rakdos return or Cruel Ultimatum? Rakdos can straight up leave your opponents with no hand while cruel ultimatum leaves your opponents with a lot less resources and you with a lot more resources. Yeah cruel ultimatum gets you a lot of cards but...wouldn’t you rather leave your opponents unable to play cards?

Rakdos just causes your opponent to discard and lose life...Cruel does both of those things but keeps going! It gets your Snapcaster Mage back as well as give you life and take away from their board state and you draw cards... You win via card advantage.

Going to vote neither. Both have high potential to be dead cards in a lot of games. I would suggest 1x Cut the Ribbons instead.

Definitely neither. There are much more efficient ways to win the game.

If it's turn 4 when you can cast Rakdos's Return for x=2, your opponent probably already doesn't have a hand. This is modern, after all. They either don't have a hand because their board is 4-5 Humans, they've already used Inquisition of Kozilek to make you discard Rakdos's Return (if they'd take that card at all), or they're holding up Logic Knot and are ready to slam Teferi on the next turn.

Any opponent that lets you live to turn 7 and then resolve a Cruel Ultimatum is an 8-year-old at their first fnm and their deck is probably almost legal in standard. Are you really going to cast Cruel Ultimatum on that kid? Naturally, he drew his Terra Stomper the turn before, which is is favorite creature and the only reason his deck isn't legal in standard. He would be over in the standard FNM if it weren't for his beloved bomb. He might start crying when you kill it.

Sorry, the last week has been stressful. I mean no disrespect.

Anyway, what style of grixis control are you trying to build? Sorcery-speed with discard and Damnation and creatures like Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet? Or tempo draw-go with Tasigur and Cryptic Command? Or something else entirely?

Compare rakdos return to Blightning. If your trying to win with some big spell maybe try Torment of Hailfire
