What do I need to know about Grixis Twin?

Modern Deck Help forum

Posted on June 8, 2015, 7:19 p.m. by MindAblaze

I've decided to convert my Grixis Delver deck into a Grixis Twin deck. So, out came the young pyros and the Delvers and I've opted to go with a disruption/control early game until the combo is ready to go.

Am I going in the wrong direction? Does it seem like there's a decent shell? Should I make space for a couple main board Blood Moon?

What does your meta look like right now? That will be a decent place to start looking at your choices.

Off the bat, I really don't like the Spreading Seas as they really don't do much for you. I mean, it's cute, but in the long term it doesn't actually do much unless you're on the island walk or 4 maindeck blood moon plan. Any other cantrip should be a better fit: Telling Time, Anticipate, Serum Visions.

Also, you could do with WAY more permission (read as any permission). Mana Leak, Remand, Stubborn Denial, anything to keep your opponent off their game. I know you have the discard, but you will want to find room for permission as well, probably cutting the discard in half.

LAstly, general utility spells such as Kolaghan's Command, Izzet Charm, and Cryptic Command are awesome here. Definitely find room for some of these.

Here's my list for reference and / or inspiration:

I'm running the four Boomerang in hopes of bouncing their land turn two, but I may be able to make room for Remand/Mana Leak. It makes sense if you're holding up mana for an eot Exarch, but counter magic's not really my bag. It can be but it usually isn't.

I used to run mainboard blood moon in a Twin deck. It was fun but the problem is that sometimes it absolutely wrecks an opponent and other times it is pretty useless. I ended up stopping using it entirely between the time I switched from Paper to MTGO, and now the price has skyrocketed so highly I doubt I'll jump back in and play that way anyway.

Considering you're running 3 colors yourself I don't think it's a good move, but ulimately it will be determined by your "Style" of play

I'll take that into consideration. I kind of want to play resource denial, but I'm torn. Blood Moon+Spreading Seas+Boomeranging their lands and hand disruption seems like it should work. Theoretically.

I'll take a look at your deck ThatJunkMage. Some insight may be good. I think testing is going to be most important.

Since you like disrupting mana bases and rendering lands useless might I suggest Shadow of Doubt? This little beauty has won me matches against burn, Siege Rhino based Abzan, and control mirror against when I was playing Esper a few weeks back.

It's always a good feeling to keep somebody from getting the second land to play Tarmogoyf on T2 and then making them try again T3. Essentially this means you don't have to worry about Liliana of the Veil until T4 when you have a lovely Cryptic Command waiting. > : )

See with the twin deck you always want to keep your opponent guessing, playing most of your game on their turn. That makes counter magic amazing. Because you can get away with landing your combo EoT, you can jam an exarch turn three and just keep mana up, making your opponent think you have it. It's all about the guessing game with this deck, which makes sorcery speed things pretty bad, and counter magic the best option. The boomerangs are fine, but I would advise swapping them out for some less mana intensive removal like Shadow of Doubt or Vapor Snag.

Electrolyze is also pretty sweet...

Mainboarding a Blood Moon cuts off your mana pretty bad, meaning it's hard to get a lategame Tasigur and Angler. I'd keep it in the sideboard.

I think the main board Blood Moon plan is out. It seems to be too disruptive for this deck. I don't mind a reactive Grixis with a couple Remand, some Mana Leaks and a couple Spell Pierce to protect my stuff from non Abrupt Decay removal. A couple Terminates and Bolts to round it out, then hand disruption and Surgical Extractions to keep them off their interaction with me. Maybe I'll keep the mana disruption in the sideboard for the Abzan menace.

What about a couple Spellskite in the main? I'm thinking 2.

Spellskite probably doesn't need to be a 2 of main, I prefer a 1/1 split. It's really a meta call though. If you are playing infect every round, go for the 2 main.

Has anyone looked at a RW or Mardu variant? You have fewer copies of your Twiddle creatures and have less manipulation. The game wouldn't be tempo, but more aggro or control depending on how you want to play it.
