Are Soldiers Viable?

Modern Deck Help forum

I've created a sample decklist here and It does manage to pump out somewhere in the neighborhood of 20+ damage by turn four. I've also managed to race elves decks with this and beaten them so that's a plus if CoCo elves keeps on the rise. But my main question here is if this type of deck is viable at all in modern.

Not really. Card for card, a lot of the tier 1 decks have better cards. Also, it's worth nothing that the control deck of choice in the current meta runs a bunch of 1 mana 5/5s and 4/5s. Those are incredibly hard to push through. The tri twin variants will also be problematic since you don't have reactive spells.

Besides, what's the payoff for playing soldiers? Access to lords? If so, B/W tokens is already a thing and goes wider and does it faster. If it's the efficient white creatures, you can run G/W variants.

Depends on what you think is "viable". If it's "will go blow-for-blow with the established Tier 1 and 2 archetypes", then sadly, no. If it's "fun deck that can do decently well and surprise some of the Tier 1 and 2 archetypes", then yes. I think Soldiers are hovering in that grey zone between the big boys and the completely unproven brews.

The main issue is that mono- more or less forces you into the "win in one big shot" playstyle, because of how bad it tends to be at evasion. You can patch that a bit if you go for Odric, Master Tactician, though of course you need some Ballyrush Banneret if you want to try and cast him consistently.
