are there any modern decks (casual or competitive) that have broken Abyssal Persecutor ? I feel like there is potential there but I can't think of any cards to counter the card's drawback aside from using one of your own removal spells on him.

that's what I was thinking but I can't help but cringed when I think about relying on one of my own removal spells lol maybe like an Orzhov/RBW type build with a ton of removal

You can also sac him to any number of outlets, including something like Cartel Aristocrat . Get your opponent down to 2, then sac him and give the aristocrat protection from whatever color their creatures are and swing for game.

Viscera Seer remains the best sac outlet in Modern and arguably any format. It makes Abyssal Persecutor actually beneficial to you.

Viscera Seer is not even close to the best sac outlet in Modern...
April 29, 2014 11:26 p.m.
kmcree Pretty sure what was meant here was an easily accessible outlet. Just sac for the sake of sac.
April 29, 2014 11:29 p.m.
So uh, pretty sure Cartel Aristocrat is better. So are dozens of other sac outlets.

But more decks use Viscera Seer (mainly Birthing Pod with Melira). Sure face value Cartel Aristocrat is a better card, but the seer can smooth out draws which I would think it is better for what people use sac outlets for in modern.

kmcree Viscera Seer sees play in melira pod. It's cheaper and less mana intensive. As a combo piece Viscera Seer IS better but as an aggro piece not so much.

I'm going to have to agree with kmcree for this circumstance. In this instance we're essentially talking about the final turn of the game. It makes sense to have a play where you can sac a creature to win the game, and smoothing out the draws won't really matter.

kmcree - Define "better." Of the two Viscera Seer see's more play and they're both in the proper colors for the pod decks that would play them. Viscera Seer is also faster and has a more relevant ability, the only thing Cartel Aristocrat has going for it is a bigger body and potential for protection/evasion.
I'm also curious to see these dozens of other better sac outlets.

I haven't seen very many decks that run Viscera Seer . A sac outlet that only lets you scry isn't particularly useful, especially in an aggro deck, which is what the OP is talking about. Even in a more midrange deck, something like Disciple of Griselbrand is, in my opinion, significantly more useful. There also plenty of sac outlets that deal damage to a creature or player. Something like Barrage of Expendables would be especially useful in this situation to deal that extra bit of damage to finish the game.

You could run it in a red/black deck with Dying Wish . Then use Fling , Rite of Consumption , Soul's Fire and Essence Harvest on him, ect . Not the most impressive setup but can do 18 damage in one swing on turn 5.

I'm going to switch it up and recomend smallpox for what you're doing. even the aggro pox shell will be perfect

Here's an Abyssal Persecutor deck I played in Standard a couple years ago, and I'm thinking of rebuilding it for Modern. If I did I would probably keep all the copies of Gatekeeper of Malakir , increase the number of Fling and Sarkhan the Mad , and add Smallpox .

Still, neither Disciple of Griselbrand or Barrage of Expendables see play in modern. Disciple comes in a turn late and costs mana to activate and Barrage costs more mana too. And the scry is very beneficial, even in an aggro layout (but if you are using a sac-outlet in modern in a aggro, you've lost already). Look up Pod Decks. Most have at least one copy of Viscera Seer . http://www.mtgdecks.net/decks/viewByArchetype/1389

Abyssal Persecutor plays nice with....
Smallpox Liliana of the Veil (the best non-Birthing Pod sac option in modern) Sword of Fire and Ice Tribute to Hunger Lich's Mirror Platinum Angel

I feel like the removal spell route on him is the best way. I feel like he could be good in a Rock build and dropping him on like turn three with ramp and then getting in the damage quick and when they're at 0 just kill him.
