Need help in general deck building/getting back into magic

Modern Deck Help forum

Hello! I've been playing Magic for about 2 to 2 1/2 years, and I've been wanting to start playing modern. The problem is, I started magic around the time Avacyn Restored came out, I played standard at my local FNM up until Born of the Gods came out. I stopped for about a year, and now I want to get back in to it. I have no knowledge about any of the newer sets, or sets before Avacyn. So with as little as I know currently, how do you think I should go about making a deck? Should I use some decks from this site, or go about making my own? Also, what sets are currently legal in modern? Also also, any tips for staying up to date on recent sets? I'm really bad at getting some decent new cards when they come out(expensive hobby, this is).

Okay, so there are many things going on here, and I'll try to respond to most of them to the best of my ability.

First, you should know that Modern includes sets from 8th Edition forward.

Second, to find more knowledge on the format, here is a modern format primer created by tappedout users.

As far as choosing a deck goes, there is a great variety of decks listed within the primer, lists for which can be found on MTG Top 8 or MTG Goldfish. I would find this to be the easiest route to start playing the format because brewing requires some knowledge of the archetypes played in Modern. However, let this not deter you from brewing if that is what you want. The major questions are these: what colors do you like playing the most? what deck style do you want to play? how competitive do you want to be?

I was in the same position as you a few months ago. Except the only difference is I had never played magic before.

I delved into modern because it seemed like the most interesting format to me. Standard was hard to keep up with, and playing a turn one or two game in legacy/vintage just wasn't my thing. So I chose the turn 5 format.

There are a LOT of awesome different types of decks you can play. If you like playing tribal, elves, merfolk, and humans are pretty good archetypes to check out. Definitely check out my elves if you wanna try an elf deck :D You can cut the Caverns out to make it a pretty decent and cheap deck!

Competitive Elves!

However, if you're not into that, there are so many different archetypes to play. Too many to pick from honestly.

EldraziCombo decks, like Splinter TwinExtort combo decksCycling decksJunkInfectAffinity (also something of mine to check out, I created a budget version of it)Here's mine: Budget Modern Affinity :) FNM Stomp

You have a lot to pick from. I'm still learning, and improving a ton, but I still think that I could be a help to you a little bit! Send me a PM if you're interested in some information about Modern and I'll see what I can tell you :)
