to mention that I really liked Tamiyo's comment of "you know nothing, Jace;" that was unquestionably a reference to A Song of Ice and Fire, and a very nice one, at that.
May 11, 2016 3:45 p.m.
ItchiUchiha117 says... #24
Well, it didn't have to be a reference to A Song of Fire and Ice, but it seems likely to be one. Also, Mirrodin had five suns, not five moons.
This storyline is getting me jumpy for it to conclude. Not because I don't like it, but because I'm not much one for reading one story over the course of months. Makes my skin itch waiting for everything to end so I can binge read everything (with most of them being reread).

Why Sorin, why, couldn't you have at least waited until Avacyn finished Jace off to kill her?
May 11, 2016 5:28 p.m.
Oof, the Jace hate is real. I'm not quite sure I understand why.

I support Zombie Jace, that way Wizards keeps their Jace, and fans get the joy of his death!

zephramtripp,
They're tabi and zori, but yeah.
Back to Ninja School for you! :-)

@Nemesis Jace has been reused over and over again as a main character, although he has not developed at all through direct and indirect characterization. Jace became the Living Guildpact on Ravnica, which is a HUGE deal and responsibility. Then, Jace blew it off to become one of the Gatewatch and now is a detective on Innistrad. For a crappy character, they use him too much. I swear when there is a Return to Ravnica 2, it will basically be Ravnica destroyed by Guilds fighting because Jace wasn't there for his job.

bennybubbles says... #32
Jace was a protagonist in Zendikar and Return to Ravnica blocks and now BFZ and Shadows, correct? How is that reusing over and over again, it seems like a good amount. And he has had a small amount of development because his past is so fractured that he doesn't even know much about himself. People keep saying that he is overused and a poor character, but I am yet to see any actual evidence regarding that. No one complains that Iron Man is overused in the MCU or that Wolverine is overused in the X-Men.

MagicalHacker says... #33
I think it's because he has turned into a Tom Cruise character, where he is the only person that is competent enough to save the day. That's never a good way to tell a story.

Homura_Akemi says... #34
@bennybubbles don't forget Origins. I would have rather had a Tamiyo origin instead of Jace.
May 12, 2016 7:24 a.m.
An interesting perspective of Tamiyo's abilities is that she can, through stories, recreated items/event of other Planes. Even ones which no longer exist.
With the end of Core Sets, there is a hole in Wizards ability to re-print cards that had a story attached to them, unless they revisit the Plane.
- Example: Serum Visions could only be reprinted in a Standard legal block if the story line went to Mirrodin... and Inquisition of Kozilek could only be reprinted when/if Kozilek (now dead) is around.
With her ability, she could be in a situation where it would be useful to know the future... they could have her tell the tale of the Blinkmoth Nexus, and their over hunting, and suddenly have access to Serum Visions. - She could tell the tale of powerful titans that could traverse the Planes, and suddenly have the ability to impose the Inquisition of Kozilek on others.
An interesting way to make any card ever printed available to any block.
It is also possible that her ability of "creating what is needed when it's needed", could allow her to have a 'Wish' ability as one of her PW abilities... allowing her to 'pull' cards from your sideboard. - Very flavourful!

So... Scroll Rack reprint coming?
:)
LOL... K, maybe not... but it would make Counterbalance a powerful modern deck.

I would hardly count origins as a main protagonist role, considering he shared it equally with 4 other protagonists, but your point stands.

At this point, I doubt anything will happen to Jace. Our best hope would be Nahiri, Gisa, or Emrakul killing Jace. Come on Nahiri! Gisa! Emrakul! Anyone! Just kill Jace!
May 12, 2016 2:52 p.m.
I just wonder what the 2 other Iron scrolls are. Wonder how planes got wrecked do far. Also, these scrolls are not her's, do so did she get them from? And hoots old is tamiyo?

DemonDragonJ says... #42
How does Jace know of the Soratami? Has he visited Kamigawa in the past? Can all Soratami fly, or is that ability unique to Tamiyo?
The fact that Tamiyo was aware that Jace had erased his own memories has me hoping that they shall be restored at some point; is it possible that she might be able to restore them, or at least inform Jace of them being erased?
May 13, 2016 1:35 p.m.
MagicalHacker says... #43
I doubt have erased his memory of erasing his own memory. Seems to me that it would make him stressed/worried if he didn't know how his memory was erased or who erased it. At least, that would be the smart thing to do.
