Will the Next Set Be On Dominaria, As Well?

WotC has said that, officially, there shall be no more blocks, but, if the story requires it, two or more consecutive sets may share the same story, thus making an unofficial "block."

I personally believe that the return to Dominaria is far too epic of a story to be told in a single set, unless that story was horribly rushed, so I shall speculate that the next set shall directly continue the story of this set and form a sort of block with this one.

What does everyone else say about this subject? Will the next set be on Dominaria, as well?

The next set will be the newest core set

Well, it is fair to assume the next set means the set after Core Set. But still, I think it is unlikely, despte Dominaria having a rich enough history for us to stay there for several sets, Wizards would like to move the story along. My guess is the fall set would be The Adventures of Nissa and Chandra who walked away from the current story and then we would get Return to Return to Ravnica and grand culmination of the Bolas storyline in Spring next year.

But guys... what does this mean for standard? How does that function?

Boza: It's heavily implied that Chandra returns to Dominaria (see the recently spoiled Karpulsan Hound). That said, I could see Nissa getting her own block.

Also, as much as I want Dominaria to have at least 2 sets, it's not possible. :/

I too hope we stay on Dominaria for the Fall set. Staying on Dominaria forces Wizards to be more creative which in turn is better for the game. Only a single set on the huge plane of Dominaria is in my opinion a total waste. The return of Karn and the Weatherlight for only one set is more waste. I want more of these stories.

I'm conflicted though because if the Fall sets take place on Dominaria then Wizards is not wrapping up the boring Gatewatch vs Bolas story line instead it will be dragged into next year. I say this because I don't think Dominaria is the plane where the big final battle between the Gatewatch and Bolas will happen because there's no reason for Bolas or Tezzeret to planeswalk to Dominaria. Bolas has set his sights on Ravnica.

Bolas and Tezzeret are in Core 2019, the next set after Dominaria. There's already two images of the Core set. Bolas is one and other is http://wizardsmagic.tumblr.com/image/170911962541 Tezzeret.

These two together in the Core set conveniently segues back to the Gatewatch battle story line after Amonkhet. The Gatewatch are getting what they need in Dominaria, Teferi a very powerful old school Planeswalker to join the team. He is just who Ajani wanting to have before taking on Bolas on Amonkhet. The story can continue now unfortunately leaving Dominaria behind.

After Core set there's only one more Standard set this year, the Fall set. The most logical step is to stay on Dominaria and then return return to Ravnica next year, but I just don't know if this will happen. My gut feels that it won't. Wizards will get greedy returning to Ravnica as soon as possible.

Can Wizards cram an entire return return Ravnica story that includes the guilds as well as a huge Gatewatch battle into one set? Do they dare try this? It's also possible that they break the return return to Ravnica using the Fall set as the first set and then continuing the story in the next set in the new year. Setting up a cliffhanger at the end of the year going into the new year.

If the Fall set stays on Dominaria then great, but I think it will be on Ravnica.

Although the location plane hasn't been revealed where Core 2019 is taking place the reappearance of Tezzeret is a clue that it's not on Dominaria. For what purpose does Tezzeret have to come to Dominaria? The new Tezzeret art work has another clue, the clouds in the background are Esper as seen in Esper Panorama. Tall clouds puffy on one side with a flat straight cut off edge on the other.

The new art could mean two things be a homage to Tezzeret, showing him on his home plane having nothing to do with what plane the actual Core set takes place on. Or Core 2019 is taking place on Alara, Tezzeret's home plane.

Bolas also has ties to Alara. After destroying Amonkhet we don't know where Bolas is. The last time we saw Garruk I think was Core set M15 he was on Alara killing stuff, that's convenient.

I doubt they will stay on Dominaria for the next non-core set for one reason: Why would they do both of the very first consecutive large sets on the same plane immediately after doing away with multi set blocks? The whole point of the change is so they could get away from doing that constantly. They specified they COULD make multiple sets in the same plane, but why would they just start right back into that behavior now that its all changed? They are going to do at least a couple in new places in a row before staying in one place for consecutive sets I bet. Otherwise the move to no multiset blocks is very illogical, especially when you take into consideration the reasons they stated for the change.

My personal wish list for the fall set:

1: new plane

2: not historical fantasy--nothing wrong with the genre, but after Shadows over Innistrad (Victorian central and eastern Europe), Kaladesh (steampunk-y with a South Asian veneer), Amonkhet (Bronze Age Egypt), and Ixalan (Age of Exploration Mesoamerica), I'm losing the feeling of discovery.

3: something for Nissa to do besides offer commentary on a plane's mana health

4: contribute to the Bolas story

5: plant the seeds of a new story

legendofa I'd personally love a return to Alara - it'd be a nice place to weave in the Bolas storyline if they choose to go that route, and we haven't had a multicolor set/block in a while. It'd also be a great opportunity to give the shards watermarks.

I'm also just now realizing this, but maybe Nissa goes there to see how a plane's mana heals after being torn apart.

Pieguy396 If the next set is a returning plane, Alara is my choice. It was the set where I really became invested in the game, and I credit it with my love for multicolored decks. I want to see what Alaran society looks like post-Conflux. And yeah, I'd like to see shard watermarks.

Nissa + + Alara = ? I can see her trying to rebuild a Bant city or clearing zombies out of Naya.

Rzepkanut, I can understand that, but I must reiterate that a return to Dominaria is far too huge and epic a story to be told in a single set, unless that set is terribly rushed and compressed. How will WotC tell that story and have it feel properly epic? Will the set after the set after Dominaria be on that plane, again?

March 31, 2018 1:07 a.m.

I want to see Alara the most, and get a view on the individual realms now that the conflux happened. I felt like the three Alara expansions didn't quite cover their respective worlds enough and bring them to life the way the other ones were. Whereas SoI or KoT had three expansions on just ONE plane... Alara had to split their lore over five different "planes". Something of an expansion could flesh out places like Naya and Grixis. Even an Alara Origins would be great, with a focus on each of the worlds.

Other than that, I'd like to see more Mirrodin. SoM brought me into Magic the most. Is the resistance successful? Is Urabrask a good guy? Where's Koth? Etc...

:)

I feel like Nissa needs some major character development, especially now that she's gotten access to blue mana. I admit to not always being up to date on the story, but what has she done recently?

Apologies to Argy for not tagging you in my response.

Phaetion I did see that. And I love the implications. The burning question now is what happens next?

legendofa: That is a really good question. Here's my thoughts on Nissa atm:

She's probably going to return to Amonkhet at some point to help the plane heal (We know Chandra will return during Dominaria's story arc). The question is when will she return. I don't believe WOTC would write Nissa entirely out of the Watch, so I have two theories on her return:

  1. She returns during Dominaria's arc. It'll mean that Jace and Chandra will also show up, and unite to take down the Cabal.

  2. She returns to the Watch later on. This may give WOTC a fall set so the Ravnica invasion will begin next year.

Point is: Nissa will return to the group before Bolas invades Ravnica.

Phaetion Nissa knows that Amonkhet and Zendikar are both still damaged. I wouldn't be surprised if she does completely break off with the Gatewatch and go solo. She's not against the Gatewatch and would support them if they met somewhere (Ravnica?), but she seems to have other priorities right now.

Incidentally, Garruk's still in isolation, and hasn't showed up in the main story for a while. This may turn into a plot point in the near future

I believe that Nissa will be focusing on repairing Zendikar before she does any more traveling to other planes to help their inhabitants, so she shall not be appearing again until a third Zendikar block, which I predict will focus largely on repairing the damage inflicted by the battle against the eldrazi.
