affordable fetch land help

Modern forum

I am working on a red/blue modern deck and have gotten everything except my lands covered. I can't afford lands like Scalding Tarn so I'm looking for some ideas for a more affordable option . I have a few Cascade Bluffs BTW.

Try pain lands (e.g. Shivan Reef ), check lands (e.g. Sulfur Falls ), and filter lands.

They don't serve the same purpose as Scalding Tarn , and you won't find any playable cards that do, but they're not bad.

Fetches hurt, too. If you want a strong mana base, you're going to end up paying for it somehow.

Yeah i know. There is stuff like Expedition Map but it's not fast enough for tournament play.

brokentoken Expedition Map may not be playable in your deck but it IS tournament playable in Tron.

I can hear people saying, "You can't search for shocklands using Evolving Wilds !"

And I reply, "If it thins out your deck and gives you a better chance for picking up spells, why not?"

Evolving Wilds is okay if you have the luxury of sacking it on your opponent's turn, but it doesn't fully fill the gap left by not having a fetch in modern. Frankly, it won't provide you with a color you need on your turn when you first draw it, giving you a distinct disadvantage against other decks. Overall, you're better off going with shocks, pains and filters... in that order. Because you need the color you need when you need it, not next turn.

@TheOne4221: Deck thinning is the least important purpose of fetches. Evolving Wilds is not competitive. It's too slow and it only finds basics. The deck thinning is not sufficient justification for those deficits.

Yes, yes. To Epochalyptik you listen. Fetches are for mana fixing!
