135 Modern Archetypes and Counting!
Modern forum
Posted on May 19, 2015, 11:34 p.m. by MSU_Iced_Z
I've been working on this for a while, and I've gotten far enough on my own that I want to share it with this community. Hopefully you'll find it a helpful resource, and I also want help improving it.
What this thread is:
-A list of archetypes for modern players looking for something to explore
-A place to share new (to the format or just new to this list) archetypes. Please include a link to the deck. Ideally the link should include a primer or something with the deck's results, just for everyone's benefit.
What this thread is not:
-Any attribution of credit for these decks. I found one source, but I'm not asserting that source did or did not originate the deck.
-A source for the most metagamed decklists. If you want that, read the work of someone more qualified than me. These should be seen as starting points only.
-T1 Exclusive. All these decks should be either at least fringe-competitive or thought-provoking, but your mileage may vary.
Thanks for reading!

never mind. I'm an idiot. I thought you said all decks ever. Ignore me forever.

Hey thanks for putting this together! I think its a great idea as it can be hard sometimes to find a new deck. Would you consider adding a 1 or 2 sentence brief explanation of how the deck works?
Like "Twin a combo deck built around Splinter Twin and effects such as Pestermite's ability. Tier 1"

wwhitegoldd lol You're good. It has a lot of older lists on it, so it's not exactly like it looks like a current Top 8 meta or something. But yeah, the goal is to be a resource for someone looking to think about current modern.
GlistenerAgent Jeskai Geist added. Do you have a good BUG infect list? I'm not coming up with a good link for some reason.
wnorris17 It's definitely a good idea, but also a lot of work. I may get there when I have more free time. lol That's why I tried to include the links to where I found them on the deck page.
Defpotec Very interesting. Definitely different from the RW prison list I have on there atm, so I'll be sure to add it. That page has several decklists, got a favorite for me to copy?

Added it. I added Orry's version to the existing RW prison one as a link because they're very similar (SSG vs more planeswalkers, basically), and I added one of the Stax-ier ones from the forum as a separate archetype. Very interesting decks, thanks.

Sorry if I sound rude, I don't mean to be.
Some of those decks aren't official 'archetypes' like in the case of 'Esper Aggro'. Something is not an archetype when 1 or 2 people play it. It has to be recognised. Also could you add in cruel-less grixis control please?
Again sorry if I sounded rude, I wasn't meaning to.

Might want to take a look at those deck lists. Some are very wrong.

Ari Lax's list from PT RTR is reasonable for BUG Infect.

The Abzan one is pretty bad. The Golgari rock one is outdated. The Jund one is outdated.

You are missing Heartless Summoning combo. Check out Heartless Myrs of the Brood or Myr Cruelty (TURN 2 WIN) for the more consistent versions of the deck.
Also you don't have a normal Aristocrats deck, only the Collected Company versions. Might be something to look into.
Finally, you should probably cut out the Persist Combo deck. It's entirely overshadowed by the new Collected Company version, and is actually cheaper to build.

awesomeguy37 Not rude at all, it's a legit point. When I say archetype I don't mean "You should expect to play against this at your next event," I want it to be something people can look at and go "Oh, that's interesting. Maybe I'll try that out." The big archetypes are easy to find, I was more looking to give people a glimpse of the available depth, without just not listing the T1, which would be odd. Added Grixis Control.
ChiefBell Updated the name of Abzan. I just put it there for a general grindy GB base, but being clearer is better, so thanks. And the decklists are almost certainly out of date, as I said. I would never be able to keep up with the meta. The goal is just to look at this list and be able to go "Gee, that looks interesting. I wonder how that's evolved" and then you can investigate with pros or whoever. Heck, a lot of these decks don't have Khans fetches in their mana base because of when they were written.
GlistenerAgent Added. Thanks.
lemmingllama Added both. Thanks. I'm going to leave it, again just for the reference/thought-provoking aspect. But yeah, please no one take this list as me saying "all these decks are equal for your next modern tournament" lol.

MSU_Iced_Z Ok, I was a bit misguided when you said archetype though, thanks for straightening that out!

You're missing some stuff.
Tarmo-Twin is a thing. Jeskai Twin is/was a thing. I suggest Dickmann and Rivera's decklists from PT BNG a bit over a year ago, though you can find more recent versions if you can find them.
4C Gifts is a thing. Sloves has a list, but I'm not sure you'd find it in online resources.
There are others, but I can't remember them.
