Thundermaw or Stormbreath?
Modern Deck Help forum

I am running a grixis control/midrange deck (deck:http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/building-a-new-crueler-meta-suggestions/) and I wanted to know whether Stormbreath Dragon or Thundermaw Hellkite works better. This deck obviously isn't tier one but I want to make it semi-competitive.

I'd take the Stormbreath, pro-white avoids a lot of control-based removal and enhantment stuff plus he can get buffed to a 7/7.
Maybe sideboard the Thundermaw for against aggro/weenie decks?

yeah thats what I was thinking, he is a good mana sink late game and cant be hit by cards like Path to Exile.

Most people say they support Thundermaw Hellkite because it gets around Lingering Souls.
Well lingering souls tokens are white and Stormbreath Dragon has protection from white so it does a pretty good job too.
It can also block rhinos all day long.
And is harder to remove because dodges Path to Exile.

Stormbreath Dragon is usually better in control decks, but Thundermaw ends the game quicker.
ChiefBell I like to get spirit tokens out of the game completely, which Thundermaw can do, rather than just avoid them.
The monstrous on Stormbreath can sometimes be relevant, and when it is, you've already won. Thundermaw can block a Tasigur, but Stormbreath can't.

Not sure if I can accurately comment on this, seeing as I'm forever biased towards Thundermaw Hellkite as it's won me so many more games than Stormbreath Dragon ever did. (Plus it was my first ever Dragon creature.) It's Lingering Souls/Spectral Procession removal (both solid staples in the format) plus a 5/5 flyer in a format with a lot of 4-power staples is never a bad thing to have on your side.

I run Stormbreath in Blue Moon, just counter anything he can't deal with.

If I ever run anything R/x with dragons in Modern, I'd probably try Stormie for a while just because it basically says "Protection from Path to Exile".

Imagine losing Thundermaw Hellkite to a 1 mana removal spell. Ouch.

U/R dragon control? Wait. That could actually be viable. I might make that decklist.
