Snap Pea Mage
Modern Deck Help forum

I recently acquired a good sum of money for my birthday, and want to get some cards for my modern deck. I could use it to work on the land base and get some of the shocks and fetches I need, or I could get the 2 snapcaster mages I want. This is without a doubt the most money I've ever considered spending on a little piece of cardboard, so would it be best to put these off for last and get the other less expensive stuff first while I wait for prices to potentially go down? Or are they not going to go anywhere but up?

This is the deck I'm building.

Wizards is doing Modern Masters like every two years, and since we just had a Modern Masters release, the absolute soonest Snapcaster Mage is going to see a reprint is in two years. He's going to continue rising, probably slowly, until that point. When that happens, the new version will probably go for like 30% less of what the original is at, and the original will probably keep it's value.
As far as buying snapcasters... it's gonna hurt. But no, they aren't going to go down any time soon. But honestly? I'd rather spend money on the snapcasters and trade for anything under like $20. Shocks and fetches aren't inexpensive, but they are damn sure easier to trade for than the snapcasters. And if you can get something in a trade, i'd rather not spend money on it.

This is a good point, but I don't know too many people with fetches because most of them just play kitchen table.

Fetches and shocks are the cheapest they will be for quite awhile. If you're patient, get your lands now and wait for the snappy reprint in a few years. Snappy won't get too much higher (I've heard predictions that it will go up to 100 then settle back to 85 until its next reprint) but because it's a staple in legacy and modern, it will see a reprint. Guaranteed, but it'll be awhile. Either way, you'll be paying that much for a snapcaster whether you get it now or wait, but the fetches and shocks will gradually start going up.
BUT, like other people have said, it is also a LOT easier to trade for a land than a snappy as they are all over the place and pretty cheap relatively. If you can trade for the lands, then do that instead. Just make your way to a LGS tournament every once in awhile and bring your trade binder and you will find people to trade with.

I don't buy too much sealed, so unfortunately my trade binder is quite small. I'll see what can be done though. Thanks to all who have replied so far! Another quick question, I still need a few more cards like Geist and Serum Visions, should I get those before or after the land?

Serum Visions is the FNM promo in August. Wait on that. As for Geist, I have no idea, but it wouldn't be unreasonable for him to see a MM2017 reprint, but I have no idea.

What some people like to do is get all the cheap stuff, because something like Snap is bound to be reprinted eventually. It may take another year, but it'll happen. It would help to know what deck you're running to determine how important they are. Some decks can work well without 4 Snaps.
In my opinion, the optimal buying time for Snapcasters has past, so you either have to wait quite a while, or get them expensive.
