Will it Be Necessary to Read the New Novel?

WotC stopped printing Magic: the Gathering novels several years ago, because they were not selling well, and have instead been telling the story in articles on their website since that time.

However, they soon shall be publishing a new novel about the current story on Ravnica, so I am wondering if it shall be necessary to read that book to understand the story, or if WotC shall continue to post the story on their website.

What does everyone else say about this? Will it be necessary to read the new novel, or will WotC tell the story in articles on their website?

I've been wondering the same thing. I hope that they will make the novel necessary while maintaining the personal stories they've been doing recently. It'll be interesting to see how they roll it all out.

Well, they have already made a new novel, centered on Ravnica and written by Wheel of Time writer. I assume the ravnica one will come after the story of war of the spark is wrapped up, so it will be a side story, instead of canon-defining.

Wait Boza, this is the first I’ve heard of a Sanderson novel — do you have a link? Based on how great his Innistrad novella was, this sounds awesome!

My guess is that the majority of the War of Spark story will be told through novels, but a Sanderson novel might be a different animal entirely. Either way I’m excited (and grateful for public libraries so I don’t have to buy it myself!).

The implication at the announcement was that the majority of the story around War of the Spark would be contained in the novel, but this would not be a typical thing going forward. They seem to have chosen this route due to the climactic nature of this set's story in particular; it deserves a more substantial medium than online articles.

Link for Children of the Nameless

This is the Sanderson novel, available for free, haven't read it though. Has 4.1/5 on goodreads, if it counts for something.

I am sorry for misleading, I meant to say Innistrad, instead of Ravnica. The Ravnica one is not written by him.

My guess is they'll probably make it important to read for the story, with strong tie ins and information about the whereabouts of some of the classic characters (the author hopefully will include which plane Fblthp planeswalked to, so that they can finally be found). But my guess is they'll attempt to make it free online or something so that we aren't punished for not buying a 20$ magic novel.

dbpunk, when was it ever stated that Fblthp traveled to another plane?

It wasn't, but we all know that Fblthp needs a planeswalker card with a power level similar to Teferi, Hero of Dominaria
