Additional fetches in decks

So I'm getting into modern and I often see things like Arid mesa in BW tokens. Is this just completely used to fetch plains/goddless shrine? If this is the case, then using windswept heath would do the same thing right? I am working on getting some marsh flats, but I have a full set of heath, they both will fetch my shock, but marsh flats could fetch a plain swamp as a bonus.
If you can play that any fetch lands does murderous cut ever start to compare with path to exile?
Assuming that you're already running 4 Marsh Flats, and you don't have any third color splashed in the deck, you can run any other white fetch you want, it doesn't have to be Arid Mesa. Windswept Heath or Flooded Strand will both work just as well.
As far as Murderous Cut, its really not the same. Path to Exile is significantly better, especially with cards like Lingering Souls that you can't afford to exile to delve, because you want to flash them back.

Off-color fetchlands are played only because there are not enough on-color fetchlands to fit the deck's fixing needs. Arid Mesa would be played just to fetch Plains and Godless Shrine, but Windswept Heath and Flooded Strand accomplish the same purpose. I'd make sure I have four Marsh Flats first, however.
Murderous Cut should be in your deck only after four Path to Exile.

More fetches add to a decks consistency. Default thinking is often that 4x Shock 4x Check 4x Filter/Scry/Pain/Whatever of a color is the best mana base u can have, however I rather have 8 fetches & a few shocks. This offers better options (IE if u need to play around Blood Moon) at almost any given time.

The Arid Mesa was probably from before the Onslaught fetches were legal in modern but the deck needed more fetches. You could easily play and Wx fetch in their place although windswept heath is cheaper.
Nope. Just nope. Not in this style of deck. If you want more removal you could play both but path is an enormous amount better.
