Need some help refining dragon big red deck

Modern Deck Help forum

I would like some input on how I can improve this deck. I feel like it has some room for some improvement but what. I have a ramp theme to get the dragons out as fast as possible with some burn. But the burn element I think need work. So how would I do that? Here is the deck.

Burning Dragons

This brew doesn’t feel particularly competitive in a modern environment, and I think you’ll need to make some big changes here if you’re wanting to improve this deck.

Moderns most competitive dragon themed deck has always been a build called “Skred Red”, and I think your best shot at making this list stronger would be to have a google of those lists and refine your build to suite that playstyle better. Namely, you’re running waaay too many creatures, and not nearly enough elements of control.

1) I don’t play modern or any other competitive stuff like that, so please be prepared to second-guess everything I say on these subjects. 2) If the burn is more focused on buying you time in the beginning of the game, I’d recommend you consider little creatures like Careless Celebrant or Goblin Arsonist as blockers-with-benefits. Some have limitations on targets (read: creatures only) but it may be one of the answers you’re looking for.

What you’ll want to be heading towards is something like this list here - note that i found this just doing a few seconds of searching, so this is by no means an optimal build, but it’s pretty close

Just adding some more thought in, if you were looking to maximise dragon-ness, then i’d recommend the following changes to the above list:

wallisface I made some major edits to make it more like a skred dragon deck. I took out all the green since I only had a few of them, added some blood moon, molten rain for some mana denial. So what are your thought on how the deck is now?

It’s looking a lot stronger, and you should be able to do a lot better versus opponents noemw.

There are still some card i’d drop:

  • Dragon Tempest , Sarkhan's Triumph and Dragon's Hoard are all pointless cards. With 9 dragons in the deck already, you should have no problem finding one. Also, resolving a dragon is scary enough on its own, these extra effects these cards generate simply aren’t worth it. Your main goal should be stalling out the game long enough to cast a dragon, not worrying so much about what happens when you’re able to do so. Ditch all of these cards!!

To replace those 8 cards, I would suggest 4 more spells to kill off creatures - more copies of Lightning Bolt , Skred and Slagstorm never hurt. And then 4 copies of a cheap card to help you dig through your deck - Relic of Progenitus is particularly good for this as it will deal with opponents relying on their grave (which is often a huge % of most metas).

The only other suggestion would be to drop the Koth of the Hammer to run the full playset of Sarkhan, Fireblood . Sarkhan will help you a lot more in this build than Koth, as he can help you both dig for cards, or cheat out some early dragons.

wallisfaceI added what you suggested could not make room for Relic of Progenitus . Maybe side board Slagstorm depending on my matchup?

Nah the list looks good as you have it now, Slagstorm is defo a mainboard card. I think this list looks easy-strong-enough to win games, so the next step will be to play as many games with it as you can. The deck will require a sideboard very specific to your local meta, and the mainboard may change a around a little too as you see what works and what doesn’t.

This looks like a solid skred deck now, so the best thing to do now will be to get lots of games in :)
