Which card is better in the current modern meta? Goyf may have a lower mana cost, but you can't compete with stag's power/toughness. I'm also going to need to call in a friend of mine, noahband. This guy is not only an experienced modern player, he is an expert with stag and has been playing with the card since he began playing magic.
Big difference: Goyf, best case scenario, is a 6/7, and that's only if everything goes perfect. Axebane Guardian is a guaranteed 6/7 and doesn't die to Rest in Peace. I would definitely run Guardian over Goyf in any modern build.

This has to be a joke, axe and stags mana cost is WAYYYYY to high for a vanilla 6/7

Well, for one, when you cast it you'll definitely have the upper hand in the mental battle. That's the real meta these days, it's all about the psychological warfare.

What if you don't draw Tarmogoyf until turn 7? Now who's laughing, Spikes?!?!
February 21, 2015 11:17 p.m.
Well they both don't have evasion. Tough choice. I'll go with Suntail Hawk.

I'm pretty sure that Axebane Stag is meant to be Great Sable Stag, a card commonly used as a goyf replacement / utility creature....
Or perhaps this is just legitimately someone who has no idea what they're talking about.

Goyf can become an 8/9 in very specific circumstances. Therefore Goyf is better.

Also, if you run Axebane Guardian, you will probably die before you have a chance o cast it. There is a reason why Tarmogoyf is waayy more pricy than Axebane Guardian.

It only took us fifteen posts to get to storm crow. We're making progress people. Let's try for seventeen next time.

Goyf costs 100 quid, axebane stag 2 pence (inc shipping). And it's bigger and has a cooler name. Stag is a winner hands down.
February 22, 2015 4:29 a.m.
BTW Seacoast Drake is strictly better than Storm Crow --> mind BLOWN
February 22, 2015 4:49 a.m.
Schuesseled is clearly correct. And to everyone saying this is a troll post, I have no idea what you're talking about. A 7 mana 6/7 is clearly superior to a 2 mana usually 4/5. I will prove this now. 2<7, so goyf wins the mana cost battle. However, 6>4 AND 7>5 so the stag is superior in power AND toughness. Final score, Axebane Stag 2, Tarmogoyf 1. No contest.

However, Storm Crow is better then them both. Evasion, and pitches to FoW.

Well, due to some academic research at harvard on this very topic I can conclude that the stag has beaten goyf in every which way.

After reading through all the posts, I think we can conclude that Storm Crow was the real winner. Thank you everyone for participating and don't forget to splash blue in your Abzan decks!
