I've been casual and EDH for a long time and never really touched modern; however, I finally decided to pop out of my shell and throw my luck. I've already had some success with this deck, I have been able to beat Scapeshift, Mono-red Goblins, Illusions tribal, and (albeit barely) a budget Dredge deck. Any suggestions and criticisms would be appreciated. My deck

there was a deck similar on channel fireball ages ago called "modern dirty red", might be good as a reference point. i think it focused more on pumping the creatures and either making them unblockable or giving them trample, was actually a lot of fun to play, considering making it grixis for a laugh.

SMASHER101: a lack of trample isn't a concern when the creature already has flying, and Enigma Drake doesn't die to Lightning Bolt

you're trying to do 2 very different things at once. you're creatures are trying to be aggro, but your counterspells are control. your counterspells also don't help your Kiln Fiend at all.

The creatures and spells do not match up - niv magus wants you to have a lot of spells, even if they are copies, while guttersnipe/enigma drake want you to cast spells even outside of combat, while kiln fiend benefits you for casting spells right before or during combat. I would stick to one plan:
-
If you want a good kiln fiend deck, kick the other dudes, add Monastery Swiftspear and Mutagenic Growth and win in one big and fast attack.
-
If you want to be meticulous and controlling, add 4 Young Pyromancer and 4 Thing in the Ice Flip and kick out every non-guttersnipe creature and focus on those.
-
If you want to be an even faster combo deck, add niv magus to a storm deck shell and play some large Ground Rift to eat with elemental and attack for the win.
Doing a middle-of-the-road thing just makes every strategy weaker.

Seems like a decent budged build that you could have some fun games with, i'd say it's tier 2.5-3. The overal strategy just eats it to instant speed removal.
There are better cards than Coordinated Assault, and I would say that Spellheart Chimera might better than Enigma Drake because of trample. Nivix Cyclops should be in there as kiln fiend 5-8.
The manabase definitly needs work, and you don't need fetches and shocks to do that, painlands and fastlands will do just fine for a 2 color deck. Checklands should replace the gainlands and the rest can be basics. Upgrade in that order btw.
Good luck at FNM!
