I am new to Modern and am building a deck revolving around infinite combos using midnight guard, and am wondering what kinds of cards to but in it to help protect the combos. Should there be more counter spells, life gain, enchantment removal, ceature return (Time Ebb), creature tapping (Frost Breath), etc.?
I'm with ThatJunkMage. In addition, Bant is actually damn expensive to play. A lot of the standard creature base will cost you an arm and a leg. If you want to enter the format, think about two color combinations first. You can extend into other things later on. For instance, you could start putting together a G/W list and slowly expand it to accommodate more expensive pieces.

Midnight Guard + Ornithopter + Retraction Helix can go infinite. You'll need to have some sort of etb effect, but I'm not sure what at the moment.

Yeah, it can. Still, you're talking about a 4-piece combo here. That's not very good.

@TheDevicer Usually infinite combos require 3 or more cards in modern. They were just suggestions.
My advice would be to not even try combos, seeing how they are difficult to pull off. You spend most of your time trying to assemble it while you could be beating the opponent in the process. Sorry, but it's true.

Mizzium Skin, and things that give hexproof are great, though I would advise against midnight guard combos as they are very finicky in the format, as they are very weak to every form of removal in the format.
