8 rack help

Hey everyone. Working on tweaking my modern deck Modern 8-Rack to make it a bit more efficient. I know the sideboard needs alot of work, and have ideas for that but mostly they're cards I still have to aquire. Recently I started noticing issues within the mainboard that I'm hoping to resolve. Namely that with 7 lands that require Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth to tap for black I'm frequently screwed for that second black source I need and that my alt win con ( Mutavault ) just doesn't do it, especially as I find myself more and more frequently turtling behind Ensnaring Bridge to survive. I've been hesitating to take mutavault out because otherwise a Chalice of the Void on one literally forces me to concede, but I can't justify keeping it in when I rely so heavily on bridge. In short, it's time to find a new alt win con.
With Davriel coming out soon he was among the first cards I considered, but a 3 mana rack that hits for 2 damage isnt worth it in my opinion. Sure, he comes with a built in discard engine, but if anything I think he's a budget alternative to Liliana of the Veil , not a win con.
At the moment the most promising choice I'm seeing is Liliana's Caress , but it scares me because if I dont drop it turn 2 then it doesn't seem like it'll do enough. Once I get their hand empty, most opponents will just cast whatever they top deck rather than be forced to discard it meaning I'll only get triggers on those rare occasions when my opponent's draw a spell they can't cast. Are there any other win cons that work in 8 rack besides running a creature or 2 to beat face in that I'm missing?
In case it matters, the changes I have planned for the sideboard are -1 Night of Souls' Betrayal -2 Death's Shadow -2 Dismember +2 Hero's Downfall +3 Leyline of the Void
SpiralWolfos,
Thanks; I was confused!

It seems like 8-Rack will be a huge winner if the London Mulligan sticks (since more folks will be mulliganing harder), so I've been considering the deck as well. But I unfortunately don't have any actual advice for your build.
If you haven't already done so though, you might want to drop by r/8rack on Reddit, MTG: Modern 8 Rack on Facebook, and 8rack on Discord.
Cheers!

Liliana's Caress is better on the sideboard. Bring it in against Faithless Looting decks.
Cut all the colorless lands except Mutavault . I see no reason for all the fetches with DRS out of the equation. 8Rack typically doesn't run land base land destruction. It prefers Smallpox . You could also safely cut down to 20 lands.
I'd consider adding 1-2 Collective Brutality and although not every one likes it several Vicious Rumors is good.

Dav's Dirty Dozen (12Rack) is an example of a deck with the new dav, I'd check it out :)

Unorthodox but consider using Spawning Pool , I like it more than Mutavault in some situations even though the 1 power can be crippling. has multiple upsides though: Produces Black mana on its own, you can hide behind it by just block and regenerating in combat if it comes down to that last creature, and it easily can get beneath your own Ensnaring Bridge . coming in tapped really isn't that big of a problem in my opinion when compared with mutavault for land slots. Hope this helps.

Flooremoji I'm not a huge fan of davriel for 8 rack, just because he's a 3 mana rack that only hits for 2, but I'll check the list out and see how it looks.
Snowmen1 interesting idea. I'm still afraid I'll run into the same issues I have with mutavault in that it'll he too small to go over their big creatures and too few to go around their small creatures, but worth considering.

I recently field tested a single copy of Bloodchief Ascension in 8-Rack and it worked remarkably well:
- Creates excellent plays off of opponent's fetching and use of non-basic lands (e.g. shock lands, pain lands, etc.)
- Combos with 8-rack base of The Rack & Shrieking Affliction
- Works well with any creatures (e.g. Mutavault or Pack Rat ) you may have mainboard
I would like to see if 3 or more would be beneficial; I will report in once I find out.

- So 4 Liliana's is a great thing to have which i see you do have. Now you want the most effective one drop and 2 drop spells you can get your hand on.
- 4x Inquisition of Kozilek 4x Raven's Crime (you are trading 1 card for 2 thats why its so good) 4x thoughtseize (best hand disruption in the game!) 4x Collective Brutality I see a lot of these in 8-rack decks, probably because its a versatile card.
- Smallpox is life loss, removal, and card removal!
- Fatal Push is a classic removal spell in black in modern because of fetch lands and cards like Ghost Quarter .
- you have all 4 racks which is good, I am unsure about Ensnaring Bridge he isn't the strongest card in modern (surprisingly), and for sure isnt worth 4 card slots.
- Shrieking Affliction is an amazing card for you, so its good you have 4.
-
Every 8-rack deck i have seen has 4x Mutavault so he is probably important. None of them have had Deathrite Shaman . 2x Hostile Desert could help as well.
-
Now I have seen some decks use Wrench Mind and some decks have used Funeral Charm charm as well, but only 2 or 3 per card.
-
As for your SB (sideboard) 100% of decks have: 1x waste not, 4x surgical extraction, 2x dark confident. I would recommend damping sphere for when you fight storm.

abbatromebone the deck I linked isn't actually my list. It's another deck with the same name made by another user. I'm not quite sure how to get tapped out to differentiate between the 2, ive tried editing the original post a couple times to no avail. Another user linked my list in comment.

abbatromebone It is unsurprising that no lists used Deathrite, i'd assume it's because he's banned :)

abbatromebone Targetted hand disruption is great the first few turns but can be problematic beyond. I actually don't support the idea of a full 8 IoK/Seize set. You're better with more multi-functional-untargetted discard. I also don't think running a full play set of Raven's Crime is worth it either. You essentially only need 1 copy per game. It's room you could use for other stuff, and let's face it, 8Rack is very limited on space.
Sadly the best version of 8Rack to ever exist was when Deathrite Shaman was legal. :/ (IMO of course)

FYI, Ryosuke Adachi made Top 32 (#30 of 2495 players) at MF Yokoyama this weekend, with this spicy list.

GoldenAgeBatman I REALLY like the idea of bloodchief ascension. When bloodchief gets going, combine it with small pox, I gain 5 life instead of losing 1 and my opponent loses 7 instead of just 1. That's fan-freaking-tastic!!! My one concern is that it's still a 1 drop spell meaning I'm even more vulnerable to a Chalice on 1. Any advice for that?

alias42 I have had success combating chalice by way of either Sorcerous Spyglass or Pithing Needle . If you side board multiple copies of either you can name it and any boardwipes they may have. (It's priceless to watch their reaction)
April 22, 2019 2:31 p.m.
GoldenAgeBatman am I missing something? I don't see how either of those actually stops chalice. Chalice of the Void is a triggered ability, those both only stop activated abilities

Whoops; I was thinking of something else. I meant something like Rakdos Charm

This is the list I came up with Post WAR 8 rack made a new deck with a new name to be sure that it actually posts my deck this time. Let me know what you guys think

Did you perhaps link a different 8-rack deck than your own? Because some of the things that you talked about here versus what are currently in that deck aren't adding up. If that is your deck, I would start out by removing the 4 copies of Deathrite Shaman since that is banned in Modern.
